A refinement of Wilf-equivalence for patterns of length 4
Published • View PublicationBIB
In their paper \cite{DokosDwyer:Permutat12}, Dokos et al. conjecture that the major index statistic is equidistributed among 1423-avoiding, 2413-avoiding, and 2314-avoiding permutations. In this paper we confirm this conjecture by constructing two major index preserving bijections, $Θ:S_n(1423)\to S_n(2413)$ and $Ω:S_n(2314)\to S_n(2413)$. In fact, we show that $Θ$ (respectively, $Ω$) preserves numerous other statistics including the descent set, right-to-left maximum (respectively, left-to-right minimum), and a new statistic we call top-steps (respectively, bottom-steps).
Inversion polynomials for 321-avoiding permutations: addendum
This addendum contains results about the inversion number and major index polynomials for permutations avoiding 321 which did not fit well into the original paper. In particular, we consider symmetry, unimodality, behavior modulo 2, and signed enumeration.

Total occurrence statistics on restricted permutations
We study the total number of occurrences of several vincular (also called generalized) patterns and other statistics, such as the major index and the Denert statistic, on permutations avoiding a pattern of length 3, extending results of Bona (2010, 2012) and Homberger (2012). In particular, for 2-3-1-avoiding permutations, we find the total number of occurrences of any vincular pattern of length 3. In some cases the answer is given by simple expressions involving binomial coefficients. The tools we use are bijections with Dyck paths, generating functions, and block decompositions of permutations.

The inversion number and the major index are asymptotically jointly normally distributed on words
Published in Combinator. Probab. Comp. 25 (2016) 470-483 • View PublicationBIB
In a recent paper, Baxter and Zeilberger show that the two most important Mahonian statistics, the inversion number and the major index, are asymptotically independently normally distributed on permutations. In another recent paper, Canfield, Janson and Zeilberger prove the result, already known to statisticians, that the Mahonian distribution is asymptotically normal on words. This leaves one question unanswered: What, asymptotically, is the joint distribution of the inversion number and the major index on words? We answer this question by establishing convergence to a bivariate normal distribution.

Generating permutations with a given major index
Published • View PublicationBIB
In [S. Effler, F. Ruskey, A CAT algorithm for listing permutations with a given number of inversions, {\it I.P.L.}, 86/2 (2003)] the authors give an algorithm, which appears to be CAT, for generating permutations with a given major index. In the present paper we give a new algorithm for generating a Gray code for subexcedant sequences. We show that this algorithm is CAT and derive it into a CAT generating algorithm for permutations with a given major index.

Permutation statistics of products of random permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a permutation statistic $s : S_n \to \mathbb{R}$, define the mean statistic $\bar{s}$ as the statistic which computes the mean of $s$ over conjugacy classes. We describe a way to calculate the expected value of $s$ on a product of $t$ independently chosen elements from the uniform distribution on a union of conjugacy classes $Γ\subseteq S_n$. In order to apply the formula, one needs to express the class function $\bar{s}$ as a linear combination of irreducible $S_n$-characters. We provide such expressions for several commonly studied permutation statistics, including the excedance number, inversion number, descent number, major index and $k$-cycle number. In particular, this leads to formulae for the expected values of said statistics.

0-Hecke algebra actions on coinvariants and flags
Published • View PublicationBIB
The 0-Hecke algebra $H_n(0)$ is a deformation of the group algebra of the symmetric group $\SS_n$. We show that its coinvariant algebra naturally carries the regular representation of $H_n(0)$, giving an analogue of the well-known result for $\SS_n$ by Chevalley-Shephard-Todd. By investigating the action of $H_n(0)$ on coinvariants and flag varieties, we interpret the generating functions counting the permutations with fixed inverse descent set by their inversion number and major index. We also study the action of $H_n(0)$ on the cohomology rings of the Springer fibers, and similarly interpret the (noncommutative) Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions indexed by hook shapes.

Wilf Equivalence for the Charge Statistic
Savage and Sagan have recently defined a notion of st-Wilf equivalence for any permutation statistic st and any two sets of permutations $Π$ and $Π'$. In this paper we give a thorough investigation of st-Wilf equivalence for the charge statistic on permutations and use a bijection between the charge statistic and the major index to prove a conjecture of Dokos, Dwyer, Johnson, Sagan and Selsor regarding powers of 2 and the major index.

Alcoved Polytopes II
Published • View PublicationBIB
This is the second of two papers where we study polytopes arising from affine Coxeter arrangements. Our results include a formula for their volumes, and also compatible definitions of hypersimplices, descent numbers and major index for all Weyl groups. We give a q-analogue of Weyl's formula for the order of the Weyl group. For A_n, C_n and D_4, we give a Grobner basis which induces the triangulation of alcoved polytopes.
Inversion polynomials for 321-avoiding permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove a generalization of a conjecture of Dokos, Dwyer, Johnson, Sagan, and Selsor giving a recursion for the inversion polynomial of 321-avoiding permutations. We also answer a question they posed about finding a recursive formulas for the major index polynomial of 321-avoiding permutations. Other properties of these polynomials are investigated as well. Our tools include Dyck and 2-Motzkin paths, polyominoes, and continued fractions.

A multivariate "inv" hook formula for forests
Published • View PublicationBIB
Bjoerner and Wachs provided two q-generalizations of Knuth's hook formula counting linear extensions of forests: one involving the major index statistic, and one involving the inversion number statistic. We prove a multivariate generalization of their inversion number result, motivated by specializations related to the modular invariant theory of finite general linear groups.

Diagonalization of the Matrices of the Multinomial Descent and Multinomial Inversion Statistics on the Symmetric Group
In the work of Varchenko, Zagier, Thibon, and Reiner, Saliola, Welker, linear algebraic properties of the multiplication map on the group algebra of the group algebra element are studied, which is the sum over all permutations weighted by q^{inv}, q^{maj}, inv. Here q is a variable, and inv and maj are the classical statistics inversion and major index. We define a multinomial descent statistic des_X and a multinomial inversion statistic inv_X. These new defined statistics are the multinomial expressions of the classical statistics descent des and inversion. We determine the spectrum and the multiplicity of each element of the spectrum of the analogously defined multiplication map on the group algebra for both des_X and inv_X. As corollaries we deduce the spectrum and the multiplicity of each element of the spectrum of the defined multiplication map on the group algebra for the statistics des, maj and inv.

Signed mahonians on some trees and parabolic quotients
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the distribution of the major index with sign on some parabolic quotients of the symmetric group, extending and generalizing simultaneously results Gessel-Simion and Adin-Gessel-Roichman, and on some special trees that we call rakes. We further consider and compute the distribution of the flag-major index on some parabolic quotients of wreath products and other related groups. All these distributions turn out to have very simple factorization formulas.

Mesh patterns and the expansion of permutation statistics as sums of permutation patterns
Published • View PublicationBIB
Any permutation statistic $f:\sym\to\CC$ may be represented uniquely as a, possibly infinite, linear combination of (classical) permutation patterns: $f= Σ_τλ_f(τ)τ$. To provide explicit expansions for certain statistics, we introduce a new type of permutation patterns that we call mesh patterns. Intuitively, an occurrence of the mesh pattern $p=(π,R)$ is an occurrence of the permutation pattern $π$ with additional restrictions specified by $R$ on the relative position of the entries of the occurrence. We show that, for any mesh pattern $p=(π,R)$, we have $λ_p(τ) = (-1)^{|τ|-|π|}p^{\star}(τ)$ where $p^{\star}=(π,R^c)$ is the mesh pattern with the same underlying permutation as $p$ but with complementary restrictions. We use this result to expand some well known permutation statistics, such as the number of left-to-right maxima, descents, excedances, fixed points, strong fixed points, and the major index. We also show that alternating permutations, André permutations of the first kind and simsun permutations occur naturally as permutations avoiding certain mesh patterns. Finally, we provide new natural Mahonian statistics.

Mahonian Pairs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce the notion of a Mahonian pair. Consider the set, P^*, of all words having the positive integers as alphabet. Given finite subsets S,T of P^*, we say that (S,T) is a Mahonian pair if the distribution of the major index, maj, over S is the same as the distribution of the inversion number, inv, over T. So the well-known fact that maj and inv are equidistributed over the symmetric group, S_n, can be expressed by saying that (S_n,S_n) is a Mahonian pair. We investigate various Mahonian pairs (S,T) with S different from T. Our principal tool is Foata's fundamental bijection f: P^* -> P^* since it has the property that maj w = inv f(w) for any word w. We consider various families of words associated with Catalan and Fibonacci numbers. We show that, when restricted to words in {1,2}^*, f transforms familiar statistics on words into natural statistics on integer partitions such as the size of the Durfee square. The Rogers-Ramanujan identities, the Catalan triangle, and various q-analogues also make an appearance. We generalize the definition of Mahonian pairs to infinite sets and use this as a tool to connect a partition bijection of Corteel-Savage-Venkatraman with the Greene-Kleitman decomposition of a Boolean algebra into symmetric chains. We close with comments about future work and open problems.

Enumerating Projective Reflection Groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
Projective re ection groups have been recently dened by the second author. They include a special class of groups denoted G(r; p; s; n) which contains all classical Weyl groups and more generally all the complex re ection groups of type G(r; p; n). In this paper we dene some statistics analogous to descent number and major index over the projective re ection groups G(r; p; s; n), and we compute several generating functions concerning these parameters. Some aspects of the representation theory of G(r; p; s; n), as distribution of one-dimensional characters and computation of Hilbert series of invariant algebras, are also treated.

q-Hook Length Formulas for Signed Labeled Forests
Published • View PublicationBIB
A signed labeled forest is defined as a (plane) forest labeled by {1,2,..., n} along with minus signs associated to some vertices. Signed labeled forests can be viewed as an extension of signed permutations. We define the inversion number, the flag major index and the R-major index on signed labeled forests. They can be considered as type B analogues of the indices for labeled forests introduced by Bjorner and Wachs. The flag major index for signed labeled forests is based on the flag major index on signed permutations introduced by Adin and Roichman, whereas the R-major index for signed labeled forests is based on the R-major index that we introduce for signed permutations, which is closely related to the major defined by Reiner. We obtain q-hook length formulas by q-counting signed labelings of a given forest with respect to the above indices, from which we see that these three indices are equidistributed for signed labeled forests. Our formulas for the major indices and the inversion number are type B analogues of the formula due to Bjorner and Wachs. We also give a type D analogue with respect to the inversion number of even-signed labeled forests.

The Number of Inversions and the Major Index of Permutations are Asymptotically Joint-Independently Normal
We use recurrences (alias difference equations) to prove the longstanding conjecture that the two most important permutation statistics, namely the number of inversions and the major index, are asymptotically joint-independently-normal. We even derive more-precise-than needed asymptotic formulas for the (normalized) mixed moments. This is the fully revised second edition, incorportating the many insightful comments of nine conscientious NON-anonymous referees listed under the authors' names. This article is exclusively published in the on-line journal "Personal Journal of Shalosh B. Ekhad and Doron Zeilberger" and this arxiv.

On some analogues of Carlitz's identity for the hyperoctahedral group
We give a new description of the flag major index, introduced by Adin and Roichman, by using a major index defined by Reiner. This allows us to establish a connection between an identity of Reiner and some more recent results due to Chow and Gessel. Furthermore we generalize the main identity of Chow and Gessel by computing the four-variate generating series of descents, major index, length, and number of negative entries over Coxeter groups of type $B$ and $D$.

Enumerating Wreath Products Via Garsia-Gessel Bijections
Published • View PublicationBIB
We generalize two bijections due to Garsia and Gessel to compute the generating functions of the two vector statistics $(\des_G, \maj,\ell_G, \col)$ and $(\des_G, \ides_G, \maj, \imaj, \col, \icol)$ over the wreath product of a symmetric group by a cyclic group. Here $\des_G$, $\ell_G$, $\maj$, $\col$, $\ides_G$, $\imaj_G$, and $\icol$ denote the number of descents, length, major index, color weight, inverse descents, inverse major index, and inverse color weight, respectively. Our main formulas generalize and unify several known identities due to Brenti, Carlitz, Chow-Gessel, Garsia-Gessel, and Reiner on various distributions of statistics over Coxeter groups of type $A$ and $B$.
