The Sperner property for $132$-avoiding intervals in the weak order
Published in Bulletin of the London Mathematical Society, Volume 53 (2021) • View PublicationBIB
A well-known result of Stanley from 1980 implies that the weak order on a maximal parabolic quotient of the symmetric group $S_n$ has the Sperner property; this same property was recently established for the weak order on all of $S_n$ by Gaetz and Gao, resolving a long-open problem. In this paper we interpolate between these results by showing that the weak order on any parabolic quotient of $S_n$ (and more generally on any $132$-avoiding interval) has the Sperner property. This result is proven by exhibiting an action of $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ respecting the weak order on these intervals. As a corollary we obtain a new formula for principal specializations of Schubert polynomials. Our formula can be seen as a strong Bruhat order analogue of Macdonald's reduced word formula. This proof technique and formula generalize work of Hamaker, Pechenik, Speyer, and Weigandt and Gaetz and Gao.

The permutahedral variety, mixed Eulerian numbers, and principal specializations of Schubert polynomials
Published in International Mathematics Research Notices, Volume 2023, Issue 5, March 2023, Pages 3615--3670 • View PublicationBIB
We compute the expansion of the cohomology class of the permutahedral variety in the basis of Schubert classes. The resulting structure constants $a_w$ are expressed as a sum of \emph{normalized} mixed Eulerian numbers indexed naturally by reduced words of $w$. The description implies that the $a_w$ are positive for all permutations $w\in S_n$ of length $n-1$, thereby answering a question of Harada, Horiguchi, Masuda and Park. We use the same expression to establish the invariance of $a_w$ under taking inverses and conjugation by the longest word, and subsequently establish an intriguing cyclic sum rule for the numbers. We then move toward a deeper combinatorial understanding for the $a_w$ by exploiting in addition the relation to Postnikov's divided symmetrization. Finally, we are able to give a combinatorial interpretation for $a_w$ when $w$ is vexillary, in terms of certain tableau descents. It is based in part on a relation between the numbers $a_w$ and principal specializations of Schubert polynomials. Along the way, we prove results and raise questions of independent interest about the combinatorics of permutations, Schubert polynomials and related objects. We also sketch how to extend our approach to other Lie types, highlighting in particular an identity of Klyachko.

Principal specializations of Schubert polynomials in classical types
Published in Algebraic Combinatorics, Volume 4 (2021) no. 2, pp. 273-287 • View PublicationBIB
There is a remarkable formula for the principal specialization of a type A Schubert polynomial as a weighted sum over reduced words. Taking appropriate limits transforms this to an identity for the backstable Schubert polynomials recently introduced by Lam, Lee, and Shimozono. This note identifies some analogues of the latter formula for principal specializations of Schubert polynomials in classical types B, C, and D. We also describe some more general identities for Grothendieck polynomials. As a related application, we derive a simple proof of a pipe dream formula for involution Grothendieck polynomials.

Principal specializations of Schubert polynomials and pattern containment
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that the principal specialization of the Schubert polynomial at $w$ is bounded below by $1+p_{132}(w)+p_{1432}(w)$ where $p_u(w)$ is the number of occurrences of the pattern $u$ in $w$, strengthening a previous result by A. Weigandt. We then make a conjecture relating the principal specialization of Schubert polynomials to pattern containment. Finally, we characterize permutations $w$ whose RC-graphs are connected by simple ladder moves via pattern avoidance.
Weighted $\mathsf{P}-$partitions enumerator

To an extended permutohedron we associate the weighted integer points enumerator, whose principal specialization is the $f$-polynomial. In the case of poset cones it refines Gessel's $\mathsf{P}$-partitions enumerator. We show that this enumerator is a quasisymmetric function obtained by universal morphism from the Hopf algebra of posets.

Families of major index distributions: closed forms and unimodality
Published • View PublicationBIB
Closed forms for $f_{λ,i} (q) := \sum_{τ\in SYT(λ) : des(τ) = i} q^{maj(τ)}$, the distribution of the major index over standard Young tableaux of given shapes and specified number of descents, are established for a large collection of $λ$ and $i$. Of particular interest is the family that gives a positive answer to a question of Sagan and collaborators. All formulas established in the paper are unimodal, most by a result of Kirillov and Reshetikhin. Many can be identified as specializations of Schur functions via the Jacobi-Trudi identities. If the number of arguments is sufficiently large, it is shown that any finite principal specialization of any Schur function $s_λ(1,q,q^2,\dots,q^{n-1})$ has a combinatorial realization as the distribution of the major index over a given set of tableaux.

Asymptotics of principal evaluations of Schubert polynomials for layered permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
Denote by $u(n)$ the largest principal specialization of the Schubert polynomial: $ u(n) := \max_{w \in S_n} \mathfrak{S}_w(1,\ldots,1) $ Stanley conjectured in [arXiv:1704.00851] that there is a limit $\lim_{n\to \infty} \, \frac{1}{n^2} \log u(n), $ and asked for a limiting description of permutations achieving the maximum $u(n)$. Merzon and Smirnov conjectured in [arXiv:1410.6857] that this maximum is achieved on layered permutations. We resolve both Stanley's problems restricted to layered permutations.

Counting faces of nestohedra
A new algebraic formula for the numbers of faces of nestohedra is obtained. The enumerator function $F(P_B)$ of positive lattice points in interiors of maximal cones of the normal fan of the nestohedron $P_B$ associated to a building set $B$ is described as a morphism from the certain combinatorial Hopf algebra of building sets to quasisymmetric functions. We define the $q$-analog $F_q(P_B)$ and derive its determining recurrence relations. The $f$-polynomial of the nestohedron $P_B$ appears as the principal specialization of the quasisymmetric function $F_q(P_B)$.
A bijective proof of Macdonald's reduced word formula
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give a bijective proof of Macdonald's reduced word identity using pipe dreams and Little's bumping algorithm. This proof extends to a principal specialization due to Fomin and Stanley. Such a proof has been sought for over 20 years. Our bijective tools also allow us to solve a problem posed by Fomin and Kirillov from 1997 using work of Wachs, Lenart, Serrano and Stump. These results extend earlier work by the third author on a Markov process for reduced words of the longest permutation.

Counting faces of graphical zonotopes
It is a classical fact that the number of vertices of the graphical zonotope $Z_Γ$ is equal to the number of acyclic orientations of a graph $Γ$. We show that the $f$-polynomial of $Z_Γ$ is obtained as the principal specialization of the $q$-analog of the chromatic symmetric function of $Γ$.

Rigged Configurations and Catalan, Stretched Parabolic Kostka Numbers and Polynomials: Polynomiality, Unimodality and Log-concavity
Published • View PublicationBIB
We will look at the Catalan numbers from the {\it Rigged Configurations} point of view originated \cite{Kir} from an combinatorial analysis of the Bethe Ansatz Equations associated with the higher spin anisotropic Heisenberg models . Our strategy is to take a combinatorial interpretation of Catalan numbers $C_n$ as the number of standard Young tableaux of rectangular shape $(n^2)$, or equivalently, as the Kostka number $K_{(n^2),1^{2n}}$, as the starting point of research. We observe that the rectangular (or multidimensional) Catalan numbers $ C(m,n)$ introduced and studied by P. MacMahon \cite{Mc}, \cite{Su1}, see also \cite{Su2}, can be identified with the Kostka number $K_{(n^m),1^{mn}}$, and therefore can be treated by Rigged Configurations technique. Based on this technique we study the stretched Kostka numbers and polynomials, and give a proof of `` a strong rationality `` of the stretched Kostka polynomials. This result implies a polynomiality property of the stretched Kostka and stretched Littlewood--Richardson coefficients \cite{KT}, \cite{Ras}, \cite{Ki1}. Another application of the Rigged Configuration technique presented, is a new family of counterexamples to Okounkov's log-concavity conjecture \cite{Ok}. Finally, we apply Rigged Configurations technique to give a combinatorial prove of the unimodality of the principal specialization of the internal product of Schur functions. In fact we prove a combinatorial formula for generalized $q$-Gaussian polynomials which is a far generalization of the so-called $KOH$-identity \cite{O}, as well as it manifests the unimodality property of the $q$-Gaussian polynomials.

On a family of symmetric rational functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper is about a family of symmetric rational functions that form a one-parameter generalization of the classical Hall-Littlewood polynomials. We introduce two sets of (skew and non-skew) functions that are akin to P and Q Hall-Littlewood polynomials. We establish (a) a combinatorial formula that represents our functions as partition functions for certain path ensembles in the square grid; (b) symmetrization formulas for non-skew functions; (c) identities of Cauchy and Pieri type; (d) explicit formulas for principal specializations; (e) two types of orthogonality relations for non-skew functions. Our construction is closely related to the half-infinite volume, finite magnon sector limit of the higher spin six-vertex (or XXZ) model, with both sets of functions representing higher spin six-vertex partition functions and/or transfer-matrices for certain domains.

Sums of squares of the Littlewood-Richardson coefficients and GL(n)-harmonic polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider the example from invariant theory concerning the conjugation action of the general linear group on several copies of the $n \times n$ matrices, and examine a symmetric function which stably describes the Hilbert series for the invariant ring with respect to the multigradation by degree. The terms of this Hilbert series may be described as a sum of squares of Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. A "principal specialization" of the gradation is then related to the Hilbert series of the $\K$-invariant subring in the $\GL_n$-harmonic polynomials, where $\K$ denotes a block diagonal embedding of a product of general linear groups. We also consider other specializations of this Hilbert series.

Eulerian quasisymmetric functions for the type B Coxeter group and other wreath product groups
Published in Adv. in Appl. Math. 48 (2012) 465-505 • View PublicationBIB
Eulerian quasisymmetric functions were introduced by Shareshian and Wachs in order to obtain a q-analog of Euler's exponential generating function formula for the Eulerian numbers. They are defined via the symmetric group, and applying the stable and nonstable principal specializations yields formulas for joint distributions of permutation statistics. We consider the wreath product of the cyclic group with the symmetric group, also known as the group of colored permutations. We use this group to introduce colored Eulerian quasisymmetric functions, which are a generalization of Eulerian quasisymmetric functions. We derive a formula for the generating function of these colored Eulerian quasisymmetric functions, which reduces to a formula of Shareshian and Wachs for the Eulerian quasisymmetric functions. We show that applying the stable and nonstable principal specializations yields formulas for joint distributions of colored permutation statistics, which generalize the Shareshian-Wachs q-analog of Euler's formula, formulas of Foata and Han, and a formula of Chow and Gessel.

Spin invariant theory for the symmetric group
Published in Journal of Pure and Applied Algebra 215 (2011), 1569--1581 • View PublicationBIB
We formulate a theory of invariants for the spin symmetric group in some suitable modules which involve the polynomial and exterior algebras. We solve the corresponding graded multiplicity problem in terms of specializations of the Schur Q-functions and a shifted q-hook formula. In addition, we provide a bijective proof for a formula of the principal specialization of the Schur Q-functions.
The q-Log-convexity of the Generating Functions of the Squares of Binomial Coefficients
We prove a conjecture of Liu and Wang on the q-log-convexity of the polynomial sequence $\{\sum_{k=0}^n{n\choose k}^2q^k\}_{n\geq 0}$. By using Pieri's rule and the Jacobi-Trudi identity for Schur functions, we obtain an expansion of a sum of products of elementary symmetric functions in terms of Schur functions with nonnegative coefficients. Then the principal specialization leads to the q-log-convexity. We also prove that a technical condition of Liu and Wang holds for the squares of the binomial coefficients. Hence we deduce that the linear transformation with respect to the triangular array $\{{n\choose k}^2\}_{0\leq k\leq n}$ is log-convexity preserving.
Schur Positivity and the $q$-Log-convexity of the Narayana Polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
Using Schur positivity and the principal specialization of Schur functions, we provide a proof of a recent conjecture of Liu and Wang on the $q$-log-convexity of the Narayana polynomials, and a proof of the second conjecture that the Narayana transformation preserves the log-convexity. Based on a formula of Bränd$\mathrm{\acute{e}}$n which expresses the $q$-Narayana numbers as the specializations of Schur functions, we derive several symmetric function identities using the Littlewood-Richardson rule for the product of Schur functions, and obtain the strong $q$-log-convexity of the Narayana polynomials and the strong $q$-log-concavity of the $q$-Narayana numbers.

Edge colouring models for the Tutte polynomial and related graph invariants
For integer q>1, we derive edge q-colouring models for (i) the Tutte polynomial of a graph G on the hyperbola H_q, (ii) the symmetric weight enumerator of the set of group-valued q-flows of G, and (iii) a more general vertex colouring model partition function that includes these polynomials and the principal specialization order q of Stanley's symmetric monochrome polynomial. In the second half of the paper we exhibit a family of non-symmetric edge q-colouring models defined on k-regular graphs, whose partition functions for q >= k each evaluate the number of proper edge k-colourings of G when G is Pfaffian.

A difference-integral representation of Koornwinder polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
We construct new families of (q-) difference and (contour) integral operators having nice actions on Koornwinder's multivariate orthogonal polynomials. We further show that the Koornwinder polynomials can be constructed by suitable sequences of these operators applied to the constant polynomial 1, giving the difference-integral representation of the title. Macdonald's conjectures (as proved by van Diejen and Sahi) for the principal specialization and norm follow immediately, as does a Cauchy-type identity of Mimachi.

Ubiquity of Kostka polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
We report about results revolving around Kostka-Foulkes and parabolic Kostka polynomials and their connections with Representation Theory and Combinatorics. It appears that the set of all parabolic Kostka polynomials forms a semigroup, which we call {\it Liskova semigroup}. We show that polynomials frequently appearing in Representation Theory and Combinatorics belong to the Liskova semigroup. Among such polynomials we study rectangular $q$-Catalan numbers; generalized exponents polynomials; principal specializations of the internal product of Schur functions; generalized $q$-Gaussian polynomials; parabolic Kostant partition function and its $q$-analog; certain generating functions on the set of transportation matrices. In each case we apply rigged configurations technique to obtain some interesting and new information about Kostka-Foulkes and parabolic Kostka polynomials, Kostant partition function, MacMahon, Gelfand-Tsetlin and Chan-Robbins polytopes. We describe certain connections between generalized saturation and Fulton's conjectures and parabolic Kostka polynomials; domino tableaux and rigged configurations. We study also some properties of $l$-restricted generalized exponents and the stable behaviour of certain Kostka-Foulkes polynomials.
