Genus distribution polynomials for bicellular bicolored maps all with real zeros
Enumerating bicolored maps and maps according to the numbers (and possibly types) of edges, faces, white vertices, black vertices and genus has been an important topic arising in many fields of mathematics and physics. In particular, Jackson (1987), Zagier (1995) and Stanley (2011) respectively obtained some expressions for the generating polynomial of the numbers of one-face bicolored maps with given number of edges and white vertex degree distribution while tracking the number of black vertices. The cases for multiple faces are harder. In this paper, we first obtain the number for that of bicolored maps with two faces, i.e., bicellular, of arbitrary length distribution, and then derive an explicit formula for the corresponding generating polynomial with respect to genus. We next prove that the generating polynomial essentially has only real zeros and thus the genus distribution is log-concave.

Explicit formulas for a family of hypermaps beyond the one-face case
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory Series A, 206 (2024), Article 105905 • View PublicationBIB
Enumeration of hypermaps is widely studied in many fields. In particular, enumerating hypermaps with a fixed edge-type according to the number of faces and genus is one topic of great interest. However, it is challenging and explicit results mainly exist for hypermaps having one face, especially for the edge-type corresponding to maps. The first systematic study of one-face hypermaps with any fixed edge-type is the work of Jackson (Trans.~Amer.~Math.~Soc.~299, 785--801, 1987) using group characters. In 2011, Stanley obtained the generating polynomial of one-face hypermaps of any fixed edge-type expressed in terms of the backward shift operator. There are also enormous amount of work on enumerating one-face hypermaps of specific edge-types. The enumeration of hypermaps with more faces is generally much harder. In this paper, we make some progress in that regard, and obtain the generating polynomials and properties for a family of typical two-face hypermaps with almost any fixed edge-type.

New equidistributions on plane trees and decompositions of $132$-avoiding permutations
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, 31(3) (2024), P3.24 • View PublicationBIB
Our main results in this paper are new equidistributions on plane trees and $132$-avoiding permutations, two closely related objects. As for the former, we discover a characteristic for vertices of plane trees that is equally distributed as the height for vertices. The latter is concerned with four distinct ways of decomposing a $132$-avoiding permutation into subsequences. We show combinatorially that the subsequence length distributions of the four decompositions are mutually equivalent, and there is a way to group the four into two groups such that each group is symmetric and the joint length distribution of one group is the same as that of the other. Some consequences are discussed. For instance, we provide a new refinement of the equidistribution of internal vertices and leaves, and present new sets of $132$-avoiding permutations that are counted by the Motzkin numbers and their refinements.
