Bijective proofs of skew Schur polynomial factorizations
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A Volume 174, August 2020, 105241, 40pp • View PublicationBIB
In a recent paper, Ayyer and Behrend present for a wide class of partitions factorizations of Schur polynomials with an even number of variables where half of the variables are the reciprocals of the others into symplectic and/or orthogonal group characters, thereby generalizing results of Ciucu and Krattenthaler for rectangular shapes. Their proofs proceed by manipulations of determinants underlying the characters. The purpose of the current paper is to provide bijective proofs of such factorizations. The quantities involved have known combinatorial interpretations in terms of Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns of various types or half Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns, which can in turn be transformed into perfect matchings of weighted trapezoidal honeycomb graphs. An important ingredient is then Ciucu's theorem for graphs with reflective symmetry. However, before being able to apply it, we need to employ a certain averaging procedure in order to achieve symmetric edge weights. This procedure is based on a "randomized" bijection, which can however also be turned into a classical bijection. For one type of Schur polynomial factorization, we also need an additional graph operation that almost doubles the underlying graph. Finally, our combinatorial proofs reveal that the factorizations under consideration can in fact also be generalized to skew shapes as discussed at the end of the paper.

The Hopf structure of symmetric group characters as symmetric functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
In arXiv:1605.06672 the authors introduced inhomogeneous bases of the ring of symmetric functions. The elements in these bases have the property that they evaluate to characters of symmetric groups. In this article we develop further properties of these bases by proving product and coproduct formulae. In addition, we give the transition coefficients between the elementary symmetric functions and the irreducible character basis.

Set-partition tableaux and representations of diagram algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
The partition algebra is an associative algebra with a basis of set-partition diagrams and multiplication given by diagram concatenation. It contains as subalgebras a large class of diagram algebras including the Brauer, planar partition, rook monoid, rook-Brauer, Temperley-Lieb, Motzkin, planar rook monoid, and symmetric group algebras. We give a construction of the irreducible modules of these algebras in two isomorphic ways: first, as the span of symmetric diagrams on which the algebra acts by conjugation twisted with an irreducible symmetric group representation and, second, on a basis indexed by set-partition tableaux such that diagrams in the algebra act combinatorially on tableaux. The first representation is analogous to the Gelfand model and the second is a generalization of Young's natural representation of the symmetric group on standard tableaux. The methods of this paper work uniformly for the partition algebra and its diagram subalgebras. As an application, we express the characters of each of these algebras as nonnegative integer combinations of symmetric group characters whose coefficients count fixed points under conjugation.

Factorization theorems for classical group characters, with applications to alternating sign matrices and plane partitions
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 165 (2019) 78-105 • View PublicationBIB
We show that, for a certain class of partitions and an even number of variables of which half are reciprocals of the other half, Schur polynomials can be factorized into products of odd and even orthogonal characters. We also obtain related factorizations involving sums of two Schur polynomials, and certain odd-sized sets of variables. Our results generalize the factorization identities proved by Ciucu and Krattenthaler (Advances in combinatorial mathematics, 39-59, 2009) for partitions of rectangular shape. We observe that if, in some of the results, the partitions are taken to have rectangular or double-staircase shapes and all of the variables are set to 1, then factorization identities for numbers of certain plane partitions, alternating sign matrices and related combinatorial objects are obtained.

On the Existence of Tableaux with Given Modular Major Index
Published • View PublicationBIB
We provide simple necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a standard Young tableau of a given shape and major index $r$ mod $n$, for all $r$. Our result generalizes the $r=1$ case due essentially to (1974) and proves a recent conjecture due to Sundaram (2016) for the $r=0$ case. A byproduct of the proof is an asymptotic equidistribution result for "almost all" shapes. The proof uses a representation-theoretic formula involving Ramanujan sums and normalized symmetric group character estimates. Further estimates involving "opposite" hook lengths are given which are well-adapted to classifying which partitions $λ\vdash n$ have $f^λ\leq n^d$ for fixed $d$. We also give a new proof of a generalization of the hook length formula due to Fomin-Lulov (1995) for symmetric group characters at rectangles. We conclude with some remarks on unimodality of symmetric group characters.

Symmetric group characters as symmetric functions
Published in Adv. Math. 390 (2021), Paper No. 107943 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a basis of the symmetric functions that evaluates to the (irreducible) characters of the symmetric group, just as the Schur functions evaluate to the irreducible characters of $GL_n$ modules. Our main result gives three different characterizations for this basis. One of the characterizations shows that the structure coefficients for the (outer) product of these functions are the stable Kronecker coefficients. The results in this paper focus on developing the fundamental properties of this basis.
Discrete analogues of Macdonald-Mehta integrals
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A 144 (2016), 80-138 • View PublicationBIB
We consider discretisations of the Macdonald--Mehta integrals from the theory of finite reflection groups. For the classical groups, $\mathrm{A}_{r-1}$, $\mathrm{B}_r$ and $\mathrm{D}_r$, we provide closed-form evaluations in those cases for which the Weyl denominators featuring in the summands have exponents $1$ and $2$. Our proofs for the exponent-$1$ cases rely on identities for classical group characters, while most of the formulas for the exponent-$2$ cases are derived from a transformation formula for elliptic hypergeometric series for the root system $\mathrm{BC}_r$. As a byproduct of our results, we obtain closed-form product formulas for the (ordinary and signed) enumeration of orthogonal and symplectic tableaux contained in a box.

Symmetric group characters as symmetric functions (extended abstract)
The irreducible characters of the symmetric group are a symmetric polynomial in the eigenvalues of a permutation matrix. They can therefore be realized as a symmetric function that can be evaluated at a set of variables and form a basis of the symmetric functions. This basis of the symmetric functions is of non-homogeneous degree and the (outer) product structure coefficients are the stable Kronecker coefficients. We introduce the irreducible character basis by defining it in terms of the induced trivial characters of the symmetric group which also form a basis of the symmetric functions. The irreducible character basis is closely related to character polynomials and we obtain some of the change of basis coefficients by making this connection explicit. Other change of basis coefficients come from a representation theoretic connection with the partition algebra, and still others are derived by developing combinatorial expressions. This document is an extended abstract which can be used as a review reference so that this basis can be implemented in Sage. A more complete version of the results in this abstract can be found in {\tt arXiv:1605.06672}.

FI_W-modules and constraints on classical Weyl group characters
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we study the characters of sequences of representations of any of the three families of classical Weyl groups W_n: the symmetric groups, the signed permutation groups (hyperoctahedral groups), or the even-signed permutation groups. Our results extend work of Church, Ellenberg, Farb, and Nagpal on the symmetric groups. We use the concept of an FI_W-module, an algebraic object that encodes the data of a sequence of W_n-representations with maps between them, defined in the author's recent work ArXiv:1309.3817. We show that if a sequence {V_n} of W_n-representations has the structure of a finitely generated FI_W-module, then there are substantial constraints on the growth of the sequence and the structure of the characters: for n large, the dimension of V_n is equal to a polynomial in n, and the characters of V_n are given by a character polynomial in signed-cycle-counting class functions, independent of n. We determine bounds the degrees of these polynomials. We continue to develop the theory of FI_W-modules, and we apply this theory to obtain new results about a number of sequences associated to the classical Weyl groups: the cohomology of complements of classical Coxeter hyperplane arrangements, and the cohomology of the pure string motion groups (the groups of symmetric automorphisms of the free group).

Another proof of Harer-Zagier formula
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a regular $2n$-gon there are $(2n-1)!!$ ways to match and glue the $2n$ sides. The Harer-Zagier bivariate generating function enumerates the gluings by $n$ and the genus $g$ of the attendant surface and leads to a recurrence equation for the counts of gluings with parameters $n$ and $g$. This formula was originally obtained by using the multidimensional Gaussian integrals. Soon after Jackson and later Zagier found alternative proofs that used the symmetric group characters. In this note we give a different, characters-based, proof. Its core is computing and marginally inverting Fourier transform of the underlying probability measure on $S_{2n}$. Aside from Murnaghan-Nakayama rule for one-hook diagrams, the counting techniques we use are of elementary, combinatorial nature.

Half-turn symmetric alternating sign matrices and Tokuyama type factorisation for orthogonal group characters
Published • View PublicationBIB
Half turn symmetric alternating sign matrices (HTSASMs) are special variations of the well-known alternating sign matrices which have a long and fascinating history. HTSASMs are interesting combinatorial objects in their own right and have been the focus of recent study. Here we explore counting weighted HTSASMs with respect to a number of statistics to derive an orthogonal group version of Tokuyama's factorisation formula, which involves a deformation and expansion of Weyl's denominator formula multiplied by a general linear group character. Deformations of Weyl's original denominator formula to other root systems have been discovered by Okada and Simpson, and it is thus natural to ask for versions of Tokuyama's factorisation formula involving other root systems. Here we obtain such a formula involving a deformation of Weyl's denominator formula for the orthogonal group multiplied by a deformation of an orthogonal group character.

Primitive factorizations, Jucys-Murphy elements, and matrix models
Published • View PublicationBIB
A factorization of a permutation into transpositions is called "primitive" if its factors are weakly ordered. We discuss the problem of enumerating primitive factorizations of permutations, and its place in the hierarchy of previously studied factorization problems. Several formulas enumerating minimal primitive and possibly non-minimal primitive factorizations are presented, and interesting connections with Jucys-Murphy elements, symmetric group characters, and matrix models are described.

A factorization theorem for classical group characters, with applications to plane partitions and rhombus tilings
Published in in: Advances in Combinatorial Mathematics: Proceedings of the Waterloo Workshop in Computer Algebra 2008, I. Kotsireas, E. Zima (eds.), Springer-Verlag, 2010, pp. 39-60. • View PublicationBIB
We prove that a Schur function of rectangular shape $(M^n)$ whose variables are specialized to $x_1,x_1^{-1},...,x_n,x_n^{-1}$ factorizes into a product of two odd orthogonal characters of rectangular shape, one of which is evaluated at $-x_1,...,-x_n$, if $M$ is even, while it factorizes into a product of a symplectic character and an even orthogonal character, both of rectangular shape, if $M$ is odd. It is furthermore shown that the first factorization implies a factorization theorem for rhombus tilings of a hexagon, which has an equivalent formulation in terms of plane partitions. A similar factorization theorem is proven for the sum of two Schur functions of respective rectangular shapes $(M^n)$ and $(M^{n-1})$.

Symmetric Group Character Degrees and Hook Numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this article we prove the following result: that for any two natural numbers k and j, and for all sufficiently large symmetric groups Sym(n), there are k disjoint sets of j irreducible characters of Sym(n), such that each set consists of characters with the same degree, and distinct sets have different degrees. In particular, this resolves a conjecture most recently made by Moretó. The methods employed here are based upon the duality between irreducible characters of the symmetric groups and the partitions to which they correspond. Consequently, the paper is combinatorial in nature.

Stanley's character polynomials and coloured factorizations in the symmetric group

Stanley introduces polynomials which help evaluate symmetric group characters and conjectures that the coefficients of the polynomials are positive. Stanley later gives a conjectured combinatorial interpretation for the coefficients of the polynomials. Here, we prove the conjecture for the terms of highest degree.

A conjectured combinatorial interpretation of the normalized irreducible character values of the symmetric group
In math.CO/0109093 the author obtained a formula for the value of an irreducible symmetric group character indexed by a partition of rectangular shape. In the present paper this formula is (conjecturally) generalized to arbitrary shapes.

Tiles with no spectra
Published • View PublicationBIB
We exhibit a subset of a finite Abelian group, which tiles the group by translation, and such that its tiling complements do not have a common spectrum (orthogonal basis for their $L^2$ space consisting of group characters). This disproves the Universal Spectrum Conjecture of Lagarias and Wang. Further, we construct a set in some finite Abelian group, which tiles the group but has no spectrum. We extend this last example to the groups $\ZZ^d$ and $\RR^d$ (for $d \ge 5$) thus disproving one direction of the Spectral Set Conjecture of Fuglede. The other direction was recently disproved by Tao.

Identities for classical group characters of nearly rectangular shape
Published in J. Algebra 209 (1998), 1-64 • View PublicationBIB
We derive several identities that feature irreducible characters of the general linear, the symplectic, the orthogonal, and the special orthogonal groups. All the identities feature characters that are indexed by shapes that are "nearly" rectangular, by which we mean that the shapes are rectangles except for one row or column that might be shorter than the others. As applications we prove new results in plane partitions and tableaux enumeration, including new refinements of the Bender-Knuth and MacMahon (ex-)conjectures.
