Multi-Symmetric Schur Functions
We study a multi-symmetric generalization of the classical Schur functions called the multi-symmetric Schur functions. These functions form an integral basis for the ring of multi-symmetric functions indexed by tuples of partitions and are defined as certain stable-limits of key polynomials. We prove combinatorial results about the monomial expansions of the multi-symmetric Schur functions including a diagrammatic combinatorial formula and a triangularity result which completely characterizes their monomial multi-symmetric supports. The triangularity result involves a non-trivial generalization of the dominance order on partitions to tuples of partitions. We prove, using the Demazure character formula, that the multi-symmetric Schur functions expand positively into the basis of tensor products of ordinary Schur functions and describe the expansion coefficients as multiplicities of certain irreducible representations for Levi subgroups inside particular Demazure modules. Lastly, we find a family of multi-symmetric plethystic operators related to the classical Bernstein operators which act on the multi-symmetric Schur basis by a simple recurrence relation.

Web permutations, Seidel triangle and normalized $γ$-coefficients
The web permutations were introduced by Hwang, Jang and Oh to interpret the entries of the transition matrix between the Specht and $\mathrm{SL}_2$-web bases of the irreducible $§_{2n}$-representation indexed by $(n,n)$. They conjectured that certain classes of web permutations are enumerated by the Seidel triangle. Using generating functions, Xu and Zeng showed that enumerating web permutations by the number of drops, fixed points and cycles gives rise to the normalized $γ$-coefficients of the $(α,t)$-Eulerian polynomials. They posed the problems to prove their result combinatorially and to find an interpretation of the normalized $γ$-coefficients in terms of cycle-up-down permutations. In this work, we prove the enumerative conjecture of Hwang-Jang-Oh and answer the two open problems proposed by Xu and Zeng.

The Moebius function on the lattice of normal subgroups
By studying lattices of normal subgroups, especially those of the socle and radical, an expression is obtained for the minimal number of conjugacy classes required to generate a group. This number is shown to be captured by the character table. The Moebius function is then used to extract information on the faithful irreducible representations of a group.
Group Invariant Quantum Latin Squares
A quantum Latin square is an $n \times n$ array of unit vectors where each row and column forms an orthonormal basis of a fixed complex vector space. We introduce the notion of $(G,G')$-invariant quantum Latin squares for finite groups $G$ and $G'$. These are quantum Latin squares with rows and columns indexed by $G$ and $G'$ respectively such that the inner product of the $a,b$-entry with the $c,d$-entry depends only on $a^{-1}c \in G$ and $b^{-1}d \in G'$. This definition is motivated by the notion of group invariant bijective correlations introduced in [Roberson \& Schmidt (2020)], and every group invariant quantum Latin square produces a group invariant bijective correlation, though the converse does not hold. In this work we investigate these group invariant quantum Latin squares and their corresponding correlations. Our main result is that, up to applying a global isometry to every vector in a $(G,G')$-invariant quantum Latin square, there is a natural bijection between these objects and trace and conjugate transpose preserving isomorphisms between the group algebras of $G$ and $G'$. This in particular proves that a $(G,G')$-invariant quantum Latin square exists if and only if the multisets of degrees of irreducible representations are equal for $G$ and $G'$. Another motivation for this line of work is that whenever Cayley graphs for groups $G$ and $G'$ are quantum isomorphic, then there is a $(G,G')$-invariant quantum correlation witnessing this, and thus it suffices to consider such correlations when searching for quantum isomorphic Cayley graphs. Given a group invariant quantum correlation, we show how to construct all pairs of graphs for which it gives a quantum isomorphism.

On Minimal Polynomials of Elements in Symmetric and Alternating Groups
Let $ (ρ, V) $ be an irreducible representation of the symmetric group $ S_n$ (or the alternating group $ A_n$), and let $ g $ be a permutation on $n$ letters with each of its cycle lengths divides the length of its largest cycle. We describe completely the minimal polynomial of $ρ(g)$, showing that, in most cases, it equals $x^{o(g)} - 1 $, with a few explicit exceptions. As a by-product, we obtain a new proof (using only combinatorics and representation theory) of a theorem of Swanson that gives a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a standard Young tableau of a given shape and major index $r \ \text{mod} \ n$, for all $r$. Thereby, we give a new proof of a celebrated result of Klyachko on Lie elements in a tensor algebra, and of a conjecture of Sundaram on the existence of an invariant vector for $n$-cycles. We also show that for elements $g$ in $S_n$ or $A_n$ of even order, in most cases, $ρ(g)$ has eigenvalue $-1$, with a few explicit exceptions.
The support of Kostant's weight multiplicity formula is an order ideal in the weak Bruhat order
For integral weights $λ$ and $μ$ of a classical simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$, Kostant's weight multiplicity formula gives the multiplicity of the weight $μ$ in the irreducible representation with highest weight $λ$, which we denote by $m(λ,μ)$. Kostant's weight multiplicity formula is an alternating sum over the Weyl group of the Lie algebra whose terms are determined via a vector partition function. The Weyl alternation set $\mathcal{A}(λ,μ)$ is the set of elements of the Weyl group that contribute nontrivially to the multiplicity $m(λ,μ)$. In this article, we prove that Weyl alternation sets are order ideals in the weak Bruhat order of the corresponding Weyl group. Specializing to the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sl}_{r+1}(\mathbb{C})$, we give a complete characterization of the Weyl alternation sets $\mathcal{A}(\tildeα,μ)$, where $\tildeα$ is the highest root and $μ$ is a negative root, answering a question of Harry posed in 2024. We also provide some enumerative results that pave the way for our future work, where we aim to prove Harry's conjecture that the $q$-analog of Kostant's weight multiplicity formula is $m_q(\tildeα,μ)=q^{r+j-i+1}+q^{r+j-i}-q^{j-i+1}$ when $μ=-(α_i+α_{i+1}+\cdots+α_{j})$ is a negative root of $\mathfrak{sl}_{r+1}(\mathbb{C})$.

Random permutations acting on $k$--tuples have near--optimal spectral gap for $k=\mathrm{poly}(n)$
We extend Friedman's theorem to show that, for any fixed $r>1$, a random $2r$--regular Schreier graph associated with the action of $r$ uniformly random permutations of $[n]$ on $k_{n}$--tuples of distinct elements in $[n]$ has a near--optimal spectral gap with high probability, provided $k_{n}\leq n^{\frac{1}{20}-ε}.$ Previously this was known only for $k$--tuples where $k$ is fixed. In fact, we prove the stronger result of strong convergence of random permutations in irreducible representations of quasi--exponential dimension. Along the way, we give a new bound for the expected stable irreducible character of a random permutation obtained via a word map, showing that $\mathbb{E}\left[χ^μ\left(w(σ_{1},\dots,σ_{r})\right)\right]=O\left(\frac{1}{\dimχ^μ}\right)=O\left(n^{-k}\right)$, where $k$ is the number of boxes outside the first row of the Young diagram $μ,$ solving one aspect of a conjecture of Hanany and Puder. We obtain this bound using an extension of Wise's $w$--cycle conjecture.

An arithmetic algebraic regularity lemma
We give an 'arithmetic regularity lemma' for groups definable in finite fields, analogous to Tao's 'algebraic regularity lemma' for graphs definable in finite fields. More specifically, we show that, for any $M>0$, any finite field $\mathbf{F}$, and any definable group $(G,\cdot)$ in $\mathbf{F}$ and definable subset $D\subseteq G$, each of complexity at most $M$, there is a normal definable subgroup $H\leqslant G$, of index and complexity $O_M(1)$, such that the following holds: for any cosets $V,W$ of $H$, the bipartite graph $(V,W,xy^{-1}\in D)$ is $O_M(|\mathbf{F}|^{-1/2})$-quasirandom. Various analogous regularity conditions follow; for example, for any $g\in G$, the Fourier coefficient $||\widehat{1}_{H\cap Dg}(π)||_{\mathrm{op}}$ is $O_M(|\mathbf{F}|^{-1/8})$ for every non-trivial irreducible representation $π$ of $H$.
Representation stability in the (co)homology of vertical configuration spaces
In this paper, we study sequences of topological spaces called "vertical configuration spaces" of points in Euclidean space. We apply the theory of FI$_G$-modules, and results of Bianchi-Kranhold, to show that their (co)homology groups are "representation stable" with respect to natural actions of wreath products $S_k \wr S_n$. In particular, we show that in each (co)homological degree, the (co)homology groups (viewed as $S_k \wr S_n$-representations) can be expressed as induced representations of a specific form. Consequently, the characters of their rational (co)homology groups, and the patterns of irreducible $S_k \wr S_n$-representation constituents of these groups, stabilize in a strong sense. In addition, we give a new proof of rational (co)homological stability for unordered vertical configuration spaces, with an improved stable range.

Murnaghan--Nakayama rules for symplectic, orthogonal and orthosymplectic Schur functions
Published in Discrete Mathematics, Volume 349, Issue 2, February 2026, 114741 • Search Publication
We establish new Murnaghan--Nakayama rules for symplectic, orthogonal and orthosymplectic Schur functions. The classical Murnaghan--Nakayama rule expresses the product of a power sum symmetric function with a Schur function as a linear combination of Schur functions. Symplectic and orthogonal Schur functions correspond to characters of irreducible representations of symplectic and orthogonal groups. Orthosymplectic Schur functions arise as characters of orthosymplectic Lie superalgebras and are hybrids of symplectic and ordinary Schur functions. We derive explicit formulas for the product of the relevant power-sum function with each of these functions, which can partly be described combinatorially using border strip manipulations. Our Murnaghan--Nakayama rules each include three distinct terms: a classical term corresponding to the addition of border strips to the relevant Young diagram, a term involving the removal of border strips, and a third term, which we describe both algebraically and combinatorially.

Action of free fermions on Symmetric Functions
The Clifford algebra of the endomorphisms of the exterior algebra of a countably dimensional vector space induces natural bosonic shadows, i.e. families of linear maps between the cohomologies of complex grassmannians. The main result of this paper is to provide a determinantal formula expressing generating functions of such endomorphisms unifying several classical special cases. For example the action over a point recovers the Jacobi-Trudy formula in the theory of symmetric functions or the Giambelli's one in classical Schubert calculus, whereas the action of degree preserving endomorphisms take into account the finite type version of the Date-Jimbo-Kashiwara-Miwa bosonic vertex operator representation of the Lie algebra $gl(\infty)$. The fermionic actions on (finite type) bosonic spaces is described in terms of the classical theory of symmetric functions. The main guiding principle is the fact that the exterior algebra is a (non irreducible) representation of the ring of symmetric functions, which is the way we use to spell the ``finite type'' Boson-Fermion correspondence.

Rigidity of symmetric frameworks with non-free group actions on the vertices
For plane frameworks with reflection or rotational symmetries, where the group action is not necessarily free on the vertex set, we introduce a phase-symmetric orbit rigidity matrix for each irreducible representation of the group. We then use these generalised orbit rigidity matrices to provide necessary conditions for infinitesimal rigidity for frameworks that are symmetric with a cyclic group that acts freely or non-freely on the vertices. Moreover, for the reflection, the half-turn, and the three-fold rotational group in the plane, we establish complete combinatorial characterisations of symmetry-generic infinitesimally rigid frameworks. This extends well-known characterisations for these groups to the case when the group action is not necessarily free on the vertices. The presence of vertices that are fixed by non-trivial group elements requires the introduction of generalised versions of group-labelled quotient graphs leads to more refined types of combinatorial sparsity counts for characterising symmetry-generic infinitesimal rigidity.

A combinatorial interpretation of the Bernstein degree of unitary highest weight modules
Consider the $(\mathfrak{g}, K)$-modules $L_λ$ for unitary highest weight representations of the real reductive group $G_{\mathbb{R}} = \operatorname{U}(p,q)$, $\operatorname{Mp}(2n, \mathbb{R})$, or $\operatorname{O}^*(2n)$, where $\operatorname{Mp}(2n,\mathbb{R})$ denotes the metaplectic double cover of $\operatorname{Sp}(2n,\mathbb{R})$. Let $k$ be a positive integer. Corresponding to $G_{\mathbb{R}}$ via Howe duality is the compact group $\operatorname{U}(k)$, $\operatorname{O}(k)$, or $\operatorname{Sp}(k)$, respectively, for which every irreducible representation $σ$ corresponds to a unique $L_λ = L_{λ(σ)}$. Nishiyama-Ochiai-Taniguchi (2001) expressed the Bernstein degree $\operatorname{Deg} L_{λ(σ)}$ as the product of $\dim σ$ and the degree of the associated variety of $L_{λ(σ)}$; this result is valid when $k \leq r :=$ the real rank of $G_{\mathbb{R}}$. In this paper, for arbitrary $k$, we give a new combinatorial interpretation $\operatorname{Deg} L_{λ(σ)} = \#(\mathcal{Q}_k(σ) \times \mathcal{P}_k)$, where $\mathcal{Q}_k(σ)$ is a certain set of semistandard tableaux, whose cardinality (for $k \geq r$) interpolates between $\dim σ$ and the dimension of the simple $K$-module with highest weight $λ(σ)$. The set $\mathcal{P}_k$ consists of certain plane partitions that encode the Hilbert series of the associated variety. We exhibit analogous sets $\mathcal{P}_k$ of plane partitions for all real reductive groups of Hermitian type, including the exceptional groups.

Representation stability in the intrinsic hyperplane arrangements associated to irreducible representations of the symmetric-groups
Some of the most classically relevant Hyperplane arrangements are the Braid Arrangements $B_n$ and their associated compliment spaces $\mathcal{F}_n$. In their recent work, Tsilevich, Vershik, and Yuzvinsky construct what they refer to as the intrinsic hyperplane arrangement within any irreducible representation of the symmetric group that generalize the classical braid arrangements. Through examples it is also shown that the associated compliment spaces to these intrinsic arrangements display behaviors far removed from $\mathcal{F}_n$. In this work we study the intrinsic hyperplane arrangements of irreducible representations of the symmetric group from the perspective of representation stability. This work is both theoretical, proving representation stability theorems for hyperplane complements, as well as statistical, examining the outputs of a number of simulations designed to enumerate flats.

Diagram model for the Okada algebra and monoid
It is well known that the Young lattice is the Bratelli diagram of the symmetric groups expressing how irreducible representations restrict from $S_N$ to $S_{N-1}$. In 1988, Stanley discovered a similar lattice called the Young-Fibonacci lattice which was realized as the Bratelli diagram of a family of algebras by Okada in 1994. In this paper, we realize the Okada algebra and its associated monoid using a labeled version of Temperley-Lieb arc-diagrams. We prove in full generality that the dimension of the Okada algebra is $n!$. In particular, we interpret a natural bijection between permutations and labeled arc-diagrams as an instance of Fomin's Robinson-Schensted correspondence for the Young-Fibonacci lattice. We prove that the Okada monoid is aperiodic and describe its Green relations. Lifting those results to the algebra allows us to construct a cellular basis of the Okada algebra. }

Hook-Lengths, Symplectic/Orthogonal Contents and Amdeberhan's Conjectures
Published • View PublicationBIB
The symplectic/orthogonal contents of partitions are related to the dimensions of irreducible representations of symplectic/orthogonal groups. In 2012, motivated by Nekrasov--Okounkov's hook-length formula and Stanley's hook-content formula, Amdeberhan proposed several conjectures about infinite product formulas for certain generating functions of hook-lengths and symplectic/orthogonal contents. Some special cases of his conjectures were recently proved by Amdeberhan, Andrews and Ballantine. In this paper, we prove the general cases of Amdeberhan's conjectures.

Three Examples of Quasisymmetric Compatible $\mathfrak{S}_n$-modules
The Schur functions, a basis for the symmetric polynomials (Sym), encode the irreducible representations of the symmetric group, $\mathfrak{S}_n$, via the Frobenius characteristic map. In 1996, Krob and Thibon defined a quasisymmetric Frobenius map on the representations of $\mathcal{H}_n(0)$, mapping them to the quasisymmetric functions (QSym). Despite the obvious inclusion of Sym in QSym and the close relationship between $\mathfrak{S}_n$ and $\mathcal{H}_n(0)$, there is no known direct link between these two Frobenius characteristic maps and the related representations. We explore three specific situations in which a deformation of an $\mathfrak{S}_n$ action results in a valid $\mathcal{H}_n(0)$ action and gives a quasisymmetric Frobenius characteristic that is equal to the symmetric Frobenius characteristic. We introduce the concept of quasisymmetric compatibility, which formalizes a link between the two maps, and we show it applies to all $\mathfrak{S}_n$-modules.

Hook restriction coefficients
The permutation matrices form a subgroup of $\text{GL}_n(\mathbb{C})$ that is isomorphic to the symmetric group $S_n$. Let $r_{μλ}$ denote the multiplicity of the irreducible representation $V_μ$ of $S_n$, corresponding to a partition $μ$ of $n$, in the restriction of an irreducible polynomial representation $W_λ(\mathbb{C})$ of $\text{GL}_n(\mathbb{C})$, corresponding to a partition $λ$ with at most $n$ parts. Finding a combinatorial interpretation for $r_{μλ}$ remains an open problem in algebraic combinatorics, called the \emph{restriction problem}. We derive a new nonrecursive expression for a character polynomial called the \emph{Specht polynomial} and use it to find a combinatorial interpretation of $r_{μλ}$ when $λ$ is a hook-shaped partition.

On an $n$-ary generalization of the Lie representation and tree Specht modules
We continue our study, initiated in our prior work with Richard Stanley, of the representation of the symmetric group on the multilinear component of an $n$-ary generalization of the free Lie algebra known as the free Filippov $n$-algebra with $k$ brackets. Our ultimate aim is to determine the multiplicities of the irreducible representations in this representation. This had been done for the ordinary Lie representation ($n=2$ case) by Kraskiewicz and Weyman. The $k=2$ case was handled in our prior work, where the representation was shown to be isomorphic to $S^{2^{n-1}1}$. In this paper, for general $n$ and $k$, we obtain decomposition results that enable us to determine the multiplicities in the $k=3$ and $k=4$ cases. In particular we prove that in the $k=3$ case, the representation is isomorphic to $S^{3^{n-1}1} \oplus S^{3^{n-2}21^2}$. Our main result shows that the multiplicities stabilize in a certain sense when $n$ exceeds $k$. As an important tool in proving this, we present two types of generalizations of the notion of Specht module that involve trees.
