Average divisibility in character tables of $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb{F}_q)$
Let $q$ range over odd prime powers and let $G_q=\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb{F}_q)$. Fix a prime number $\ell$. Motivated by work of Peluse and Soundararajan on Miller's conjecture for character tables of symmetric groups, we study the proportion of entries in the character table of $G_q$ which are not divisible by $\ell$, in the sense of divisibility in the ring of algebraic integers. We prove that $N_\ell(q)=\frac{q^4}{2}+O_ε(q^{3+ε})$ for every $ε>0$, where $N_\ell(q)$ denotes the number of entries which are not divisible by $\ell$. We also show that the number of zero entries is $\frac{q^4}{2}+O_ε(q^{3+ε})$. Consequently, the proportion of all entries not divisible by $\ell$ tends to $1/2$, while the proportion of nonzero entries not divisible by $\ell$ tends to $1$. This differs significantly from the symmetric-group case, where almost every character-table entry is divisible by any fixed prime. We also prove an angular equidistribution result for the nonzero character values as $q\to\infty$. We show that the arguments become equidistributed in $[0,2π]$. This proves an analogue of Miller's question on the distribution of signs among the nonzero entries in character tables of symmetric groups.

Multivariable automatic arrays and transcendence
We study real numbers defined by multidimensional automatic arrays weighted by multiplicatively independent bases. Let $a_1, \dots, a_r\geq 2$ be integers such that $\log a_1, \dots, \log a_r$ are $\mathbb Q$-linearly independent. Given bounded automatic sequences $(p_n(i))_{n\geq 0}$ with $i=1, \dots , r$ and a function $f:\mathbb Z^r\rightarrow \mathbb Z$, we consider the associated series $α= \sum_{n_1,\dots,n_r \geq 0} \frac{f(p_{n_1}(1),\dots,p_{n_r}(r))}{a_1^{n_1}\cdots a_r^{n_r}}$. Using combinatorial properties of automatic sequences and Schmidt's Subspace Theorem, we prove that $α$ is either rational or transcendental. This extends a result of Adamczewski and Bugeaud to the multidimensional setting.

Distribution questions for isogeny graphs over finite fields
In the first part of the paper, we fix a non-CM elliptic curve $E/\mathbb{Q}$ and an odd prime $\ell$ and investigate the distribution of invariants associated to the $\ell$-volcano containing the reduction $E_p$, as $p$ ranges over primes of good ordinary reduction. Let $H(p)$ be the height of the volcano and let $d'(p)$ denote the relative position of $j(E_p)$ above the floor, and let $r\ge 0$ be an integer. Assuming that the $\ell$-adic Galois representation attached to $E$ is surjective, we derive an explicit formula for the natural density of primes $p$ for which $H(p)=r$ (resp.\ $d'(p)=r$). In the non-surjective case, we show that all sufficiently large heights occur with positive density. In the second part of the paper, we analyze the distribution of $\ell$-volcano heights over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ and consider the limit as $q\to\infty$. Using analytic estimates for sums of Hurwitz class numbers in arithmetic progressions, we compute exact limiting densities for ordinary elliptic curves whose $\ell$-isogeny graph has a prescribed height $r$.

Iwasawa theory and the representations of finite groups
In this note, I develop a representation-theoretic refinement of the Iwasawa theory of finite Cayley graphs. Building on analogies between graph zeta functions and number-theoretic L-functions, I study $\mathbb{Z}_\ell$-towers of Cayley graphs and the asymptotic growth of their Jacobians. My main result establishes that the Iwasawa polynomial associated to such a tower admits a canonical factorization indexed by the irreducible representations of the underlying group. This leads to the definition of representation-theoretic Iwasawa polynomials, whose properties are studied.

On the Iwasawa theory of Cayley graphs
Published in Research in the Mathematical Sciences Vol 12, No. 2 (2025) • View PublicationBIB
This paper explores Iwasawa theory from a graph theoretic perspective, focusing on the algebraic and combinatorial properties of Cayley graphs. Using representation theory, we analyze Iwasawa-theoretic invariants within $\mathbb{Z}_\ell$-towers of Cayley graphs, revealing connections between graph theory, number theory, and group theory. Key results include the factorization of associated Iwasawa polynomials and the decomposition of $μ$- and $λ$-invariants. Additionally, we apply these insights to complete graphs, establishing conditions under which these invariants vanish.

We consider the family of undirected Cayley graphs associated with odd cyclic groups, and study statistics for the eigenvalues in their spectra. Our results are motivated by analogies between arithmetic geometry and graph theory.

On the number of subrings of $\mathbb{Z}^n$ of prime power index
Let $n$ and $k$ be positive integers, and $f_n(k)$ (resp. $g_n(k)$) be the number of unital subrings (resp. unital irreducible subrings) of $\mathbb{Z}^n$ of index $k$. The numbers $f_n(k)$ are coefficients of certain zeta functions of natural interest. The function $k\mapsto f_n(k)$ is multiplicative, and the study of the numbers $f_n(k)$ reduces to computing the values at prime powers $k=p^e$. Given a composition $α=(α_1, \dots, α_{n-1})$ of $e$ into $n-1$ positive integers, let $g_α(p)$ denote the number of irreducible subrings of $\mathbb{Z}^n$ for which the associated upper triangular matrix in Hermite normal form has diagonal $(p^{α_1}, \dots, p^{α_{n-1}},1)$. Via combinatorial analysis, the computation of $f_n(p^e)$ reduces to the computation of $g_α(p)$ for all compositions of $i$ into $j$ parts, where $i\leq e$ and $j\leq n-1$. We extend results of Liu and Atanasov-Kaplan-Krakoff-Menzel, who explicitly compute $f_n(p^e)$ for $e\leq 8$. The case $e=9$ proves to be significantly more involved. We evaluate $f_n(e^9)$ explicitly in terms of a polynomial in n and p up to a single term which is conjecturally a polynomial. Our results provide further evidence for a conjecture, which states that for any fixed pair $(n,e)$, the function $p\mapsto f_n(p^e)$ is a polynomial in $p$. A conjecture of Bhargava on the asymptotics for $f_n(k)$ as a function of $k$ motivates the study of the asymptotics for $g_α(p)$ for certain infinite families of compositions $α$, for which we are able to obtain general estimates using techniques from the geometry of numbers.

An analogue of Kida's formula in graph theory
Published in Pure & Applied Math. Quarterly, Vol. 21 (2025) No. 5, pp. 1853-1891 • View PublicationBIB
Let $\ell$ be a rational prime and let $p:Y\rightarrow X$ be a Galois cover of finite graphs whose Galois group is a finite $\ell$-group. Consider a $\mathbb{Z}_{\ell}$-tower above $X$ and its pullback along $p$. Assuming that all the graphs in the pullback are connected, one obtains a $\mathbb{Z}_{\ell}$-tower above $Y$. Under the assumption that the Iwasawa $μ$-invariant of the tower above $X$ vanishes, we prove a formula relating the Iwasawa $λ$-invariant of the $\mathbb{Z}_{\ell}$-tower above $X$ to the Iwasawa $λ$-invariant of the pullback. This formula is analogous to Kida's formula in classical Iwasawa theory. We present an application to the study of structural properties of certain noncommutative pro-$\ell$ towers of graphs, based on an analogy with classical results of Cuoco on the growth of Iwasawa invariants in $\mathbb{Z}_\ell^2$-extensions of number fields. Our investigations are illustrated by explicit examples.
On the distribution of Iwasawa invariants associated to multigraphs
Published in Nagoya Math. J. 253 (2024), pp. 48-90 • View PublicationBIB
Let $\ell$ be a prime number. The Iwasawa theory of multigraphs is the systematic study of growth patterns in the number of spanning trees in abelian $\ell$-towers of multigraphs. In this context, growth patterns are realized by certain analogues of Iwasawa invariants, which depend on the prime $\ell$ and the abelian $\ell$-tower of multigraphs. We formulate and study statistical questions about the behaviour of the Iwasawa $μ$ and $λ$ invariants.
