A Gröbner Basis Approach to Combinatorial Nullstellensatz
In this paper, using some conditions that arise naturally in Alon's combinatorial Nullstellensatz as well as its various extensions and generalizations, we characterize Gröbner bases consisting of monic polynomials, which helps us to establish a Nullstellensatz from a Gröbner basis perspective. As corollaries of this general Nullstellensatz, we establish four special Nullstellensatz, which, among others, include a common generalization of the Nullstellensatz for multisets established in Kós, Rónyai and Mészáros \cite{23,24} and the Nullstellensatz with multiplicity established in Ball and Serra \cite{9}, and include a punctured Nullstellensatz, generalizing several existing results in the literature. As applications of our punctured Nullstellensatz, we extend some results on hyperplane covering in \cite{9,23,24} to wider settings, and give an alternative proof of the generalized Alon-Füredi theorem established in Bishnoi, Clark, Potukuchi and Schmitt \cite{12}. Unless specified otherwise, all our results are established over an arbitrary commutative ring $R$.

The Langberg-Médard Multiple Unicast Conjecture: Stable $3$-Pair Networks
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Langberg-Médard multiple unicast conjecture claims that for a strongly reachable $k$-pair network, there exists a multi-flow with rate $(1,1,\dots,1)$. In this paper, we show that the conjecture holds true for {\em stable} $3$-pair networks.

The Minimum Number of Hubs in Networks
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, a hub refers to a non-terminal vertex of degree at least three. We study the minimum number of hubs needed in a network to guarantee certain flow demand constraints imposed between multiple pairs of sources and sinks. We prove that under the constraints, regardless of the size or the topology of the network, such minimum number is always upper bounded and we derive tight upper bounds for some special parameters. In particular, for two pairs of sources and sinks, we present a novel path-searching algorithm, the analysis of which is instrumental for the derivations of the tight upper bounds.

Menger's Paths with Minimum Mergings
Published • View PublicationBIB
For an acyclic directed graph with multiple sources and multiple sinks, we prove that one can choose the Merger's paths between the sources and the sinks such that the number of mergings between these paths is upper bounded by a constant depending only on the min-cuts between the sources and the sinks, regardless of the size and topology of the graph. We also give bounds on the minimum number of mergings between these paths, and discuss how it depends on the min-cuts.

Generalized PSK in Space Time Coding
Published • View PublicationBIB
A wireless communication system using multiple antennas promises reliable transmission under Rayleigh flat fading assumptions. Design criteria and practical schemes have been presented for both coherent and non-coherent communication channels. In this paper we generalize one dimensional phase shift keying (PSK) signals and introduce space time constellations from generalized phase shift keying (GPSK) signals based on the complex and real orthogonal designs. The resulting space time constellations reallocate the energy for each transmitting antenna and feature good diversity products, consequently their performances are better than some of the existing comparable codes. Moreover since the maximum likelihood (ML) decoding of our proposed codes can be decomposed to one dimensional PSK signal demodulation, the ML decoding of our codes can be implemented in a very efficient way.

Unitary Space Time Constellation Analysis: An Upper Bound for the Diversity
Published • View PublicationBIB
The diversity product and the diversity sum are two very important parameters for a good-performing unitary space time constellation. A basic question is what the maximal diversity product (or sum) is. In this paper we are going to derive general upper bounds on the diversity sum and the diversity product for unitary constellations of any dimension $n$ and any size $m$ using packing techniques on the compact Lie group U(n).
