On the dimension of additive sets
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the relations between several notions of dimension for an additive set, some of which are well-known and some of which are more recent, appearing for instance in work of Schoen and Shkredov. We obtain bounds for the ratios between these dimensions by improving an inequality of Lev and Yuster, and we show that these bounds are asymptotically sharp, using in particular the existence of large dissociated subsets of $\{0,1\}^n\subset \mathbb{Z}^n$.

Growth in groups: ideas and perspectives
Published • View PublicationBIB
This is a survey of methods developed in the last few years to prove results on growth in non-commutative groups. These techniques have their roots in both additive combinatorics and group theory, as well as other fields. We discuss linear algebraic groups, with SL_2(Z/pZ) as the basic example, as well as permutation groups. The emphasis lies on the ideas behind the methods.

On growth in an abstract plane
Published • View PublicationBIB
There is a parallelism between growth in arithmetic combinatorics and growth in a geometric context. While, over $\mathbb{R}$ or $\mathbb{C}$, geometric statements on growth often have geometric proofs, what little is known over finite fields rests on arithmetic proofs. We discuss strategies for geometric proofs of growth over finite fields, and show that growth can be defined and proven in an abstract projective plane -- even one with weak axioms.

Growth and generation in SL_2(Z/pZ)
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that every subset of SL_2(Z/pZ) grows rapidly when it acts on itself by the group operation. It follows readily that, for every set of generators A of SL_2(Z/pZ), every element of SL_2(Z/pZ) can be expressed as a product of at most O((log p)^c) elements of the union of A and A^{-1}, where c and the implied constant are absolute.
