Dichromatic number and fractional chromatic number
Published • View PublicationBIB
The dichromatic number of a graph $G$ is the maximum integer $k$ such that there exists an orientation of the edges of $G$ such that for every partition of the vertices into fewer than $k$ parts, at least one of the parts must contain a directed cycle under this orientation. In 1979, Erdős and Neumann-Lara conjectured that if the dichromatic number of a graph is bounded, so is its chromatic number. We make the first significant progress on this conjecture by proving a fractional version of the conjecture. While our result uses stronger assumption about the fractional chromatic number, it also gives a much stronger conclusion: If the fractional chromatic number of a graph is at least $t$, then the fractional version of the dichromatic number of the graph is at least $\tfrac{1}{4}t/\log_2(2et^2)$. This bound is best possible up to a small constant factor. Several related results of independent interest are given.
The extremal function for disconnected minors
For a graph $H$ let $c(H)$ denote the supremum of $|E(G)|/|V(G)|$ taken over all non-null graphs $G$ not containing $H$ as a minor. We show that $$c(H) \leq \frac{|V(H)|+\mathrm{comp}(H)}{2}-1,$$ when $H$ is a union of cycles, verifying conjectures of Reed and Wood, and Harvey and Wood. We derive the above result from a theorem which allows us to find two vertex disjoint subgraphs with prescribed densities in a sufficiently dense graph, which might be of independent interest.
Large Supports are required for Well-Supported Nash Equilibria
We prove that for any constant $k$ and any $ε<1$, there exist bimatrix win-lose games for which every $ε$-WSNE requires supports of cardinality greater than $k$. To do this, we provide a graph-theoretic characterization of win-lose games that possess $ε$-WSNE with constant cardinality supports. We then apply a result in additive number theory of Haight to construct win-lose games that do not satisfy the requirements of the characterization. These constructions disprove graph theoretic conjectures of Daskalakis, Mehta and Papadimitriou, and Myers.
Interval minors of complete bipartite graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Interval minors of bipartite graphs were recently introduced by Jacob Fox in the study of Stanley-Wilf limits. We investigate the maximum number of edges in $K_{r,s}$-interval minor free bipartite graphs. We determine exact values when $r=2$ and describe the extremal graphs. For $r=3$, lower and upper bounds are given and the structure of $K_{3,s}$-interval minor free graphs is studied.

Beyond Ohba's Conjecture: A bound on the choice number of $k$-chromatic graphs with $n$ vertices
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $\text{ch}(G)$ denote the choice number of a graph $G$ (also called "list chromatic number" or "choosability" of $G$). Noel, Reed, and Wu proved the conjecture of Ohba that $\text{ch}(G)=χ(G)$ when $|V(G)|\le 2χ(G)+1$. We extend this to a general upper bound: $\text{ch}(G)\le \max\{χ(G),\lceil({|V(G)|+χ(G)-1})/{3}\rceil\}$. Our result is sharp for $|V(G)|\le 3χ(G)$ using Ohba's examples, and it improves the best-known upper bound for $\text{ch}(K_{4,\dots,4})$.

A Proof of a Conjecture of Ohba

We prove a conjecture of Ohba which says that every graph $G$ on at most $2χ(G)+1$ vertices satisfies $χ_\ell(G)=χ(G)$.

Complete Minors, Independent Sets, and Chordal Graphs

The Hadwiger number h(G) of a graph G is the maximum size of a complete minor of G. Hadwiger's Conjecture states that h(G) >= χ(G). Since χ(G) α(G) >= |V(G)|, Hadwiger's Conjecture implies that α(G) h(G) >= |V(G)|. We show that (2 α(G) - \lceil log_t(t α(G)/2) \rceil) h(G) \geq |V(G)| where t is approximately 6.83. For graphs with α(G) \geq 14, this improves on a recent result of Kawarabayashi and Song who showed (2 α(G) - 2) h(G) >= |V(G)| when α(G) >= 3.
Parity Edge-Coloring of Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
In a graph whose edges are colored, a parity walk is a walk that uses each color an even number of times. The parity edge chromatic number p(G) of a graph G is the least k so that there is a coloring of E(G) using k colors that does not contain a parity path. The strong parity edge chromatic number p'(G) of G is the least k so that there is a coloring of E(G) using k colors with the property that every parity walk is closed. Our main result is to determine p'(K_n). Specifically, if m is the least power of two that is as large as n, then p'(K_n) has value m - 1. As a corollary, we strengthen a special case of an old result of Daykin and Lovasz. Other results include determining p(G) and p'(G) whenever G is a path, cycle, or of the form K_{2,n}, and an upper bound on p'(G) for the case that G is a complete bipartite graph. We conclude with a sample of open problems.
