Hamiltonicity of Cartesian products of trees with odd paths
A $\{P_2,P_3\}$-factor in a graph $G$ is a factor of $G$ in which every component is a path on two or three vertices. Let $T\Box P_n$ be the Cartesian product of a tree $T$ and a path on $n$ vertices. Kao and Weng proved that $T\Box P_n$ is hamiltonian if $T$ has a path factor and $n$ is a sufficiently large even integer. In this article we prove that, for every odd $n$, there exists a tree $T$ of maximum degree 4 that has a $\{P_2,P_3\}$-factor such that $T\Box P_n$ is not hamiltonian, thereby refuting a conjecture by Kao and Weng.
Optimal $L(2,1)$-labeling of certain strong graph bundles cycles over cycles
An $L(2,1)$-labeling of a graph $G=(V,E)$ is a function $f$ from the vertex set $V(G)$ to the set of nonnegative integers such that the labels on adjacent vertices differ by at least two, and the labels on vertices at distance two differ by at least one. The span of $f$ is the difference between the largest and the smallest numbers of $f(V)$. The $λ$-number of $G$, denoted by $λ(G)$, is the minimum span over all $L(2,1)$-labelings of $G$. We prove that if $X= C_m\boxtimes^{σ_\ell} C_{n}$ is a direct graph bundle with fiber $C_{n}$ and base $C_m$, $n$ is a multiple of 11 and $\ell$ has a form of $\ell =[11k+(-1)^a 4m]\mod n$ or of $\ell =[11k+(-1)^a 3m]\mod n$, where $a\in \{1,2\}$ and $k\in \ZZ$, then $λ(X)=10$.
Optimal $L(d,1)$-labeling of certain direct graph bundles cycles over cycles and Cartesian graph bundles cycles over cycles
An $L(d,1)$-labeling of a graph $G$ is an assignment of nonnegative integers to the vertices such that adjacent vertices receive labels that differ by at least $d$ and those at a distance of two receive labels that differ by at least one, where $d\geq 1$. Let $λ^d_1 (G)$ denote the least $λ$ such that $G$ admits an $L(d,1)$-labeling using labels from $\{0,1,\ldots , λ\}$. We prove that $λ^d_1(X)\leq 2d+2$ for certain direct graph bundle $X= C_m\times^{σ_\ell} C_n$ and certain Cartesian graph bundle $X= C_m\Box^{σ_\ell} C_n$, where $σ_\ell$ is a cyclic $\ell$-shift, with equality if $1\leq d\leq 4$.
Hamiltonicity of Cartesian products of graphs
A path factor in a graph $G$ is a factor of $G$ in which every component is a path on at least two vertices. Let $T\Box P_n$ be the Cartesian product of a tree $T$ and a path on $n$ vertices. Kao and Weng proved that $T\Box P_n$ is hamiltonian if $T$ has a path factor, $n$ is an even integer and $n\geq 4Δ(T)-2$. They conjectured that for every $Δ\geq 3$ there exists a graph $G$ of maximum degree $Δ$ which has a path factor, such that for every even $n< 4Δ-2$ the product $G\Box P_n$ is not hamiltonian. In this article we prove this conjecture.
