Measured expanders
Published • View PublicationBIB
By measured graphs we mean graphs endowed with a measure on the set of vertices. In this context, we explore the relations between the appropriate Cheeger constant and Poincaré inequalities. We prove that the so-called Cheeger inequality holds in two cases: when the measure comes from a random walk, or when the measure has a bounded measure ratio. Moreover, we also prove that our measured (asymptotic) expanders are generalised expanders introduced by Tessera. Finally, we present some examples to demonstrate relations and differences between classical expander graphs and the measured ones. The current paper is motivated primarily by our previous work on the rigidity problem for Roe algebras.

On the structure of asymptotic expanders
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we use geometric tools to study the structure of asymptotic expanders and show that a sequence of asymptotic expanders always admits a "uniform exhaustion by expanders". It follows that asymptotic expanders cannot be coarsely embedded into any $L^p$-space, and that asymptotic expanders can be characterised in terms of their uniform Roe algebra. Moreover, we provide uncountably many new counterexamples to the coarse Baum--Connes conjecture. These appear to be the first counterexamples that are not directly constructed by means of spectral gaps. Finally, we show that vertex-transitive asymptotic expanders are actually expanders. In particular, this gives a $C^*$-algebraic characterisation of expanders for vertex-transitive graphs.

Quasi-local Algebras and Asymptotic Expanders
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we study the relation between the uniform Roe algebra and the uniform quasi-local algebra associated to a metric space of bounded geometry. In the process, we introduce a weakening of the notion of expanders, called asymptotic expanders. We show that being a sequence of asymptotic expanders is a coarse property under certain connectedness condition, and it implies non-uniformly local amenability. Moreover, we also analyse some $C^*$-algebraic properties of uniform quasi-local algebras. In particular, we show that a uniform quasi-local algebra is nuclear if and only if the underlying metric space has Property A.

Coarse median algebras: The intrinsic geometry of coarse median spaces and their intervals
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper establishes a new combinatorial framework for the study of coarse median spaces, bridging the worlds of asymptotic geometry, algebra and combinatorics. We introduce a simple and entirely algebraic notion of coarse median algebra which simultaneously generalises the concepts of bounded geometry coarse median spaces and classical discrete median algebras. We study the coarse median universe from the perspective of intervals, with a particular focus on cardinality as a proxy for distance. In particular we prove that the metric on a quasi-geodesic coarse median space of bounded geometry can be constructed up to quasi-isometry using only the coarse median operator. Finally we develop a concept of rank for coarse median algebras in terms of the geometry of intervals and show that the notion of finite rank coarse median algebra provides a natural higher dimensional analogue of Gromov's concept of $δ$-hyperbolicity.
