Multiplicative topological indices: Analytical properties and application to random networks
We make use of multiplicative degree-based topological indices $X_Π(G)$ to perform a detailed analytical and statistical study of random networks $G=(V(G),E(G))$. We consider two classes of indices: $X_Π(G) = \prod_{u \in V(G)} F_V(d_u)$ and $X_Π(G) = \prod_{uv \in E(G)} F_E(d_u,d_v)$, where $uv$ denotes the edge of $G$ connecting the vertices $u$ and $v$, $d_u$ is the degree of the vertex $u$, and $F_V(x)$ and $F_E(x,y)$ are functions of the vertex degrees. Specifically, we find analytical inequalities involving these multiplicative indices. Also, we apply $X_Π(G)$ on three models of random networks: Erdös-Rényi networks, random geometric graphs, and bipartite random networks. We show that $\left< \ln X_Π(G) \right>$, normalized to the order of the network, scale with the corresponding average degree; here $\left< \cdot \right>$ denotes the average over an ensemble of random networks.
On Opial-type inequalities via fractional calculus
Inequalities play an important role in pure and applied mathematics. In particular, Opial inequality plays a main role in the study of the existence and uniqueness of initial and boundary value problems for differential equations. It has several interesting generalizations. In this work we prove some new Opial-type inequalities, and we apply them to generalized Riemann-Liouville-type integral operators.
Mean Sombor index
We introduce a degree-based variable topological index inspired on the power (or generalized) mean. We name this new index as the mean Sombor index: $mSO_α(G) = \sum_{uv \in E(G)} \left[\left( d_u^α+d_v^α\right) /2 \right]^{1/α}$. Here, $uv$ denotes the edge of the graph $G$ connecting the vertices $u$ and $v$, $d_u$ is the degree of the vertex $u$, and $α\in \mathbb{R} \backslash \{0\}$. We also consider the limit cases $mSO_{α\to 0}(G)$ and $mSO_{α\to\pm\infty}(G)$. Indeed, for given values of $α$, the mean Sombor index is related to well-known topological indices such as the inverse sum indeg index, the reciprocal Randic index, the first Zagreb index, the Stolarsky--Puebla index and several Sombor indices. Moreover, through a quantitative structure property relationship (QSPR) analysis we show that $mSO_α(G)$ correlates well with several physicochemical properties of octane isomers. Some mathematical properties of mean Sombor indices as well as bounds and new relationships with known topological indices are also discussed.
Normalized Sombor indices as complexity measures of random graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We perform a detailed computational study of the recently introduced Sombor indices on random graphs. Specifically, we apply Sombor indices on three models of random graphs: Erdös-Rényi graphs, random geometric graphs, and bipartite random graphs. Within a statistical random matrix theory approach, we show that the average values of Sombor indices, normalized to the order of the graph, scale with the graph average degree. Moreover, we discuss the application of average Sombor indices as complexity measures of random graphs and, as a consequence, we show that selected normalized Sombor indices are highly correlated with the Shannon entropy of the eigenvectors of the graph adjacency matrix.
Analytical and computational study of the variable inverse sum deg index
A large number of graph invariants of the form $\sum_{uv \in E(G)} F(d_u,d_v)$ are studied in mathematical chemistry, where $uv$ denotes the edge of the graph $G$ connecting the vertices $u$ and $v$, and $d_u$ is the degree of the vertex $u$. Among them the variable inverse sum deg index $ISD_a$, with $F(d_u,d_v)=1/(d_u^a+d_v^a)$, was found to have applicative properties. The aim of this paper is to obtain new inequalities for the variable inverse sum deg index, and to characterize graphs extremal with respect to them. Some of these inequalities generalize and improve previous results for the inverse sum deg index. In addition, we computationally validate some of the obtained inequalities on ensembles of random graphs and show that the ratio $\left\langle ISD_a(G) \right\rangle/n$ ($n$ being the order of the graph) depends only on the average degree $\left\langle d \right\rangle$.
Analytical and computational properties of the variable symmetric division deg index
The aim of this work is to obtain new inequalities for the variable symmetric division deg index $SDD_α(G) = \sum_{uv \in E(G)} (d_u^α/d_v^α+d_v^α/d_u^α)$, and to characterize graphs extremal with respect to them. Here, $uv$ denotes the edge of the graph $G$ connecting the vertices $u$ and $v$, $d_u$ is the degree of the vertex $u$, and $α\in \mathbb{R}$. Some of these inequalities generalize and improve previous results for the symmetric division deg index. In addition, we computationally apply the $SDD_α(G)$ index on random graphs and show that the ratio $\left\langle SDD_α(G) \right\rangle/n$ ($n$ being the order of the graph) depends only on the average degree $\left\langle d \right\rangle$.
Upper and lower bounds for topological indices on unicyclic graphs
The aim of this paper is to obtain new inequalities for a large family of topological indices restricted to unicyclic graphs and to characterize the set of extremal unicyclic graphs with respect to them. This family includes variable first Zagreb, variable sum exdeg, multiplicative second Zagreb and Narumi-Katayama indices. Our main results provide upper and lower bounds for these topological indices on unicyclic graphs, fixing or not the maximum degree or the number of pendant vertices.
Several extremal problems on graphs involving the circumference, girth, and hyperbolicity constant
To compute the hyperbolicity constant is an almost intractable problem, thus it is natural to try to bound it in terms of some parameters of the graph. Let $\mathcal{G}(g,c,n)$ be the set of graphs $G$ with girth $g(G)=g$, circumference $c(G)=c$, and $n$ vertices; and let $\mathcal{H}(g,c,m)$ be the set of graphs with girth $g$, circumference $c$, and $m$ edges. In this work, we study the four following extremal problems on graphs: $A(g,c,n)=\min\{δ(G)\,|\; G \in \mathcal{G}(g,c,n) \}$, $B(g,c,n)=\max\{δ(G)\,|\; G \in \mathcal{G}(g,c,n) \}$, $α(g,c,m)=\min\{δ(G)\,|\; \in \mathcal{H}(g,c,m) \}$ and $β(g,c,m)=\max\{δ(G)\,|\; G \in \mathcal{H}(g,c,m) \}$. In particular, we obtain bounds for $A(g,c,n)$ and $α(g,c,m)$, and we compute the precise value of $B(g,c,n)$ and $β(g,c,m)$ for all values of $g$, $c$, $n$ and $m$.
Computational and analytical studies of the Randić index in Erdös-Rényi models
In this work we perform computational and analytical studies of the Randić index $R(G)$ in Erdös-Rényi models $G(n,p)$ characterized by $n$ vertices connected independently with probability $p \in (0,1)$. First, from a detailed scaling analysis, we show that $\left\langle \overline{R}(G) \right\rangle = \left\langle R(G)\right\rangle/(n/2)$ scales with the product $ξ\approx np$, so we can define three regimes: a regime of mostly isolated vertices when $ξ< 0.01$ ($R(G)\approx 0$), a transition regime for $0.01 < ξ< 10$ (where $0<R(G)< n/2$), and a regime of almost complete graphs for $ξ> 10$ ($R(G)\approx n/2$). Then, motivated by the scaling of $\left\langle \overline{R}(G) \right\rangle$, we analytically (i) obtain new relations connecting $R(G)$ with other topological indices and characterize graphs which are extremal with respect to the relations obtained and (ii) apply these results in order to obtain inequalities on $R(G)$ for graphs in Erdös-Rényi models.
New Lower Bounds for the First Variable Zagreb Index
The aim of this paper is to obtain new sharp inequalities for a large family of topological indices, including the first variable Zagreb index $M_1^α$, and to characterize the set of extremal graphs with respect to them. Our main results provide lower bounds on this family of topological indices involving just the minimum and the maximum degree of the graph. These inequalities are new even for the first Zagreb, the inverse and the forgotten indices.
New lower bounds for the Geometric-Arithmetic index
The concept of geometric-arithmetic index was introduced in the chemical graph theory recently, but it has shown to be useful. The aim of this paper is to obtain new inequalities involving the geometric-arithmetic index $GA_1$ and characterize graphs extremal with respect to them. Our main results provide lower bounds $GA_1(G)$ involving just the minimum and the maximum degree of the graph $G$.
Alliance polynomial of regular graphs
Published in Discrete Appl. Math. 225 (2017) • View PublicationBIB
The alliance polynomial of a graph $G$ with order $n$ and maximum degree $Δ$ is the polynomial $A(G; x) = \sum_{k=-Δ}^Δ A_{k}(G) \, x^{n+k}$, where $A_{k}(G)$ is the number of exact defensive $k$-alliances in $G$. We obtain some properties of $A(G; x)$ and its coefficients for regular graphs. In particular, we characterize the degree of regular graphs by the number of non-zero coefficients of their alliance polynomial. Besides, we prove that the family of alliance polynomials of $Δ$-regular graphs with small degree is a very special one, since it does not contain alliance polynomials of graphs which are not $Δ$-regular. By using this last result and direct computation we find that the alliance polynomial determines uniquely each cubic graph of order less than or equal to $10$.
Bounds on Gromov Hyperbolicity Constant
If $X$ is a geodesic metric space and $x_{1},x_{2},x_{3} \in X$, a geodesic triangle $T=\{x_{1},x_{2},x_{3}\}$ is the union of the three geodesics $[x_{1}x_{2}]$, $[x_{2}x_{3}]$ and $[x_{3}x_{1}]$ in $X$. The space $X$ is $δ$-hyperbolic in the Gromov sense if any side of $T$ is contained in a $δ$-neighborhood of the union of the two other sides, for every geodesic triangle $T$ in $X$. If $X$ is hyperbolic, we denote by $δ(X)$ the sharp hyperbolicity constant of $X$, i.e. $δ(X) =\inf \{ δ\geq 0:{0.3cm}$ X ${0.2cm}$ $\text{is} {0.2cm} δ\text{-hyperbolic} \}.$ To compute the hyperbolicity constant is a very hard problem. Then it is natural to try to bound the hyperbolycity constant in terms of some parameters of the graph. Denote by $\mathcal{G}(n,m)$ the set of graphs $G$ with $n$ vertices and $m$ edges, and such that every edge has length $1$. In this work we estimate $A(n,m):=\min\{δ(G)\mid G \in \mathcal{G}(n,m) \}$ and $B(n,m):=\max\{δ(G)\mid G \in \mathcal{G}(n,m) \}$. In particular, we obtain good bounds for $B(n,m)$, and we compute the precise value of $A(n,m)$ for all values of $n$ and $m$. Besides, we apply these results to random graphs.
Hyperbolicity in the corona and join of graphs

If X is a geodesic metric space and $x_1,x_2,x_3\in X$, a {\it geodesic triangle} $T=\{x_1,x_2,x_3\}$ is the union of the three geodesics $[x_1x_2]$, $[x_2x_3]$ and $[x_3x_1]$ in $X$. The space $X$ is $δ$-\emph{hyperbolic} $($in the Gromov sense$)$ if any side of $T$ is contained in a $δ$-neighborhood of the union of the two other sides, for every geodesic triangle $T$ in $X$. If $X$ is hyperbolic, we denote by $δ(X)$ the sharp hyperbolicity constant of $X$, i.e. $δ(X)=\inf\{δ\ge 0: \, X \, \text{ is $δ$-hyperbolic}\,\}\,.$ Some previous works characterize the hyperbolic product graphs (for the Cartesian product, strong product and lexicographic product) in terms of properties of the factor graphs. In this paper we characterize the hyperbolic product graphs for graph join $G_1\uplus G_2$ and the corona $G_1\diamond G_2$: $G_1\uplus G_2$ is always hyperbolic, and $G_1\diamond G_2$ is hyperbolic if and only if $G_1$ is hyperbolic. Furthermore, we obtain simple formulae for the hyperbolicity constant of the graph join $G_1\uplus G_2$ and the corona $G_1\diamond G_2$.
Computing the alliance polynomial of a graph

The alliance polynomial of a graph $Γ$ with order $n$ and maximum degree $δ_1$ is the polynomial $A(Γ; x) = \sum_{k=-δ_1}^{δ_1} A_{k}(Γ) \, x^{n+k}$, where $A_{k}(Γ)$ is the number of exact defensive $k$-alliances in $Γ$. We provide an algorithm for computing the alliance polynomial. Furthermore, we obtain some properties of $A(Γ; x)$ and its coefficients. In particular, we prove that the path, cycle, complete and star graphs are characterized by their alliance polynomials. We also show that the alliance polynomial characterizes many graphs that are not distinguished by other usual polynomials of graphs.

We prove also the upper bound $δ(\mathcal L(G)) \le 5 δ(G)+ 3 l_{max}$, where $l_{max}$ is the supremum of the lengths of the edges of $G$. Furthermore, if every edge of $G$ has length $k$, we obtain $δ(G) \le δ(\mathcal L(G)) \le 5 δ(G)+ 5k/2$.
