On the Homotopy Type of the Polyhedral Join over the Independence Complex of a Forest
We consider a certain class of simplicial complexes which includes the independence complexes of forests. We show that if a simplicial complex $K$ belongs to this class, then the polyhedral join $\mathcal{Z}^*_{K}(\underline{X}, \emptyset)$ is homotopy equivalent to a wedge sum of CW complexes of the form $Σ^r X_{i_1} * X_{i_2} * \cdots * X_{i_k}$, where $\underline{X}$ is a family $\{X_i\}_{i \in V(K)}$ of CW complexes and $Σ$ denotes the unreduced suspension. This result is applied to study the homotopy type of the independence complex of the lexicographic product $G[H]$ of a graph $H$ over a forest $G$. We denote by $L_m$ a tree on $m$ vertices with no branches. We show that the geometric realization of the independence complex of $L_m [H]$ is homotopy equivalent to a wedge sum of spheres if $m \neq 2,3$ and the geometric realization of the independence complex of $H$ is homotopy equivalent to a wedge sum of same dimensional spheres.

We investigate the shellability of the polyhedral join $\mathcal{Z}^*_M (K, L)$ of simplicial complexes $K, M$ and a subcomplex $L \subset K$. We give sufficient conditions and necessary conditions on $(K, L)$ for $\mathcal{Z}^*_M (K, L)$ being shellable. In particular, we show that for some pairs $(K, L)$, $\mathcal{Z}^*_M (K, L)$ becomes shellable regardless of whether $M$ is shellable or not. Polyhedral joins can be applied to graph theory as the independence complex of a certain generalized version of lexicographic products of graphs which we define in this paper. The graph obtained from two graphs $G, H$ by attaching one copy of $H$ to each vertex of $G$ is a special case of this generalized lexicographic product and we give a result on the shellability of the independence complex of this graph by applying the above results.
Independence Complex of the Lexicographic Product of a Forest
We study the independence complex of the lexicographic product $G[H]$ of a forest $G$ and a graph $H$. We prove that for a forest $G$ which is not dominated by a single vertex, if the independence complex of $H$ is homotopy equivalent to a wedge sum of spheres, then so is the independence complex of $G[H]$. We offer two examples of explicit calculations. As the first example, we determine the homotopy type of the independence complex of $L_m [H]$, where $L_m$ is the tree on $m$ vertices with no branches, for any positive integer $m$ when the independence complex of $H$ is homotopy equivalent to a wedge sum of $n$ copies of $d$-dimensional sphere. As the second one, for a forest $G$ and a complete graph $K$, we describe the homological connectivity of the independence complex of $G[K]$ by the independent domination number of $G$.
Simple homotopy types of independence complexes of graphs involving grid graphs
We show that if a graph $G$ involves a certain square grid graph as a full subgraph, then a certain operation on it yields a simplicial suspension of the independence complex of $G$. This generalizes a result of Csorba. As a corollary, we determine the simple homotopy types of the independence complexes of some grid graphs.
