Reciprocity in directed networks
Published in Phys. A. 447: 71-84 (2016) • View PublicationBIB
Reciprocity is an important characteristic of directed networks and has been widely used in the modeling of World Wide Web, email, social, and other complex networks. In this paper, we take a statistical physics point of view and study the limiting entropy and free energy densities from the microcanonical ensemble, the canonical ensemble, and the grand canonical ensemble whose sufficient statistics are given by edge and reciprocal densities. The sparse case is also studied for the grand canonical ensemble. Extensions to more general reciprocal models including reciprocal triangle and star densities will likewise be discussed.

Asymptotics for Sparse Exponential Random Graph Models
Published in Braz. J. Probab. Stat. 31, 394-412 (2017) • View PublicationBIB
We study the asymptotics for sparse exponential random graph models where the parameters may depend on the number of vertices of the graph. We obtain exact estimates for the mean and variance of the limiting probability distribution and the limiting log partition function of the edge-(single)-star model. They are in sharp contrast to the corresponding asymptotics in dense exponential random graph models. Similar analysis is done for directed sparse exponential random graph models parametrized by edges and multiple outward stars.

Asymptotic Structure of Constrained Exponential Random Graph Models
Published in Journal of Statistical Physics 2017, Volume 166, Issue 6, 1464-1482 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we study exponential random graph models subject to certain constraints. We obtain some general results about the asymptotic structure of the model. We show that there exists non-trivial regions in the phase plane where the asymptotic structure is uniform and there also exists non-trivial regions in the phase plane where the asymptotic structure is non-uniform. We will get more refined results for the star model and in particular the two-star model for which a sharp transition from uniform to non-uniform structure, a stationary point and phase transitions will be obtained.

Asymptotic structure and singularities in constrained directed graphs
Published in Stoch. Proc. Appl. 125 (2015) 4154-4177 • View PublicationBIB
We study the asymptotics of large directed graphs, constrained to have certain densities of edges and/or outward $p$-stars. Our models are close cousins of exponential random graph models (ERGMs), in which edges and certain other subgraph densities are controlled by parameters. The idea of directly constraining edge and other subgraph densities comes from Radin and Sadun. Such modeling circumvents a phenomenon first made precise by Chatterjee and Diaconis: that in ERGMs it is often impossible to independently constrain edge and other subgraph densities. In all our models, we find that large graphs have either uniform or bipodal structure. When edge density (resp. $p$-star density) is fixed and $p$-star density (resp. edge density) is controlled by a parameter, we find phase transitions corresponding to a change from uniform to bipodal structure. When both edge and $p$-star density are fixed, we find only bipodal structures and no phase transition.

On the phase transition curve in a directed exponential random graph model
Published in Adv. Appl. Prob. 50, 272--301, (2018) • View PublicationBIB
We consider a family of directed exponential random graph models parametrized by edges and outward stars. Much of the important statistical content of such models is given by the normalization constant of the models, and in particular, an appropriately scaled limit of the normalization, which is called the free energy. We derive precise asymptotics for the normalization constant for finite graphs. We use this to derive a formula for the free energy. The limit is analytic everywhere except along a curve corresponding to a first order phase transition. We examine unusual behavior of the model along the phase transition curve.
