On Periodicity and Complexity of Generalized Pseudostandard Words
Generalized pseudostandard words have been introduced by de Luca and De Luca in 2006. In comparison to the palindromic and pseudopalindromic closure, only little is known about the generalized pseudopalindromic closure and the associated generalized pseudostandard words. We present two new results concerning these words. The first one is a necessary and sufficient condition for their periodicity. The second result is a counterexample to Conjecture 43 from the paper: A. B. Masse, G.Paquin, H. Tremblay, and L. Vuillon, On Generalized Pseudostandard Words over Binary Alphabet (Journal of Int. Sequences, 16:Article 13.2.11, 2013) that estimated the complexity of binary generalized pseudostandard words as C(n) being less than or equal to 4n for all sufficiently large n.
Aperiodic pseudorandom number generators based on infinite words
Published in Theoret. Comput. Sci. 647 (2016), 85 -- 100 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we study how certain families of aperiodic infinite words can be used to produce aperiodic pseudorandom number generators (PRNGs) with good statistical behavior. We introduce the \emph{well distributed occurrences} (WELLDOC) combinatorial property for infinite words, which guarantees absence of the lattice structure defect in related pseudorandom number generators. An infinite word $u$ on a $d$-ary alphabet has the WELLDOC property if, for each factor $w$ of $u$, positive integer $m$, and vector $\mathbf v\in\mathbb Z_{m}^{d}$, there is an occurrence of $w$ such that the Parikh vector of the prefix of $u$ preceding such occurrence is congruent to $\mathbf v$ modulo $m$. (The Parikh vector of a finite word $v$ over an alphabet $\mathcal A$ has its $i$-th component equal to the number of occurrences of the $i$-th letter of $\mathcal A$ in $v$.) We prove that Sturmian words, and more generally Arnoux-Rauzy words and some morphic images of them, have the WELLDOC property. Using the TestU01 and PractRand statistical tests, we moreover show that not only the lattice structure is absent, but also other important properties of PRNGs are improved when linear congruential generators are combined using infinite words having the WELLDOC property.

Continued Fractions of Quadratic Numbers
Published in Acta Polytechnica, 53(4) (2013), 322-328 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we will first summarize known results concerning continued fractions. Then we will limit our consideration to continued fractions of quadratic numbers. The second author described periods and sometimes precise form of continued fractions of $\sqrt{N}$, where $N$ is a natural number. In cases where we were able to find such results in literature, we recall the original authors, however many results seem to be new.
Proof of Brlek-Reutenauer conjecture
Published in Theoretical Computer Science 475 (2013), 120-125 • View PublicationBIB
Brlek and Reutenauer conjectured that any infinite word u with language closed under reversal satisfies the equality 2D(u) = \sum_{n=0}^{\infty}T_u(n) in which D(u) denotes the defect of u and T_u(n) denotes C_u(n+1)-C_u(n) +2 - P_U(n+1) - P_u(n), where C_u and P_u are the factor and palindromic complexity of u, respectively. This conjecture was verified for periodic words by Brlek and Reutenauer themselves. Using their results for periodic words, we have recently proved the conjecture for uniformly recurrent words. In the present article we prove the conjecture in its general version by a new method without exploiting the result for periodic words.

Factor frequencies in generalized Thue-Morse words
Published in Kybernetika 48(3) (2012), 371-385 • Search Publication
We describe factor frequencies of the generalized Thue-Morse word t_{b,m} defined for integers b greater than 1, m greater than 0 as the fixed point starting in 0 of the morphism φ_{b,m} given by φ_{b,m}(k)=k(k+1)...(k+b-1), where k = 0,1,..., m-1 and where the letters are expressed modulo m. We use the result of A. Frid, On the frequency of factors in a D0L word, Journal of Automata, Languages and Combinatorics 3 (1998), 29-41 and the study of generalized Thue-Morse words by S. Starosta, Generalized Thue-Morse words and palindromic richness, arXiv:1104.2476v2 [math.CO].

Factor frequencies in languages invariant under more symmetries
Published in Integers - Electronic Journal of Combinatorial Number Theory 12 (2012), A36 • Search Publication
The number of frequencies of factors of length $n+1$ in a recurrent aperiodic infinite word does not exceed $3Δ\C(n)$, where $Δ\C (n)$ is the first difference of factor complexity, as shown by Boshernitzan. Pelantová together with the author derived a better upper bound for infinite words whose language is closed under reversal. In this paper, we further diminish the upper bound for uniformly recurrent infinite words whose language is invariant under all elements of a finite group of symmetries and we prove the optimality of the obtained upper bound.
On Brlek-Reutenauer conjecture

Brlek and Reutenauer conjectured that any infinite word u with language closed under reversal satisfies the equality 2D(u)=\sum_{n=0}^{\infty} T(n) in which D(u) denotes the defect of u and T(n) denotes C(n+1)-C(n)+2-P(n+1)-P(n), where C and P are the factor and palindromic complexity of u, respectively. Brlek and Reutenauer verified their conjecture for periodic infinite words. We prove the conjecture for uniformly recurrent words. Moreover, we summarize results and some open problems related to defect, which may be useful for the proof of Brlek-Reutenauer Conjecture in full generality.

Infinite Words with Finite Defect
Published in Advances in Applied Mathematics, 2011 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we provide a new characterization of uniformly recurrent words with finite defect based on a relation between the palindromic and factor complexity. Furthermore, we introduce a class of morphisms P_ret closed under composition and we show that a uniformly recurrent word with finite defect is an image of a rich (also called full) word under a morphism of class P_ret. This class is closely related to the well-known class P defined by Hof, Knill, and Simon; every morphism from P_ret is conjugate to a morphism of class P.
Sturmian Jungle (or Garden?) on Multiliteral Alphabets
Published in RAIRO - Theor. Inf. Appl. 44 (2010), 443-470 • Search Publication
The properties characterizing Sturmian words are considered for words on multiliteral alphabets. We summarize various generalizations of Sturmian words to multiliteral alphabets and enlarge the list of known relationships among these generalizations. We also collect many examples of infinite words to illustrate differences in the generalized definitions of Sturmian words.
Palindromes in infinite ternary words
Published in RAIRO - Theor. Inform. Appl. 43 (2009), 687-702 • Search Publication
We study infinite words u over an alphabet A satisfying the property P : P(n)+ P(n+1) = 1+ #A for any n in N, where P(n) denotes the number of palindromic factors of length n occurring in the language of u. We study also infinite words satisfying a stronger property PE: every palindrome of u has exactly one palindromic extension in u. For binary words, the properties P and PE coincide and these properties characterize Sturmian words, i.e., words with the complexity C(n)=n+1 for any n in N. In this paper, we focus on ternary infinite words with the language closed under reversal. For such words u, we prove that if C(n)=2n+1 for any n in N, then u satisfies the property P and moreover u is rich in palindromes. Also a sufficient condition for the property PE is given. We construct a word demonstrating that P on a ternary alphabet does not imply PE.
Sequences with constant number of return words
An infinite word has the property $R_m$ if every factor has exactly $m$ return words. Vuillon showed that $R_2$ characterizes Sturmian words. We prove that a word satisfies $R_m$ if its complexity function is $(m-1)n+1$ and if it contains no weak bispecial factor. These conditions are necessary for $m=3$, whereas for $m=4$ the complexity function need not be $3n+1$. New examples of words satisfying $R_m$ are given by words related to digital expansions in real bases.
