A study of general Martens-special chains of cycles
For a general Martens-special chain of cycles $Γ$ of type $k$ we prove that the gonality is equal to $k+2$. Although $\dim (W^1_{k+2} (Γ))=k$ we prove that $w^1_{k+2}(Γ)=0$. We also compute the gonality sequence of $Γ$ and we prove it is divisorial complete. We prove that a general Martens-special discrete chain of cycles $G$ of type $k$ has the same gonality sequence.
The relation between the gonality and the Clifford index of a chain of cycles
For a chain of cycles $Γ$ we prove Cliff($Γ$)=gon($Γ$)-2.

Let $Γ$ be a chain of cycles of genus $g$. Let $d$,$r$ be integers with $1 \leq r \leq g-2$ and $2r\leq d \leq g-3+r$. Then $w^r_d(Γ)=d-2r$ implies $Γ$ is hyperelliptic. For each $g \geq 2r+3$ there exist non-hyperelliptic chains of cycles satisfying $w^r_{g-2+r}(Γ)=g-2-r$. In the case of algebraic curves such equality implies the curve is hyperelliptic. In particular we obtain the existence of chains of cycles $Γ$ such that $w^r_{g-2+r}(Γ) \neq w^1_{g-r}(Γ)$ in case $r \geq 2$. In the case of algebraic curves such numbers are equal because of the Riemann-Roch Theorem.

For all integers $g \geq 6$ we prove the existence of a metric graph $G$ with $w^1_4=1$ such that $G$ has Clifford index 2 and there is no tropical modification $G'$ of $G$ such that there exists a finite harmonic morphism of degree 2 from $G'$ to a metric graph of genus 1. Those examples show that dimension theorems on the space classifying special linear systems for curves do not all of them have immediate translation to the theory of divisors on metric graphs.

Let $Γ$ be a metric graph having a linear system $g^r_{2r}$ for some $2 \leq r \leq g-2$ then $Γ$ has a linear system $g^1_2$. This is similar to the well-known Clifford's Theorem from the theory of linear systems on smooth projective curves.

A degeneration of curves gives rise to an interesting relation between linear systems on curves and on graphs. In this paper, we consider the case of linear pencils and as an application, we obtain some results on pencils on real curves.
