We consider a long-range percolation graph on $\mathbb Z^d$ where, in addition to the nearest-neighbor edges of $\mathbb Z^d$, distinct $x,y\in\mathbb Z^d$ are connected by an edge independently with probability asymptotic to $β|x-y|^{-s}$, for $s\in(d,2d)$, $β>0$ and $|\cdot|$ a norm on $\mathbb R^d$. We first show that, for all but a countably many $β>0$, the graph-theoretical (a.k.a. chemical) distance between typical vertices at $|\cdot|$-distance $r$ is, with high probability as $r\to\infty$, asymptotic to $φ_β(r)(\log r)^Δ$, where $Δ^{-1}:=\log_2(2d/s)$ and $φ_β$ is a positive, bounded and continuous function subject to $φ_β(r^γ)=φ_β(r)$ for $γ:=s/(2d)$. The proof parallels that in a continuum version of the model where a similar scaling was shown earlier by the first author and J. Lin. This work also conjectured that $φ_β$ is constant which we show to be false by proving that $(\logβ)^Δφ_β$ tends, as $β\to\infty$, to a non-constant limit which is independent of the specifics of the model. The proof reveals arithmetic rigidity of the shortest paths that maintain a hierarchical (dyadic) structure all the way to unit scales.

We consider instances of long-range percolation on $\mathbb Z^d$ and $\mathbb R^d$, where points at distance $r$ get connected by an edge with probability proportional to $r^{-s}$, for $s\in (d,2d)$, and study the asymptotic of the graph-theoretical (a.k.a. chemical) distance $D(x,y)$ between $x$ and $y$ in the limit as $|x-y|\to\infty$. For the model on $\mathbb Z^d$ we show that, in probability as $|x|\to\infty$, the distance $D(0,x)$ is squeezed between two positive multiples of $(\log r)^Δ$, where $Δ:=1/\log_2(1/γ)$ for $γ:=s/(2d)$. For the model on $\mathbb R^d$ we show that $D(0,xr)$ is, in probability as $r\to\infty$ for any nonzero $x\in\mathbb R^d$, asymptotic to $φ(r)(\log r)^Δ$ for $φ$ a positive, continuous (deterministic) function obeying $φ(r^γ)=φ(r)$ for all $r>1$. The proof of the asymptotic scaling is based on a subadditive argument along a continuum of doubly-exponential sequences of scales. The results strengthen considerably the conclusions obtained earlier by the first author. Still, significant open questions remain.

We consider Gibbs distributions on permutations of a locally finite infinite set $X\subset\mathbb{R}$, where a permutation $σ$ of $X$ is assigned (formal) energy $\sum_{x\in X}V(σ(x)-x)$. This is motivated by Feynman's path representation of the quantum Bose gas; the choice $X:=\mathbb{Z}$ and $V(x):=αx^2$ is of principal interest. Under suitable regularity conditions on the set $X$ and the potential $V$, we establish existence and a full classification of the infinite-volume Gibbs measures for this problem, including a result on the number of infinite cycles of typical permutations. Unlike earlier results, our conclusions are not limited to small densities and/or high temperatures.

We present a large-deviations/thermodynamic approach to the classic problem of percolation on the complete graph. Specifically, we determine the large-deviation rate function for the probability that the giant component occupies a fixed fraction of the graph while all other components are ``small.'' One consequence is an immediate derivation of the ``cavity'' formula for the fraction of vertices in the giant component. As a by-product of our analysis we compute the large-deviation rate functions for the probability of the event that the random graph is connected, the event that it contains no cycles and the event that it contains only ``small'' components.

We study the asymptotic growth of the diameter of a graph obtained by adding sparse "long" edges to a square box in $\Z^d$. We focus on the cases when an edge between $x$ and $y$ is added with probability decaying with the Euclidean distance as $|x-y|^{-s+o(1)}$ when $|x-y|\to\infty$. For $s\in(d,2d)$ we show that the graph diameter for the graph reduced to a box of side $L$ scales like $(\log L)^{Δ+o(1)}$ where $Δ^{-1}:=\log_2(2d/s)$. In particular, the diameter grows about as fast as the typical graph distance between two vertices at distance $L$. We also show that a ball of radius $r$ in the intrinsic metric on the (infinite) graph will roughly coincide with a ball of radius $\exp\{r^{1/Δ+o(1)}\}$ in the Euclidean metric.
