Total Domishold Graphs: a Generalization of Threshold Graphs, with Connections to Threshold Hypergraphs
Published in Discrete Applied Mathematics 179 (2014) 1-12 • View PublicationBIB
A total dominating set in a graph is a set of vertices such that every vertex of the graph has a neighbor in the set. We introduce and study graphs that admit non-negative real weights associated to their vertices such that a set of vertices is a total dominating set if and only if the sum of the corresponding weights exceeds a certain threshold. We show that these graphs, which we call total domishold graphs, form a non-hereditary class of graphs properly containing the classes of threshold graphs and the complements of domishold graphs, and are closely related to threshold Boolean functions and threshold hypergraphs. We present a polynomial time recognition algorithm of total domishold graphs, and characterize graphs in which the above property holds in a hereditary sense. Our characterization is obtained by studying a new family of hypergraphs, defined similarly as the Sperner hypergraphs, which may be of independent interest.

On CIS Circulants
Published in Discrete Mathematics 318 (2014) 78--95 • View PublicationBIB
A circulant is a Cayley graph over a cyclic group. A well-covered graph is a graph in which all maximal stable sets are of the same size, or in other words, they are all maximum. A CIS graph is a graph in which every maximal stable set and every maximal clique intersect. It is not difficult to show that a circulant G is a CIS graph if and only if G and its complement are both well-covered and the product of the independence and the clique numbers of G is equal to the number of vertices. It is also easy to demonstrate that both families, the circulants and the CIS graphs, are closed with respect to the operations of taking the complement and lexicographic product. We study the structure of the CIS circulants. It is well-known that all P_4-free graphs are CIS. In this paper, in addition to the simple family of the P_4-free circulants, we construct a non-trivial sparse but infinite family of CIS circulants. We are not aware of any CIS circulant that could not be obtained from graphs in this family by the operations of taking the complement and lexicographic product.

Group Irregularity Strength of Connected Graphs
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Optimization, Vol. 30/1 (2015), 1--17 • View PublicationBIB
We investigate the group irregularity strength ($s_g(G)$) of graphs, i.e. the smallest value of $s$ such that taking any Abelian group $\gr$ of order $s$, there exists a function $f:E(G)\rightarrow \gr$ such that the sums of edge labels at every vertex are distinct. We prove that for any connected graph $G$ of order at least 3, $s_g(G)=n$ if $n\neq 4k+2$ and $s_g(G)\leq n+1$ otherwise, except the case of some infinite family of stars.

On the approximability and exact algorithms for vector domination and related problems in graphs
Published in Discrete Applied Mathematics 2012 (online) • View PublicationBIB
We consider two graph optimization problems called vector domination and total vector domination. In vector domination one seeks a small subset S of vertices of a graph such that any vertex outside S has a prescribed number of neighbors in S. In total vector domination, the requirement is extended to all vertices of the graph. We prove that these problems (and several variants thereof) cannot be approximated to within a factor of clnn, where c is a suitable constant and n is the number of the vertices, unless P = NP. We also show that two natural greedy strategies have approximation factors ln D+O(1), where D is the maximum degree of the input graph. We also provide exact polynomial time algorithms for several classes of graphs. Our results extend, improve, and unify several results previously known in the literature.
A note on dilation coefficient, plane-width, and resolution coefficient of graphs
In this note we study and compare three graph invariants related to the 'compactness' of graph drawing in the plane: the dilation coefficient, defined as the smallest possible quotient between the longest and the shortest edge length; the plane-width, which is the smallest possible quotient between the largest distance between any two points and the shortest length of an edge; and the resolution coefficient, the smallest possible quotient between the longest edge length and the smallest distance between any two points. These three invariants coincide for complete graphs. We show that graphs with large dilation coefficient or plane-width have a vertex with large valence but there exist cubic graphs with arbitrarily large resolution coefficient. Surprisingly enough, the one-dimensional analogues of these three invariants allow us to revisit the three well known graph parameters: the circular chromatic number, the chromatic number, and the bandwidth. We also examine the connection between bounded resolution coefficient and minor-closed graph classes.
