Concentration estimates for algebraic intersections
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present an approach over arbitrary fields to bound the degree of intersection of families of varieties in terms of how these concentrate on algebraic sets of smaller codimension. This provides in particular a substantial extension of the method of degree-reduction that enables it to deal efficiently with higher-dimensional problems and also with high-degree varieties. We obtain sharp bounds that are new even in the case of lines in $\mathbb{R}^n$ and show that besides doubly-ruled varieties, only a certain rare family of varieties can be relevant for the study of incidence questions.

The polynomial method over varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
We establish sharp estimates that adapt the polynomial method to arbitrary varieties. These include a partitioning theorem, estimates on polynomials vanishing on fixed sets and bounds for the number of connected components of real algebraic varieties. As a first application, we provide a general incidence estimate that is tight in its dependence on the size, degree and dimension of the varieties involved.

The algebraicity of ill-distributed sets

We show that every set S in [N]^d occupying less than p^t residue classes for some real number t < d and every prime p, must essentially lie in the solution set of a polynomial equation of degree at most (log N)^C, for some constant C depending only on t and d. This provides the first structural result for arbitrary t < d and S.
