A multidimensional Szemeredi theorem for Hardy sequences of different growth
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove a variant of the multidimensional polynomial Szemerédi theorem of Bergelson and Leibman where one replaces polynomial sequences with other sparse sequences defined by functions that belong to some Hardy field and satisfy certain growth conditions. We do this by studying the limiting behavior of the corresponding multiple ergodic averages and obtaining a simple limit formula. A consequence of this formula in topological dynamics shows denseness of certain orbits when the iterates are restricted to suitably chosen sparse subsequences. Another consequence is that every syndetic set of integers contains certain non-shift invariant patterns, and every finite coloring of $\N$, with each color class a syndetic set, contains certain polychromatic patterns, results very particular to our non-polynomial setup.

Some open problems on multiple ergodic averages
We survey some recent developments and give a list of open problems regarding multiple recurrence and convergence phenomena of $\mathbb{Z}^d$ actions in ergodic theory and related applications in combinatorics and number theory.

The polynomial multidimensional Szemerédi Theorem along shifted primes

If $\vf_1, ... \vf_m\colon\Z\to\Z^\ell$ are polynomials with zero constant terms and $E\subset\Z^\ell$ has positive upper Banach density, then we show that the set $E\cap (E-\vf_1(p-1))\cap\...\cap (E-\vf_m(p-1))$ is nonempty for some prime $p$. We also prove mean convergence for the associated averages along the prime numbers, conditional to analogous convergence results along the full integers. This generalizes earlier results of the authors, of Wooley and Ziegler, and of Bergelson, Leibman and Ziegler.

Ergodic averages of commuting transformations with distinct degree polynomial iterates
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove mean convergence, as $N\to\infty$, for the multiple ergodic averages $\frac{1}{N}\sum_{n=1}^N f_1(T_1^{p_1(n)}x)... f_\ell(T_\ell^{p_\ell(n)}x)$, where $p_1,...,p_\ell$ are integer polynomials with distinct degrees, and $T_1,...,T_\ell$ are commuting, invertible measure preserving transformations, acting on the same probability space. This establishes several cases of a conjecture of Bergelson and Leibman, that complement the case of linear polynomials, recently established by Tao. Furthermore, we show that, unlike the case of linear polynomials, for polynomials of distinct degrees, the corresponding characteristic factors are mixtures of inverse limits of nilsystems. We use this particular structure, together with some equidistribution results on nilmanifolds, to give an application to multiple recurrence and a corresponding one to combinatorics.

Multiple recurrence and convergence for Hardy sequences of polynomial growth
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the limiting behavior of multiple ergodic averages involving sequences of integers that satisfy some regularity conditions and have polynomial growth. We show that for "typical" choices of Hardy field functions $a(t)$ with polynomial growth, the averages $\frac{1}{N}\sum_{n=1}^N f_1(T^{[a(n)]}x)\cdot...\cdot f_\ell(T^{\ell [a(n)]}x)$ converge in the mean and we determine their limit. For example, this is the case if $a(t)=t^{3/2}, t\log{t},$ or $t^2+(\log{t})^2$. Furthermore, if ${a_1(t),...,a_\ell(t)}$ is a "typical" family of logarithmico-exponential functions of polynomial growth, then for every ergodic system, the averages $\frac{1}{N}\sum_{n=1}^N f_1(T^{[a_1(n)]}x)\cdot...\cdot f_\ell(T^{[a_\ell(n)]}x)$ converge in the mean to the product of the integrals of the corresponding functions. For example, this is the case if the functions $a_i(t)$ are given by different positive fractional powers of $t$. We deduce several results in combinatorics. We show that if $a(t)$ is a non-polynomial Hardy field function with polynomial growth, then every set of integers with positive upper density contains arithmetic progressions of the form ${m,m+[a(n)],...,m+\ell[a(n)]}$. Under suitable assumptions we get a related result concerning patterns of the form ${m, m+[a_1(n)],..., m+[a_\ell(n)]}.$

A Hardy field extension of Szemeredi's Theorem
Published • View PublicationBIB
In 1975 Szemerédi proved that a set of integers of positive upper density contains arbitrarily long arithmetic progressions. Bergelson and Leibman showed in 1996 that the common difference of the arithmetic progression can be a square, a cube, or more generally of the form $p(n)$ where $p(n)$ is any integer polynomial with zero constant term. We produce a variety of new results of this type related to sequences that are not polynomial. We show that the common difference of the progression in Szemerédi's theorem can be of the form $[n^δ]$ where $δ$ is any positive real number and $[x]$ denotes the integer part of $x$. More generally, the common difference can be of the form $[a(n)]$ where $a(x)$ is any function that is a member of a Hardy field and satisfies $a(x)/x^k\to \infty$ and $a(x)/x^{k+1}\to 0$ for some non-negative integer $k$. The proof combines a new structural result for Hardy sequences, techniques from ergodic theory, and some recent equidistribution results of sequences on nilmanifolds.
Powers of sequences and recurrence

We study recurrence, and multiple recurrence, properties along the $k$-th powers of a given set of integers. We show that the property of recurrence for some given values of $k$ does not give any constraint on the recurrence for the other powers. This is motivated by similar results in number theory concerning additive basis of natural numbers. Moreover, motivated by a result of Kamae and Mendès-France, that links single recurrence with uniform distribution properties of sequences, we look for an analogous result dealing with higher order recurrence and make a related conjecture.

Multiple recurence and convergence for sequences related to the prime numbers

For any measure preserving system $(X,\mathcal{X},μ,T)$ and $A\in\mathcal{X}$ with $μ(A)>0$, we show that there exist infinitely many primes $p$ such that $μ\bigl(A\cap T^{-(p-1)}A\cap T^{-2(p-1)}A\bigr) > 0$ (the same holds with $p-1$ replaced by $p+1$). Furthermore, we show the existence of the limit in $L^2(μ)$ of the associated ergodic average over the primes. A key ingredient is a recent result of Green and Tao on the von Mangoldt function. A combinatorial consequence is that every subset of the integers with positive upper density contains an arithmetic progression of length three and common difference of the form $p-1$ (or $p+1$) for some prime $p$.

Multiple ergodic averages for three polynomials and applications
Published • View PublicationBIB
We find the smallest characteristic factor and a limit formula for the multiple ergodic averages associated to any family of three polynomials and polynomial families of the form $\{l_1p,l_2p,...,l_kp\}$. We then derive several multiple recurrence results and combinatorial implications, including an answer to a question of Brown, Graham, and Landman, and a generalization of the Polynomial Szemerédi Theorem of Bergelson and Leibman for families of three polynomials with not necessarily zero constant term. We also simplify and generalize a recent result of Bergelson, Host, and Kra, showing that for all $ε>0$ and every subset of the integers $Λ$ the set $$ \big\{n\in\N\colon d^*\big(Λ\cap (Λ+p_1(n))\cap (Λ+p_2(n))\cap (Λ+ p_3(n))\big)>(d^*(Λ))^4-ε\big\} $$ has bounded gaps for "most" choices of integer polynomials $p_1,p_2,p_3$.
On the degree of regularity of generalized van der Waerden triples

Let $1 \leq a \leq b$ be integers. A triple of the form $(x,ax+d,bx+2d)$, where $x,d$ are positive integers is called an {\em (a,b)-triple}. The {\em degree of regularity} of the family of all $(a,b)$-triples, denoted dor($a,b)$, is the maximum integer $r$ such that every $r$-coloring of $\mathbb{N}$ admits a monochromatic $(a,b)$-triple. We settle, in the affirmative, the conjecture that dor$(a,b) < \infty$ for all $(a,b) \neq (1,1)$. We also disprove the conjecture that dor($a,b) \in \{1,2,\infty\}$ for all $(a,b)$.

Ergodic Averages for Independent Polynomials and Applications

Szemerédi's Theorem states that a set of integers with positive upper density contains arbitrarily long arithmetic progressions. Bergelson and Leibman generalized this, showing that sets of integers with positive upper density contain arbitrarily long polynomial configurations; Szemerédi's Theorem corresponds to the linear case of the polynomial theorem. We focus on the case farthest from the linear case, that of rationally independent polynomials. We derive results in ergodic theory and in combinatorics for rationally independent polynomials, showing that their behavior differs sharply from the general situation.
