Near-tight closure bounds for Littlestone and threshold dimensions
We study closure properties for the Littlestone and threshold dimensions of binary hypothesis classes. Given classes $\mathcal{H}_1, \ldots, \mathcal{H}_k$ of Boolean functions with bounded Littlestone (respectively, threshold) dimension, we establish an upper bound on the Littlestone (respectively, threshold) dimension of the class defined by applying an arbitrary binary aggregation rule to $\mathcal{H}_1, \ldots, \mathcal{H}_k$. We also show that our upper bounds are nearly tight. Our upper bounds give an exponential (in $k$) improvement upon analogous bounds shown by Alon et al. (COLT 2020), thus answering a question posed by their work.

Haramaty and Sudan considered the problem of transmitting a message between two people, Alice and Bob, when Alice's and Bob's priors on the message are allowed to differ by at most a given factor. To find a deterministic compression scheme for this problem, they showed that it is sufficient to obtain an upper bound on the chromatic number of a graph, denoted $U(N,s,k)$ for parameters $N,s,k$, whose vertices are nested sequences of subsets and whose edges are between vertices that have similar sequences of sets. In turn, there is a close relationship between the problem of determining the chromatic number of $U(N,s,k)$ and a local graph coloring problem considered by Erdős et al. We generalize the results of Erdős et al. by finding bounds on the chromatic numbers of graphs $H$ and $G$ when there is a homomorphism $φ:H\rightarrow G$ that satisfies a nice property. We then use these results to improve upper and lower bounds on $χ(U(N,s,k))$.

The digraph chromatic number of a directed graph $D$, denoted $χ_A(D)$, is the minimum positive integer $k$ such that there exists a partition of the vertices of $D$ into $k$ disjoint sets, each of which induces an acyclic subgraph. For any $m \geq 1$, a digraph is weakly $m$-degenerate if each of its induced subgraphs has a vertex of in-degree or out-degree less than $m$. We introduce a generalization of the digraph chromatic number, namely $χ_m(D)$, which is the minimum number of sets into which the vertices of a digraph $D$ can be partitioned so that each set induces a weakly $m$-degenerate subgraph. We show that for all digraphs $D$ without directed 2-cycles, $χ_m(D) \leq \frac{2Δ(D)}{4m+1} + O(1)$. Because $χ_1(D) = χ_A(D)$, we obtain as a corollary that $χ_A(D) \leq 2/5 \cdot Δ(D) + O(1)$. We then use this bound to show that $χ_A(D) \leq \sqrt{2/3} \cdot \tildeΔ(D) + O(1)$, substantially improving a bound of Harutyunyan and Mohar that states that $χ_A(D) \leq (1 - e^{-13})\cdot \tildeΔ(D)$ for large enough $\tildeΔ(D)$.

An acyclic set in a digraph is a set of vertices that induces an acyclic subgraph. In 2011, Harutyunyan conjectured that every planar digraph on $n$ vertices without directed 2-cycles possesses an acyclic set of size at least $3n/5$. We prove this conjecture for digraphs where every directed cycle has length at least 8. More generally, if $g$ is the length of the shortest directed cycle, we show that there exists an acyclic set of size at least $(1 - 3/g)n$.

A linear equation is $r$-regular, if, for every $r$-coloring of the positive integers, there exist positive integers of the same color which satisfy the equation. In 2005, Fox and Radoicic conjectured that the equation $x_1 + 2x_2 + \cdots + 2^{n-2}x_{n-1} - 2^{n-1}x_n = 0$, for any $n \geq 2$, has a degree of regularity of $n-1$, which would verify a conjecture of Rado from 1933. Rado's conjecture has since been verified with a different family of equations. In this paper, we show that Fox and Radoicic's family of equations indeed have a degree of regularity of $n-1$. We also provide a few extensions of this result.

We define a linear homogeneous equation to be strongly r-regular if, when a finite number of inequalities is added to the equation, the system of the equation and inequalities is still r-regular. In this paper, we show that, if a linear homogeneous equation is r-regular, then it is strongly r-regular. In 2009, Alexeev and Tsimerman introduced a family of equations, each of which is (n-1)-regular but not n-regular, verifying a conjecture of Rado from 1933. These equations are actually strongly (n-1)-regular as an immediate corollary of our results.
