On the Periodicity of k-distance Graphs
The $k$-distance graph $G^k$ of a graph $G$ has the same vertex set as $G$ and two vertices are adjacent if and only if their distance is $k$ in $G$. These graphs have been extensively studied for their connection properties. In this paper, we study various properties of these graphs, including clique number and periodicity. For all $k$, we show that there exists a $k$-distance graph that is weakly periodic for any size period. Our main result is a proof that if $k > 2$ then there exists a $k$-distance graph of any size (strong) period. Finally, we provide evidence that there exists an upper bound on the periodicity of a connected $2$-distance graph as a function of $|V|$.

Diameter Constraints in 2-distance Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
For any finite, simple graph $G = (V,E)$, its $2$-distance graph $G_2$ is a graph having the same vertex set $V$ where two vertices are adjacent if and only if their distance is $2$ in $G$. Connectivity and diameter properties of these graphs have been well studied. For example, it has been shown that if ${\rm diam}(G) = k \geq 3$ then $\lceil \frac{1}{2} k \rceil \leq {\rm diam}(G_2)$, and that this bound is sharp. In this paper, we prove that ${\rm diam}(G_2) = \infty$ (that is, $G_2$ is disconnected) or otherwise ${\rm diam}(G_2) \leq k + 2$. In addition, we show that this inequality is sharp for any even $k$, a result that we verify for some higher orders through judicious use of a \textsc{sat} solver.

Complexity of diameter on AT-free graphs is linear
Published • View PublicationBIB
We develop a linear time algorithm for finding the diameter of an asteroidal triple-free (AT-free) graph. Furthermore, we update the definition of polar pairs and develop new properties of polar pairs for (weak) dominating pair graphs. We prove that the problem of computing a simplicial vertex in a general graph can be accomplished in O(n^2) based on an existing reduction to the problem of finding diameter in an AT-free graph. We improve the best-known run-time complexities of several graph theoretical problems.
