A Supervised Learning Approach to Rankability
Published • View PublicationBIB
The rankability of data is a recently proposed problem that considers the ability of a dataset, represented as a graph, to produce a meaningful ranking of the items it contains. To study this concept, a number of rankability measures have recently been proposed, based on comparisons to a complete dominance graph via combinatorial and linear algebraic methods. In this paper, we review these measures and highlight some questions to which they give rise before going on to propose new methods to assess rankability, which are amenable to efficient estimation. Finally, we compare these measures by applying them to both synthetic and real-life sports data.

Barabanov norms, Lipschitz continuity and monotonicity for the max algebraic joint spectral radius
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present several results describing the interplay between the max algebraic joint spectral radius (JSR) for compact sets of matrices and suitably defined matrix norms. In particular, we extend a classical result for the conventional algebra, showing that the JSR can be described in terms of induced norms of the matrices in the set. We also show that for a set generating an irreducible semigroup (in a cone-theoretic sense), a monotone Barabanov norm always exists. This fact is then used to show that the max algebraic JSR is locally Lipschitz continuous on the space of compact irreducible sets of matrices with respect to the Hausdorff distance. We then prove that the JSR is Hoelder continuous on the space of compact sets of nonnegative matrices. Finally, we prove a strict monotonicity property for the max algebraic JSR that echoes a fact for the classical JSR.

Extreme Points of the Local Differential Privacy Polytope
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the convex polytope of n x n stochastic matrices that define locally differentially private mechanisms. We first present invariance properties of the polytope and results reducing the number of constraints needed to define it. Our main results concern the extreme points of the polytope. In particular, we completely characterise these for matrices with 1, 2 or n non-zero columns.

Differentially Private Response Mechanisms on Categorical Data
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study mechanisms for differential privacy on finite datasets. By deriving \emph{sufficient sets} for differential privacy we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for differential privacy, a tight lower bound on the maximal expected error of a discrete mechanism and a characterisation of the optimal mechanism which minimises the maximal expected error within the class of mechanisms considered.
The Markov chain tree theorem and the state reduction algorithm in commutative semirings
Published in Linear Algebra and its Applications 468 (2015) 184-196 • View PublicationBIB
We extend the Markov chain tree theorem to general commutative semirings, and we generalize the state reduction algorithm to commutative semifields. This leads to a new universal algorithm, whose prototype is the state reduction algorithm which computes the Markov chain tree vector of a stochastic matrix.
