A unified approach to structural limits, and limits of graphs with bounded tree-depth
Published in volume 263 number 1272 of Memoirs of the American Mathematical Society. AMS, 2020 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we introduce a general framework for the study of limits of relational structures in general and graphs in particular, which is based on a combination of model theory and (functional) analysis. We show how the various approaches to graph limits fit to this framework and that they naturally appear as "tractable cases" of a general theory. As an outcome of this, we provide extensions of known results. We believe that this put these into next context and perspective. For example, we prove that the sparse--dense dichotomy exactly corresponds to random free graphons. The second part of the paper is devoted to the study of sparse structures. First, we consider limits of structures with bounded diameter connected components and we prove that in this case the convergence can be "almost" studied component-wise. We also propose the structure of limits objects for convergent sequences of sparse structures. Eventually, we consider the specific case of limits of colored rooted trees with bounded height and of graphs with bounded tree-depth, motivated by their role of elementary brick these graphs play in decompositions of sparse graphs, and give an explicit construction of a limit object in this case. This limit object is a graph built on a standard probability space with the property that every first-order definable set of tuples is measurable. This is an example of the general concept of {\em modeling} we introduce here. Our example is also the first "intermediate class" with explicitly defined limit structures.
A Model Theory Approach to Structural Limits
Published in Commentationes Mathematicae Universitatis Carolinae 53, 4 (2012) 581-603 • Search Publication
The goal of this paper is to unify two lines in a particular area of graph limits. First, we generalize and provide unified treatment of various graph limit concepts by means of a combination of model theory and analysis. Then, as an example, we generalize limits of bounded degree graphs from subgraph testing to finite model testing.
A note on Fiedler value of classes with sublinear separators
The $n$-th Fiedler value of a class of graphs $\mathcal C$ is the maximum second eigenvalue $λ_2(G)$ of a graph $G\in\mathcal C$ with $n$ vertices. In this note we relate this value to shallow minors and, as a corollary, we determine the right order of the $n$-th Fiedler value for some minor closed classes of graphs, including the class of planar graphs.
Colouring Edges with many Colours in Cycles
The arboricity of a graph G is the minimum number of colours needed to colour the edges of G so that every cycle gets at least two colours. Given a positive integer p, we define the generalized p-arboricity Arb_p(G) of a graph G as the minimum number of colours needed to colour the edges of a multigraph G in such a way that every cycle C gets at least min(|C|; p + 1) colours. In the particular case where G has girth at least p + 1, Arb_p(G) is the minimum size of a partition of the edge set of G such that the union of any p parts induce a forest. If we require further that the edge colouring be proper, i.e., adjacent edges receive distinct colours, then the minimum number of colours needed is the generalized p-acyclic edge chromatic number of G. In this paper, we relate the generalized p-acyclic edge chromatic numbers and the generalized p-arboricities of a graph G to the density of the multigraphs having a shallow subdivision as a subgraph of G.
Characterisations and Examples of Graph Classes with Bounded Expansion
Published in European J. Combinatorics 33.3:350-373, 2012 • View PublicationBIB
Classes with bounded expansion, which generalise classes that exclude a topological minor, have recently been introduced by Nešetřil and Ossona de Mendez. These classes are defined by the fact that the maximum average degree of a shallow minor of a graph in the class is bounded by a function of the depth of the shallow minor. Several linear-time algorithms are known for bounded expansion classes (such as subgraph isomorphism testing), and they allow restricted homomorphism dualities, amongst other desirable properties. In this paper we establish two new characterisations of bounded expansion classes, one in terms of so-called topological parameters, the other in terms of controlling dense parts. The latter characterisation is then used to show that the notion of bounded expansion is compatible with Erdös-Rényi model of random graphs with constant average degree. In particular, we prove that for every fixed $d>0$, there exists a class with bounded expansion, such that a random graph of order $n$ and edge probability $d/n$ asymptotically almost surely belongs to the class. We then present several new examples of classes with bounded expansion that do not exclude some topological minor, and appear naturally in the context of graph drawing or graph colouring. In particular, we prove that the following classes have bounded expansion: graphs that can be drawn in the plane with a bounded number of crossings per edge, graphs with bounded stack number, graphs with bounded queue number, and graphs with bounded non-repetitive chromatic number. We also prove that graphs with `linear' crossing number are contained in a topologically-closed class, while graphs with bounded crossing number are contained in a minor-closed class.
Trémaux trees and planarity

We present a simplified version of the DFS-based Left-Right planarity testing and embedding algorithm implemented in Pigale which has been considered as the fastest implemented one [J.M. Boyer, P.F. Cortese, M. Patrignani, and G. Di Battista. Stop minding your P's and Q's: implementing fast and simple DFS-based planarity and embedding algorithm. In Graph Drawing, volume 2912 of Lecture Notes in Computer Science, pages 25-36. Springer, 2004.]. We give here a simple full justification of the algorithm, based on a preliminary extended study of topological properties of DFS trees.
Regular embeddings of multigraphs

We prove that the vertex set of any twin-free multigraph G has an embedding into some point set P of some Euclidean space Rk, such that the automorphism group of G is isomorphic to the isometry group of Rk globally preserving P.
Grad and classes with bounded expansion I. decompositions

We introduce classes of graphs with bounded expansion as a generalization of both proper minor closed classes and degree bounded classes. Such classes are based on a new invariant, the greatest reduced average density (grad) of G with rank r, grad r(G). For these classes we prove the existence of several partition results such as the existence of low tree-width and low tree-depth colorings. This generalizes and simplifies several earlier results (obtained for minor closed classes).

Grad and Classes with Bounded Expansion II. Algorithmic Aspects
Published in KAM-DIMATIA Series 2005-740 (2005) 1-20 • Search Publication
Classes of graphs with bounded expansion are a generalization of both proper minor closed classes and degree bounded classes. Such classes are based on a new invariant, the greatest reduced average density (grad) of G with rank r, ∇r(G). These classes are also characterized by the existence of several partition results such as the existence of low tree-width and low tree-depth colorings. These results lead to several new linear time algorithms, such as an algorithm for counting all the isomorphs of a fixed graph in an input graph or an algorithm for checking whether there exists a subset of vertices of a priori bounded size such that the subgraph induced by this subset satisfies some arbirtrary but fixed first order sentence. We also show that for fixed p, computing the distances between two vertices up to distance p may be performed in constant time per query after a linear time preprocessing. We also show, extending several earlier results, that a class of graphs has sublinear separators if it has sub-exponential expansion. This result result is best possible in general.
Grad and classes with bounded expansion III. restricted dualities
Published in KAM-DIMATIA Series 2005-741 (2005) 1-14 • Search Publication
We study restricted homomorphism dualities in the context of classes with bounded expansion. This presents a generalization of restricted dualities obtained earlier for bounded degree graphs and also for proper minor closed classes. This is related to distance coloring of graphs and to the ''approximative version'' of Hadwiger conjecture.
