Combinatorics and large genus asymptotics of the Brézin--Gross--Witten numbers
In this paper, we study combinatorial and asymptotic properties of some interesting rational numbers called the Brézin--Gross--Witten (BGW) numbers, which can be represented as the intersection numbers of psi and Theta classes on the moduli space of stable algebraic curves. In particular, we discover and prove the uniform large genus leading asymptotics of certain normalized BGW numbers, and give a new proof of the polynomiality phenomenon for the large genus asymptotics. We also propose, with extensive numerical data, several new conjectures including monotonicity and integrality on the BGW numbers. Applications to the Painlevé II hierarchy and to the BGW-kappa numbers are given.
Topological recursion on the Bessel curve

The Witten-Kontsevich theorem states that a certain generating function for intersection numbers on the moduli space of stable curves is a tau-function for the KdV integrable hierarchy. This generating function can be recovered via the topological recursion applied to the Airy curve $x=\frac{1}{2}y^2$. In this paper, we consider the topological recursion applied to the irregular spectral curve $xy^2=\frac{1}{2}$, which we call the Bessel curve. We prove that the associated partition function is also a KdV tau-function, which satisfies Virasoro constraints, a cut-and-join type recursion, and a quantum curve equation. Together, the Airy and Bessel curves govern the local behaviour of all spectral curves with simple branch points.

We study topological recursion on the irregular spectral curve $xy^2-xy+1=0$, which produces a weighted count of dessins d'enfant. This analysis is then applied to topological recursion on the spectral curve $xy^2=1$, which takes the place of the Airy curve $x=y^2$ to describe asymptotic behaviour of enumerative problems associated to irregular spectral curves. In particular, we calculate all one-point invariants of the spectral curve $xy^2=1$ via a new three-term recursion for the number of dessins d'enfant with one face.

We define a new Hurwitz problem which is essentially a small core of the simple Hurwitz problem. The corresponding Hurwitz numbers have simpler formulae, satisfy effective recursion relations and determine the simple Hurwitz numbers. We also apply this idea of finding a smaller simpler enumerative problem to orbifold Hurwitz numbers and Belyi Hurwitz numbers.
