Results on formally dual sets in finite abelian groups of size 64 obtained from a graph search algorithm
We shortly present two small results regarding the study formal duality in finite abelian groups as introduced by Cohn, Kumar, Reiher and Schürmann. In particular, we give a new example of a formally self dual set in $\mathbb{Z}_2^2\times\mathbb{Z}_4^2$ and computed nonexistence of primitive formally dual sets of size $8$ in $\mathbb{Z}_8^2$.

Sailing League Problems
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Designs, 32 (2024), 171-189 • View PublicationBIB
We describe a class of combinatorial design problems which typically occur in professional sailing league competitions. We discuss connections to resolvable block designs and equitable coverings and to scheduling problems in operations research. We in particular give suitable boolean quadratic and integer linear optimization problem formulations, as well as further heuristics and restrictions, that can be used to solve sailing league problems in practice. We apply those techniques to three case studies obtained from real sailing leagues and compare the results with previously used tournament plans.

Formal self duality

We study the notion of formal self duality in finite abelian groups. Formal duality in finite abelian groups has been proposed by Cohn, Kumar, Reiher and Schürmann. In this paper we give a precise definition of formally self dual sets and discuss results from the literature in this perspective. Also, we discuss the connection to formally dual codes. We prove that formally self dual sets can be reduced to primitive formally self dual sets similar to a previously known result on general formally dual sets. Furthermore, we describe several properties of formally self dual sets. Also, some new examples of formally self dual sets are presented within this paper. Lastly, we study formally self dual sets of the form $\{(x,F(x)) \ : \ x\in\mathbb{F}_{2^n}\}$ where $F$ is a vectorial Boolean function mapping $\mathbb{F}_{2^n}$ to $\mathbb{F}_{2^n}$.

Formal Duality in Finite Abelian Groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
Inspired by an experimental study of energy-minimizing periodic configurations in Euclidean space, Cohn, Kumar and Schürmann proposed the concept of formal duality between a pair of periodic configurations, which indicates an unexpected symmetry possessed by the energy-minimizing periodic configurations. Later on, Cohn, Kumar, Reiher and Schürmann translated the formal duality between a pair of periodic configurations into the formal duality of a pair of subsets in a finite abelian group. This insight suggests to study the combinatorial counterpart of formal duality, which is a configuration named formally dual pair. In this paper, we initiate a systematic investigation on formally dual pairs in finite abelian groups, which involves basic concepts, constructions, characterizations and nonexistence results. In contrast to the belief that primitive formally dual pairs are very rare in cyclic groups, we construct three families of primitive formally dual pairs in noncyclic groups. These constructions enlighten us to propose the concept of even sets, which reveals more structural information about formally dual pairs and leads to a characterization of rank three primitive formally dual pairs. Finally, we derive some nonexistence results about primitive formally dual pairs, which are in favor of the main conjecture that except two small examples, no primitive formally dual pair exists in cyclic groups.

Formal-dual subsets of cyclic groups of prime power order
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the notion of formal-duality over finite cyclic groups of prime power order as introduced by Cohn, Kumar, Reiher and Schürmann. We will prove that for any cyclic group of odd prime power order, as well as for any cyclic group of order $2^{2l+1}$, there is no primitive pair of formally-dual subsets. This partially proves a conjecture, made by the priorly mentioned authors, that the only cyclic groups with a pair of primitive formally-dual subsets are $\{0\}$ and $\mathbb{Z}/4\mathbb{Z}$.
