On the combinatorial structure of graphs with a spectral idempotent of small dual diameter
Let $Γ$ be a connected regular graph with an eigenvalue $λ$ and corresponding idempotent $E_λ$. Let ${\cal E}_λ=\langle J,E_λ\rangle^\circ$ be the algebra generated by $J$ and $E_λ$ with respect to the entrywise-Hadamard product, where $J$ is the all-$1$ matrix. We study the combinatorial structure of a graph $Γ$ for which ${\cal E}_λ$ has dimension $2$, giving a combinatorial characterization of such graphs in terms of equitable partitions. We present many examples and classify the distance-regular graphs with this property, as well as graphs that generate a $3$-class association scheme. We also study the graphs that have two eigenvalues $λ$ for which ${\rm dim}({\cal E}_λ)=2$ and determine all such graphs with four distinct eigenvalues.

On Hoffman polynomials of $λ$-doubly stochastic irreducible matrices and commutative association schemes
Let $Γ$ denote a finite (strongly) connected regular (di)graph with adjacency matrix $A$. The {\em Hoffman polynomial} $h(t)$ of $Γ=Γ(A)$ is the unique polynomial of smallest degree satisfying $h(A)=J$, where $J$ denotes the all-ones matrix. Let $X$ denote a nonempty finite set. A nonnegative matrix $B\in{\mbox{Mat}}_X({\mathbb R})$ is called {\em $λ$-doubly stochastic} if $\sum_{z\in X} (B)_{yz}=\sum_{z\in X} (B)_{zy}=λ$ for each $y\in X$. In this paper we first show that there exists a polynomial $h(t)$ such that $h(B)=J$ if and only if $B$ is a $λ$-doubly stochastic irreducible matrix. This result allows us to define the Hoffman polynomial of a $λ$-doubly stochastic irreducible matrix. Now, let $B\in{\mbox{Mat}}_X({\mathbb R})$ denote a normal irreducible nonnegative matrix, and ${\cal B}=\{p(B)\mid p\in{\mathbb{C}}[t]\}$ denote the vector space over ${\mathbb{C}}$ of all polynomials in $B$. Let us define a $01$-matrix $\widehat{A}$ in the following way: $(\widehat{A})_{xy}=1$ if and only if $(B)_{xy}>0$ $(x,y\in X)$. Let $Γ=Γ(\widehat{A})$ denote a (di)graph with adjacency matrix $\widehat{A}$, diameter $D$, and let $A_D$ denote the distance-$D$ matrix of $Γ$. We show that ${\cal B}$ is the Bose--Mesner algebra of a commutative $D$-class association scheme if and only if $B$ is a normal $λ$-doubly stochastic matrix with $D+1$ distinct eigenvalues and $A_D$ is a polynomial in $B$.

On commutative association schemes and associated (directed) graphs
Let ${\cal M}$ denote the Bose--Mesner algebra of a commutative $d$-class association scheme ${\mathfrak X}$ (not necessarily symmetric), and $Γ$ denote a (strongly) connected (directed) graph with adjacency matrix $A$. Under the assumption that $A$ belongs to ${\cal M}$, we describe the combinatorial structure of $Γ$. Moreover, we provide an algebraic-combinatorial characterization of $Γ$ when $A$ generates ${\cal M}$. Among else, we show that, if ${\mathfrak X}$ is a commutative $3$-class association scheme that is not an amorphic symmetric scheme, then we can always find a (directed) graph $Γ$ such that the adjacency matrix $A$ of $Γ$ generates the Bose--Mesner algebra ${\cal M}$ of ${\mathfrak X}$.

On (almost) $2$-$Y$-homogeneous distance-biregular graphs
Let $Γ$ denote a bipartite graph with vertex set $X$, color partitions $Y$, $Y'$, and assume that every vertex in $Y$ has eccentricity $D\ge 3$. For $z\in X$ and a non-negative integer $i$, let $Γ_{i}(z)$ denote the set of vertices in $X$ that are at distance $i$ from $z$. Graph $Γ$ is almost $2$-$Y$-homogeneous whenever for all $i \; (1\leq i \leq D-2)$ and for all $x\in Y$, $y \in Γ_2(x)$ and $z \in Γ_{i}(x)\capΓ_i(y)$, the number of common neighbours of $x$ and $y$ which are at distance $i-1$ from $z$ is independent of the choice of $x$, $y$ and $z$. In addition, if the above condition holds also for $i=D-1$, then we say that $Γ$ is $2$-$Y$-homogeneous. Now, let $Γ$ denote a distance-biregular graph. In this paper we study the intersection arrays of $Γ$ and we give sufficient and necessary conditions under which $Γ$ is (almost) $2$-$Y$-homogeneous. In the case when $Γ$ is $2$-$Y$-homogeneous we write the intersection numbers of the color class $Y$ in terms of three parameters.
On certain regular nicely distance-balanced graphs
A connected graph $\G$ is called {\em nicely distance--balanced}, whenever there exists a positive integer $γ=γ(\G)$, such that for any two adjacent vertices $u,v$ of $\G$ there are exactly $γ$ vertices of $\G$ which are closer to $u$ than to $v$, and exactly $γ$ vertices of $\G$ which are closer to $v$ than to $u$. Let $d$ denote the diameter of $\G$. It is known that $d \le γ$, and that nicely distance-balanced graphs with $γ= d$ are precisely complete graphs and cycles of length $2d$ or $2d+1$. In this paper we classify regular nicely distance-balanced graphs with $γ=d+1$.

Let $Γ$ denote an undirected, connected, regular graph with vertex set $X$, adjacency matrix $A$, and ${d+1}$ distinct eigenvalues. Let ${\mathcal A}={\mathcal A}(Γ)$ denote the subalgebra of Mat$_X({\mathbb C})$ generated by $A$. We refer to ${\mathcal A}$ as the {\it adjacency algebra} of $Γ$. In this paper we investigate algebraic and combinatorial structure of $Γ$ for which the adjacency algebra ${\mathcal A}$ is closed under Hadamard multiplication. In particular, under this simple assumption, we show the following: (i) ${\mathcal A}$ has a standard basis $\{I,F_1,\ldots,F_d\}$; (ii) for every vertex there exists identical distance-faithful intersection diagram of $Γ$ with $d+1$ cells; (iii) the graph $Γ$ is quotient-polynomial; and (iv) if we pick $F\in \{I,F_1,\ldots,F_d\}$ then $F$ has $d+1$ distinct eigenvalues if and only if span$\{I,F_1,\ldots,F_d\}=$span$\{I,F,\ldots,F^d\}$. We describe the combinatorial structure of quotient-polynomial graphs with diameter $2$ and $4$ distinct eigenvalues. As a consequence of the technique from the paper we give an algorithm which computes the number of distinct eigenvalues of any Hermitian matrix using only elementary operations. When such a matrix is the adjacency matrix of a graph $Γ$, a simple variation of the algorithm allow us to decide wheter $Γ$ is distance-regular or not. In this context, we also propose an algorithm to find which distance-$i$ matrices are polynomial in $A$, giving also these polynomials.

On a version of the spectral excess theorem
Given a regular (connected) graph $Γ=(X,E)$ with adjacency matrix $A$, $d+1$ distinct eigenvalues, and diameter $D$, we give a characterization of when its distance matrix $A_D$ is a polynomial in $A$, in terms of the adjacency spectrum of $Γ$ and the arithmetic (or harmonic) mean of the numbers of vertices at distance $\le D-1$ of every vertex. The same results is proved for any graph by using its Laplacian matrix $L$ and corresponding spectrum. When $D=d$ we reobtain the spectral excess theorem characterizing distance-regular graphs.
