Generalised Erdős distance theory on graphs
The famous Erdős distinct distances problem asks the following: how many distinct distances must exist between a set of $n$ points in the plane? There are many generalisations of this question that ask one to consider different spaces and metrics, or larger structures of points. We bring these problems into a common framework using the concept of $g$-rigidity. Specifically, if $G=(V,E)$ is a (hyper)graph, $g$ is a map assigning polynomial measurements to the edges of $G$ and $f_{g,G}(P^V)$ gives the set of $g$-distinct realisations of the $g$-rigid graph $G$, where vertices must lie in a point set $P$, our main results describe sharp lower bounds for the size of $\big|f_{g,G}(P^V)\big|$. This allows us to obtain results for pseudo-Euclidean metrics, $\ell_p$ metrics, dot-product problems, matrix completion problems, and symmetric tensor completion problems.
In addition, we use the recent work of Alon, Bucić and Sauermann along with a simple colouring argument to prove that the number of $\| \cdot\|$-distinct realisations of a graph $G=(V,E)$ within a $d$-dimensional point set $P$ is at least $Ω\left(\frac{|P|^{|V|-1}}{(\log |P|)^2} \right)$ for almost all $d$-norms. Our methods here also provide a short proof that the unit distance conjecture implies the pinned distance conjecture.
Additive growth amongst images of linearly independent analytic functions
Let $\mathcal{F}$ be a set of $n$ real analytic functions with linearly independent derivatives restricted to a compact interval $I$. We show that for any finite set $A \subset I$, there is a function $f \in \mathcal{F}$ that satisfies
$$|2^{n-1}f(A)-(2^{n-1}-1)f(A)|\gg_{\mathcal{F},I} |A|^{φ(n)},$$ where $φ:\mathbb{N} \to \mathbb{R}$ satisfies the recursive formula
$$φ(1)=1, \quad φ(n)=1+\frac{1}{1+\frac{1}{φ(n-1)}} \quad \text{for } n\geq 2.$$ The above result allows us to prove the bound
$$|2^nf(A-A)-(2^n-1)f(A-A)| \gg_{f,n,I} |A|^{1+φ(n)}$$ where $f$ is an analytic function for which any $n$ distinct non-trivial discrete derivatives of $f'$ are linearly independent. This condition is satisfied, for instance, by any polynomial function of degree $m \geq n+1$. We also check this condition for the function $\arctan(e^x)$ with $n=3$, allowing us to improve upon a recent bound on the additive growth of the set of angles in a Cartesian product due to Roche-Newton.
A Quadratic Vinogradov Mean Value Theorem in Finite Fields
Let $p$ be a prime, let $s \geq 3$ be a natural number and let $A \subseteq \mathbb{F}_p$ be a non-empty set satisfying $|A| \ll p^{1/2}$. Denoting $J_s(A)$ to be the number of solutions to the system of equations \[ \sum_{i=1}^{s} (x_i - x_{i+s}) = \sum_{i=1}^{s} (x_i^2 - x_{i+s}^2) = 0, \] with $x_1, \dots, x_{2s} \in A$, our main result implies that \[ J_s(A) \ll |A|^{2s - 2 - 1/9}. \] This can be seen as a finite field analogue of the quadratic Vinogradov mean value theorem. Our techniques involve a variety of combinatorial geometric estimates, including studying incidences between cartesian products $A\times A$ and a special family of modular hyperbolae.
