Sufficient conditions for a digraph to contain: a pre-Hamiltonian cycle and cycles of lengths 3 and 4
Let $D$ be a digraph of order $p\geq5$ with minimum degree at least $p-1$ and with minimum semi-degree at least $p/2-1$.
In his excellent and renowned paper, ``Long Cycles in Digraphs" (Proc. London Mathematical Society (3), 42 (1981), Thomassen fully characterized the following for $p=2n+1$: (i) $D$ has a cycle of length at least $2n$; and (ii) $D$ is Hamiltonian. Motivated by this result, and building on some of the ideas in Thomassen's paper, we investigated the Hamiltonicity (when $p$ is even) and pancyclcity (when $p$ is arbitrary) such digraphs. We have given a complete description of whether such digraphs are Hamiltonian ($p$ is even), are pancyclic ($p$ is arbitrary). Since the proof is very long, we have divided it into three parts.
In this paper, we provide a full description of the following: (iii) for $k=3$ and $k=4$, the digraph $D$ contains a cycle of length $k$; and (iv) the digraph $D$ contains a pre-Hamiltonian cycle, i.e. a cycle of length $p-1$.
On Hamiltonian bypasses in digraphs and bipartite digraphs
A Hamiltonian path in a digraph $D$ in which the initial vertex dominates the terminal vertex is called a Hamiltonian bypass. Let $D$ be a 2-strong digraph of order $p\geq 3$ and let $z$ be some vertex of $D$. Suppose that every vertex of $D$ other than $z$ has degree at least $p$. We introduce and study a conjecture which claims that there exists a smallest integer $k$ such that if $d(z)\geq k$, then $D$ contains a Hamiltonian bypass. In this paper, we prove: (i) If $D$ is Hamiltonian or $z$ has a degree greater than $(p-1)/3$,
then $D$ contains a Hamiltonian bypass. (ii) If a strong balanced bipartite digraph $B$ of order $2a\geq 6$ satisfies the condition that $d^+(u)+d^-(v)\geq a+1$ for all vertices $u$ and $v$ from different partite sets such that $B$ does not contain the arc $uv$, then $B$ contains a Hamiltonian bypass. Furthermore, the lower bound $a+1$ is sharp. The first result improves a result of Benhocine (J. of Graph Theory, 8, 1984) and a result of the author (Math. Problems of Computer Science,
54, 2020)
We also suggest some conjectures and problems.

In this paper we prove the following new sufficient condition for a digraph to be Hamiltonian:
{\it Let $D$ be a 2-strong digraph of order $n\geq 9$.
If $n-1$ vertices of $D$ have degrees at least $n+k$ and the remaining vertex has degree at least $n-k-4$, where $k$ is a non-negative integer, then $D$ is Hamiltonian}.
This is an extension of Ghouila-Houri's theorem for 2-strong digraphs and is a generalization of an early result of the author (DAN Arm. SSR (91(2):6-8, 1990). The obtained result is best possible in the sense that for $k=0$ there is a digraph of order $n=8$ (respectively, $n=9$) with the minimum degree $n-4=4$ (respectively, with the minimum $n-5=4$) whose $n-1$ vertices have degrees at least $n-1$, but it is not Hamiltonian.
We also give a new sufficient condition for a 3-strong digraph to be Hamiltonian-connected.
A Note on Hamiltonian Cycles in Digraphs with Large Degrees
In this note we prove:
{\it Let $D$ be a 2-strong digraph of order $n$ such that its $n-1$ vertices have degrees at least $n+k$ and the remaining vertex $z$ has degree at least $n-k-4$, where $k$ is a positive integer.
If $D$ contains a cycle of length at least $n-k-2$ passing through $z$, then $D$ is Hamiltonian}.
On Hamiltonian Bypasses in Digraphs satisfying Meyniel-like Condition
Let $G$ be a strongly connected directed graph of order $p\geq 3$. In this paper, we show that if $d(x)+d(y)\geq 2p-2$ (respectively, $d(x)+d(y)\geq 2p-1$) for every pair of non-adjacent vertices $x, y$, then $G$ contains a Hamiltonian path (with only a few exceptional cases that can be clearly characterized) in which the initial vertex dominates the terminal vertex (respectively, $G$ contains two distinct verteces $x$ and $y$ such that there are two internally disjoint $(x,y)$-paths of lengths $p-2$ and $2$).

We prove the following new results.
(a) Let $T$ be a regular tournament of order $2n+1\geq 11$ and $S$ a subset of $V(T)$. Suppose that $|S|\leq \frac{1}{2}(n-2)$ and $x$, $y$ are distinct vertices in $V(T)\setminus S$. If the subtournament $T-S$ contains an $(x,y)$-path of length $r$, where $3\leq r\leq |V(T)\setminus S|-2$, then $T-S$ also contains an $(x,y)$-path of length $r+1$.
(b) Let $T$ be an $m$-irregular tournament of order $p$, i.e., $|d^+(x)-d^-(x)|\le m$ for every vertex $x$ of $T.$ If $m\leq \frac{1}{3}(p-5)$ (respectively, $m\leq \frac{1}{5}(p-3)$), then for every pair of vertices $x$ and $y$, $T$ has an $(x,y)$-path of any length $k$, $4\leq k\leq p-1$ (respectively, $3\leq k\leq p-1$ or $T$ belongs to a family $\cal G$ of tournaments, which is defined in the paper). In other words, (b) means that if the semidegrees of every vertex of a tournament $T$ of order $p$ are between
$\frac{1}{3}(p+1)$ and $\frac{2}{3}(p-2)$ (respectively, between $\frac{1}{5}(2p-1)$ and $\frac{1}{5}(3p-4)$), then the claims in (b) hold.
Our results improve in a sense related results of Alspach (1967), Jacobsen (1972), Alspach et al. (1974), Thomassen (1978) and Darbinyan (1977, 1978, 1979), and are sharp in a sense.

C. Thomassen (Proc. London Math. Soc. (3) 42 (1981), 231-251) gave a characterization of strongly connected non-Hamiltonian digraphs of order $p\geq 3$ with minimum degree $p-1$. In this paper we give an analogous characterization of strongly connected non-Hamiltonian digraphs with Meyniel-type condition (the sum of degrees of every pair of non-adjacent vertices $x$ and $y$ at least $2p-2$). Moreover, we prove that such digraphs $D$ contain cycles of all lengths $k$, for $2\leq k\leq m$, where $m$ is the length of a longest cycle in $D$.

Y. Manoussakis (J. Graph Theory 16, 1992, 51-59) proposed the following conjecture.
\noindent\textbf{Conjecture}. {\it Let $D$ be a 2-strongly connected digraph of order $n$ such that for all distinct pairs of non-adjacent vertices $x$, $y$ and $w$, $z$, we have $d(x)+d(y)+d(w)+d(z)\geq 4n-3$. Then $D$ is Hamiltonian.}
In this paper, we confirm this conjecture. Moreover, we prove that if a digraph $D$ satisfies the conditions of this conjecture and has a pair of non-adjacent vertices $\{x,y\}$ such that $d(x)+d(y)\leq 2n-4$, then $D$ contains cycles of all lengths $3, 4, \ldots , n$.

R. Wang (Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 19(3), 2017) proposed the following problem.
\textbf{Problem.} Let $D$ be a strongly connected balanced bipartite directed graph of order $2a\geq 8$. Suppose that $d(x)\geq 2a-k$, $ d(y)\geq a+k$ or $d(y)\geq 2a-k$, $ d(x)\geq a+k$ for every pair of vertices $x,y$ with a common out-neighbour, where $2 \leq k\leq a/2$. Is $D$ Hamiltonian?
In this paper, we prove that if a digraph $D$ satisfies the conditions of this problem, then
(i) $D$ contains a cycle factor,
(ii) for every vertex $x\in V(D)$ there exists a vertex $y\in V(D)$ such that $x$ and $y$ have a common out-neighbour.

Let $x,y$ be distinct vertices in $D$. $\{x,y\}$ dominates a vertex $z$ if $x\rightarrow z$ and $y\rightarrow z$; in this case, we call the pair $\{x,y\}$ dominating. In this paper we prove:
If $ max\{d(x), d(y)\}\geq 2a-2$ for every dominating pair of vertices $\{x,y\}$, then $D$ contains cycles of all lengths $2,4, \ldots , 2a-2$ or $D$ is isomorphic to a certain digraph of order ten which we specify.
Cycles of each even lengths in balanced bipartite digraphs
Let $D$ be a strongly connected balanced bipartite directed graph of order $2a\geq 4$. Let $x,y$ be distinct vertices in $D$. $\{x,y\}$ dominates a vertex $z$ if $x\rightarrow z$ and $y\rightarrow z$; in this case, we call the pair $\{x,y\}$ dominating. In this paper we prove:
(i). If $a\geq 4$ and $ max\{d(x), d(y)\}\geq 2a-1$ for every dominating pair of vertices $\{x,y\}$, $D$ then contains a cycle of length $2a-2$ or $D$ is a directed cycle.
(ii). If $D$ contains a cycle of length $2a-2\geq 6$ and $max \{d(x), d(y)\}\geq 2a-2$ for every dominating pair of vertices $\{x,y\}$, then for any $k$, $1\leq k\leq a-1$, $D$ contains a cycle of length $2k$.
(iii). If $a\geq 4$ and $ max\{d(x), d(y)\}\geq 2a-1$ for every dominating pair of vertices $\{x,y\}$, then for every $k$, $1\leq k\leq a$, $D$ contains a cycle of length $2k$ unless $D$ is isomorphic to only one exceptional digraph of order eight.

We prove two sharp sufficient conditions for hamiltonian cycles in balanced bipartite directed graph. Let $D$ be a strongly connected balanced bipartite directed graph of order $2a$. Let $x,y$ be distinct vertices in $D$. $\{x,y\}$ dominates a vertex $z$ if $x\rightarrow z$ and $y\rightarrow z$; in this case, we call the pair $\{x,y\}$ dominating.
(i) {\it If $a\geq 4$ and $max \{d(x), d(y)\}\geq 2a-1$ for every dominating pair of vertices $\{x,y\}$, then either $D$ is hamiltonian or $D$ is isomorphic to one exceptional digraph of order eight.}
(ii) {\it If $a\geq 5$ and $d(x)+d(y)\geq 4a-3$ for every dominating pair of vertices $\{x,y\}$, then $D$ is hamiltonian.}
The first result improves a theorem of R. Wang (arXiv:1506.07949 [math.CO]), the second result, in particular, establishes a conjecture due to Bang-Jensen, Gutin and Li (J. Graph Theory , 22(2), 1996) for strongly connected balanced bipartite digraphs of order at least ten.
On cyclability of digraphs
Given a directed graph $D$ of order $n\geq 4$ and a nonempty subset $Y$ of vertices of $D$ such that in $D$ every vertex of $Y$ reachable from every other vertex of $Y$. Assume that for every triple $x,y,z\in Y$ such that $x$ and $y$ are nonadjacent: If there is no arc from $x$ to $z$, then $d(x)+d(y)+d^+(x)+d^-(z)\geq 3n-2$. If there is no arc from $z$ to $x$, then $d(x)+d(y)+d^+(z)+d^-(x)\geq 3n-2$. We prove that there is a directed cycle in $D$ which contains all the vertices of $Y$, except possibly one. This result is best possible in some sense and gives a answer to a question of H. Li, Flandrin and Shu (Discrete Mathematics, 307 (2007) 1291-1297).
On pre-Hamiltonian Cycles in Hamiltonian Digraphs
Let $D$ be a strongly connected directed graph of order $n\geq 4$. In \cite{[14]} (J. of Graph Theory, Vol.16, No. 5, 51-59, 1992) Y. Manoussakis proved the following theorem: Suppose that $D$ satisfies the following condition for every triple $x,y,z$ of vertices such that $x$ and $y$ are non-adjacent: If there is no arc from $x$ to $z$, then $d(x)+d(y)+d^+(x)+d^-(z)\geq 3n-2$. If there is no arc from $z$ to $x$, then $d(x)+d(y)+d^-(x)+d^+(z)\geq 3n-2$. Then $D$ is Hamiltonian. In this paper we show that: If $D$ satisfies the condition of Manoussakis' theorem, then $D$ contains a pre-Hamiltonian cycle (i.e., a cycle of length $n-1$) or $n$ is even and $D$ is isomorphic to the complete bipartite digraph with partite sets of cardinalities $n/2$ and $n/2$.

Let $D$ be a strongly connected directed graph of order $n\geq 4$ vertices which satisfies the following condition for every triple $x,y,z$ of vertices such that $x$ and $y$ are non-adjacent: If there is no arc from $x$ to $z$, then $d(x)+d(y)+d^+(x)+d^-(z)\geq 3n-2$. In [9] it was shown that $D$ contains a pre-Hamiltonian cycle (i.e., a cycle of length $n-1$) or $n$ is even and $D$ is isomorphic to the complete bipartite digraph with partite sets of cardinalities of $n/2$ and $n/2$. In this paper we show that $D$ contains also a Hamiltonian bypass, (i.e., a subdigraph obtained from a Hamiltonian cycle by reversing exactly one arc) or $D$ is isomorphic to one tournament of order 5.
On Hamiltonian Bypasses in one Class of Hamiltonian Digraphs
Let $D$ be a strongly connected directed graph of order $n\geq 4$ which satisfies the following condition (*): for every pair of non-adjacent vertices $x, y$ with a common in-neighbour $d(x)+d(y)\geq 2n-1$ and $min \{ d(x), d(y)\}\geq n-1$. In \cite{[2]} (J. of Graph Theory 22 (2) (1996) 181-187)) J. Bang-Jensen, G. Gutin and H. Li proved that $D$ is Hamiltonian. In [9] it was shown that if $D$ satisfies the condition (*) and the minimum semi-degree of $D$ at least two, then either $D$ contains a pre-Hamiltonian cycle (i.e., a cycle of length $n-1$) or $n$ is even and $D$ is isomorphic to the complete bipartite digraph (or to the complete bipartite digraph minus one arc) with partite sets of cardinalities of $n/2$ and $n/2$. In this paper we show that if the minimum out-degree of $D$ at least two and the minimum in-degree of $D$ at least three, then $D$ contains also a Hamiltonian bypass, (i.e., a subdigraph is obtained from a Hamiltonian cycle by reversing exactly one arc).
