Maximal integral point sets in affine planes over finite fields
Published in Discrete Mathematics Vol. 309, Nr. 13 (2009), Pages 4564-4575 • View PublicationBIB
Motivated by integral point sets in the Euclidean plane, we consider integral point sets in affine planes over finite fields. An integral point set is a set of points in the affine plane $\mathbb{F}_q^2$ over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$, where the formally defined squared Euclidean distance of every pair of points is a square in $\mathbb{F}_q$. It turns out that integral point sets over $\mathbb{F}_q$ can also be characterized as affine point sets determining certain prescribed directions, which gives a relation to the work of Blokhuis. Furthermore, in one important sub-case integral point sets can be restated as cliques in Paley graphs of square order. In this article we give new results on the automorphisms of integral point sets and classify maximal integral point sets over $\mathbb{F}_q$ for $q\leq 47$. Furthermore, we give two series of maximal integral point sets and prove their maximality.

No finite $5$-regular matchstick graph exists
A graph $G=(V,E)$ is called a unit-distance graph in the plane if there is an injective embedding of $V$ in the plane such that every pair of adjacent vertices are at unit distance apart. If additionally the corresponding edges are non-crossing and all vertices have the same degree $r$ we talk of a regular matchstick graph. Due to Euler's polyhedron formula we have $r\le 5$. The smallest known $4$-regular matchstick graph is the so called Harborth graph consisting of $52$ vertices. In this article we prove that no finite $5$-regular matchstick graph exists.

Classes of Complete Simple Games that are All Weighted
Published • View PublicationBIB
Important decisions are likely made by groups of agents. Thus group decision making is very common in practice. Very transparent group aggregating rules are given by weighted voting, where each agent is assigned a weight. Here a proposal is accepted if the sum of the weights of the supporting agents meets or exceeds a given quota. We study a more general class of binary voting systems -- complete simple games -- and propose an algorithm to determine which sub classes, parameterized by the agent's type composition, are weighted.
Constructing $7$-clusters
Published • View PublicationBIB
A set of $n$-lattice points in the plane, no three on a line and no four on a circle, such that all pairwise distances and all coordinates are integral is called an $n$-cluster (in $\mathbb{R}^2$). We determine the smallest existent $7$-cluster with respect to its diameter. Additionally we provide a toolbox of algorithms which allowed us to computationally locate over 1000 different $7$-clusters, some of them having huge integer edge lengths. On the way, we exhaustively determined all Heronian triangles with largest edge length up to $6\cdot 10^6$.

Optimal Binary Subspace Codes of Length 6, Constant Dimension 3 and Minimum Distance 4
Published in Contemporary Mathematics 632 (2015), ISBN 978-0-8218-9860-4, 157-176 • View PublicationBIB
It is shown that the maximum size of a binary subspace code of packet length $v=6$, minimum subspace distance $d=4$, and constant dimension $k=3$ is $M=77$; in Finite Geometry terms, the maximum number of planes in $\operatorname{PG}(5,2)$ mutually intersecting in at most a point is $77$. Optimal binary $(v,M,d;k)=(6,77,4;3)$ subspace codes are classified into $5$ isomorphism types, and a computer-free construction of one isomorphism type is provided. The construction uses both geometry and finite fields theory and generalizes to any $q$, yielding a new family of $q$-ary $(6,q^6+2q^2+2q+1,4;3)$ subspace codes.

Enumeration of weighted games with minimum and an analysis of voting power for bipartite complete games with minimum
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper is a twofold contribution. First, it contributes to the problem of enumerating some classes of simple games and in particular provides the number of weighted games with minimum and the number of weighted games for the dual class as well. Second, we focus on the special case of bipartite complete games with minimum, and we compare and rank these games according to the behavior of some efficient power indices of players of type 1 (or of type 2). The main result of this second part establishes all allowable rankings of these games when the Shapley-Shubik power index is used on players of type 1.

Heuristic and exact solutions to the inverse power index problem for small voting bodies
Published • View PublicationBIB
Power indices are mappings that quantify the influence of the members of a voting body on collective decisions a priori. Their nonlinearity and discontinuity makes it difficult to compute inverse images, i.e., to determine a voting system which induces a power distribution as close as possible to a desired one. This paper considers approximations and exact solutions to this inverse problem for the Penrose-Banzhaf index, which are obtained by enumeration and integer linear programming techniques. They are compared to the results of three simple solution heuristics. The heuristics perform well in absolute terms but can be improved upon very considerably in relative terms. The findings complement known asymptotic results for large voting bodies and may improve termination criteria for local search algorithms.

On $α$-roughly weighted games
Published • View PublicationBIB
Gvozdeva, Hemaspaandra, and Slinko (2011) have introduced three hierarchies for simple games in order to measure the distance of a given simple game to the class of (roughly) weighted voting games. Their third class $\mathcal{C}_α$ consists of all simple games permitting a weighted representation such that each winning coalition has a weight of at least 1 and each losing coalition a weight of at most $α$. For a given game the minimal possible value of $α$ is called its critical threshold value. We continue the work on the critical threshold value, initiated by Gvozdeva et al., and contribute some new results on the possible values for a given number of voters as well as some general bounds for restricted subclasses of games. A strong relation beween this concept and the cost of stability, i.e. the minimum amount of external payment to ensure stability in a coalitional game, is uncovered.

On minimum sum representations for weighted voting games
Published in Kurz, S. (2012). On minimum sum representations for weighted voting games. Annals of Operations Research, 196(1), 361-369 • View PublicationBIB
A proposal in a weighted voting game is accepted if the sum of the (non-negative) weights of the "yea" voters is at least as large as a given quota. Several authors have considered representations of weighted voting games with minimum sum, where the weights and the quota are restricted to be integers. Freixas and Molinero have classified all weighted voting games without a unique minimum sum representation for up to 8 voters. Here we exhaustively classify all weighted voting games consisting of 9 voters which do not admit a unique minimum sum integer weight representation.

On minimum integer representations of weighted games
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study minimum integer representations of weighted games, i.e., representations where the weights are integers and every other integer representation is at least as large in each component. Those minimum integer representations, if the exist at all, are linked with some solution concepts in game theory. Closing existing gaps in the literature, we prove that each weighted game with two types of voters admits a (unique) minimum integer representation, and give new examples for more than two types of voters without a minimum integer representation. We characterize the possible weights in minimum integer representations and give examples for $t\ge 4$ types of voters without a minimum integer representation preserving types, i.e., where we additionally require that the weights are equal within equivalence classes of voters.

On Dedekind's problem for complete simple games
Published • View PublicationBIB
We combine the parametric Barvinok algorithm with a generation algorithm for a finite list of suitably chosen discrete sub-cases on the enumeration of complete simple games, i.e. a special subclass of monotone Boolean functions. Recently, Freixas et al. have proven an enumeration formula for complete simple games with two types of voters. We will provide a shorter proof and an enumeration formula for complete simple games with two shift-minimal winning coalitions.

Construction of Large Constant Dimension Codes With a Prescribed Minimum Distance
Published in Lecture Notes Computer Science Vol. 5393, 2008, p. 31 - 42 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we construct constant dimension space codes with prescribed minimum distance. There is an increased interest in space codes since a paper by Koetter and Kschischang were they gave an application in network coding. There is also a connection to the theory of designs over finite fields. We will modify a method of Braun, Kerber and Laue which they used for the construction of designs over finite fields to do the construction of space codes. Using this approach we found many new constant dimension spaces codes with a larger number of codewords than previously known codes. We will finally give a table of the best found constant dimension space codes.

Maximal integral point sets over $\mathbb{Z}^2$
Published • View PublicationBIB
Geometrical objects with integral side lengths have fascinated mathematicians through the ages. We call a set $P=\{p_1,...,p_n\}\subset\mathbb{Z}^2$ a maximal integral point set over $\mathbb{Z}^2$ if all pairwise distances are integral and every additional point $p_{n+1}$ destroys this property. Here we consider such sets for a given cardinality and with minimum possible diameter. We determine some exact values via exhaustive search and give several constructions for arbitrary cardinalities. Since we cannot guarantee the maximality in these cases we describe an algorithm to prove or disprove the maximality of a given integral point set. We additionally consider restrictions as no three points on a line and no four points on a circle.

Integral point sets over finite fields
We consider point sets in the affine plane $\mathbb{F}_q^2$ where each Euclidean distance of two points is an element of $\mathbb{F}_q$. These sets are called integral point sets and were originally defined in $m$-dimensional Euclidean spaces $\mathbb{E}^m$. We determine their maximal cardinality $\mathcal{I}(\mathbb{F}_q,2)$. For arbitrary commutative rings $\mathcal{R}$ instead of $\mathbb{F}_q$ or for further restrictions as no three points on a line or no four points on a circle we give partial results. Additionally we study the geometric structure of the examples with maximum cardinality.

Bounds for the minimum diameter of integral point sets
Published in The Australasian Journal of Combinatorics, Vol. 39, Pages 233-240, 2007 • Search Publication
Geometrical objects with integral sides have attracted mathematicians for ages. For example, the problem to prove or to disprove the existence of a perfect box, that is, a rectangular parallelepiped with all edges, face diagonals and space diagonals of integer lengths, remains open. More generally an integral point set $\mathcal{P}$ is a set of $n$ points in the $m$-dimensional Euclidean space $\mathbb{E}^m$ with pairwise integral distances where the largest occurring distance is called its diameter. From the combinatorial point of view there is a natural interest in the determination of the smallest possible diameter $d(m,n)$ for given parameters $m$ and $n$. We give some new upper bounds for the minimum diameter $d(m,n)$ and some exact values.

Integral point sets over $\mathbb{Z}_n^m$
There are many papers studying properties of point sets in the Euclidean space $\mathbb{E}^m$ or on integer grids $\mathbb{Z}^m$, with pairwise integral or rational distances. In this article we consider the distances or coordinates of the point sets which instead of being integers are elements of $\mathbb{Z} / \mathbb{Z}n$, and study the properties of the resulting combinatorial structures.
