Discrete piecewise linear functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
The concept of permutograph is introduced and properties of integral functions on permutographs are established. The central result characterizes the class of integral functions that are representable as lattice polynomials. This result is used to establish lattice polynomial representations of piecewise linear functions on convex domains and continuous selectors on linear orders.

Partial cubes: structures, characterizations, and constructions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Partial cubes are isometric subgraphs of hypercubes. Structures on a graph defined by means of semicubes, and Djoković's and Winkler's relations play an important role in the theory of partial cubes. These structures are employed in the paper to characterize bipartite graphs and partial cubes of arbitrary dimension. New characterizations are established and new proofs of some known results are given. The operations of Cartesian product and pasting, and expansion and contraction processes are utilized in the paper to construct new partial cubes from old ones. In particular, the isometric and lattice dimensions of finite partial cubes obtained by means of these operations are calculated.

Cubical token systems
Published • View PublicationBIB
The paper deals with combinatorial and stochastic structures of cubical token systems. A cubical token system is an instance of a token system, which in turn is an instance of a transition system. It is shown that some basic results of combinatorial and stochastic parts of media theory hold almost in identical form for cubical token systems, although some underlying concepts are quite different. A representation theorem for a cubical token system is established asserting that the graph of such a system is cubical.

Fundamentals of media theory
Published • View PublicationBIB
Media theory is a new branch of discrete applied mathematics originally developed in mid-nineties to deal with stochastic evolution of preference relations in political science and mathematical psychology. The theory focuses on a particular semigroup of `messages' acting as transformations of a set of `states', called a `medium', whose axioms are both strong and natural. The term `medium' stems from a particular application in which the transformations formalize the effects, on an individual, of `tokens' of information delivered by the environment--that is, the `medium'. However, many different types of examples can be found, ranging from learning spaces to hypercube computers, suggesting that this concept is ubiquitous. The paper presents very basic concepts and results of media theory and is aimed at a wide body of researchers in discrete applied mathematics.

Media theory: representations and examples
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we develop a representational approach to media theory. We construct representations of media by well graded families of sets and partial cubes and establish the uniqueness of these representations. Two particular examples of media are also described in detail.

Weak order complexes
The paper presents geometric models for the set WO of weak orders on a finite set. In particulary, WO is modeled as a set of vertices of a cubical subdivision of a permutahedron. This approach is an alternative to the usual representation of WO by means of weak order polytopes.

The lattice dimension of a tree
The lattice dimension of a graph G is the minimal dimension of a cubic lattice in which G can be isometrically embedded. We prove that the lattice dimension of a tree with n leaves is $\lceil n/2 \rceil$.

Max-Min Representation of Piecewise Linear Functions
It is shown that a piecewise linear function can be represented as a Max-Min polynomial of its linear components.
