The Random Transposition Dynamics on Random Regular Graphs and the Gaussian Free Field
Published • View PublicationBIB
A single permutation, seen as union of disjoint cycles, represents a regular graph of degree two. Consider $d$ many independent random permutations and superimpose their graph structures. It is a common model of a random regular (multi-) graph of degree $2d$. We consider the following dynamics. The dimension (i.e. size) of each permutation grows by coupled Chinese Restaurant Processes, while in time each permutation evolves according to the random transposition chain. Asymptotically in the size of the graph one observes a remarkable evolution of short cycles and linear eigenvalue statistics in dimension and time. In dimension, it was shown by Johnson and Pal (2014) that cycle counts are described by a Poisson field of Yule processes. Here, we give a Poisson random surface description in dimension and time of the limiting cycle counts for every $d$. As $d$ grows to infinity, the fluctuation of the limiting cycle counts, across dimension, converges to the Gaussian Free Field. In time this field is preserved by a stationary Gaussian dynamics. The laws of these processes are similar to eigenvalue fluctuations of the minor process of a real symmetric Wigner matrix whose coordinates evolve as i.i.d. stationary stochastic processes.

Permuted Random Walk Exits Typically in Linear Time

Given a permutation sigma of the integers {-n,-n+1,...,n} we consider the Markov chain X_{sigma}, which jumps from k to sigma (k\pm 1) equally likely if k\neq -n,n. We prove that the expected hitting time of {-n,n} starting from any point is Theta(n) with high probability when sigma is a uniformly chosen permutation. We prove this by showing that with high probability, the digraph of allowed transitions is an Eulerian expander; we then utilize general estimates of hitting times in directed Eulerian expanders.
Escape rates for rotor walk in Z^d

Rotor walk is a deterministic analogue of random walk. We study its recurrence and transience properties on Z^d for the initial configuration of all rotors aligned. If n particles in turn perform rotor walks starting from the origin, we show that the number that escape (i.e., never return to the origin) is of order n in dimensions d>=3, and of order n/log(n) in dimension 2.
Minimum-Weight Edge Discriminator in Hypergraphs
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, Vol. 21(3), #P3.18, 2014 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we introduce the concept of minimum-weight edge-discriminators in hypergraphs, and study its various properties. For a hypergraph $\mathcal H=(\mathcal V, \mathcal E)$, a function $λ: \mathcal V\rightarrow \mathbb Z^{+}\cup\{0\}$ is said to be an {\it edge-discriminator} on $\mathcal H$ if $\sum_{v\in E_i}{λ(v)}>0$, for all hyperedges $E_i\in \mathcal E$, and $\sum_{v\in E_i}{λ(v)}\ne \sum_{v\in E_j}{λ(v)}$, for every two distinct hyperedges $E_i, E_j \in \mathcal E$. An {\it optimal edge-discriminator} on $\mathcal H$, to be denoted by $λ_\mathcal H$, is an edge-discriminator on $\mathcal H$ satisfying $\sum_{v\in \mathcal V}λ_\mathcal H (v)=\min_λ\sum_{v\in \mathcal V}{λ(v)}$, where the minimum is taken over all edge-discriminators on $\mathcal H$. We prove that any hypergraph $\mathcal H=(\mathcal V, \mathcal E)$, with $|\mathcal E|=n$, satisfies $\sum_{v\in \mathcal V} λ_\mathcal H(v)\leq n(n+1)/2$, and equality holds if and only if the elements of $\mathcal E$ are mutually disjoint. For $r$-uniform hypergraphs $\mathcal H=(\mathcal V, \mathcal E)$, it follows from results on Sidon sequences that $\sum_{v\in \mathcal V}λ_{\mathcal H}(v)\leq |\mathcal V|^{r+1}+o(|\mathcal V|^{r+1})$, and the bound is attained up to a constant factor by the complete $r$-uniform hypergraph. Next, we construct optimal edge-discriminators for some special hypergraphs, which include paths, cycles, and complete $r$-partite hypergraphs. Finally, we show that no optimal edge-discriminator on any hypergraph $\mathcal H=(\mathcal V, \mathcal E)$, with $|\mathcal E|=n (\geq 3)$, satisfies $\sum_{v\in \mathcal V} λ_\mathcal H (v)=n(n+1)/2-1$, which, in turn, raises many other interesting combinatorial questions.
