Community detection in the sparse hypergraph stochastic block model
Published in Random Struct Alg. 2021, 59(3), 407-463 • View PublicationBIB
We consider the community detection problem in sparse random hypergraphs. Angelini et al. (2015) conjectured the existence of a sharp threshold on model parameters for community detection in sparse hypergraphs generated by a hypergraph stochastic block model. We solve the positive part of the conjecture for the case of two blocks: above the threshold, there is a spectral algorithm which asymptotically almost surely constructs a partition of the hypergraph correlated with the true partition. Our method is a generalization to random hypergraphs of the method developed by Massoulié (2014) for sparse random graphs.

Twin peaks

We study random labelings of graphs conditioned on a small number (typically one or two) peaks, i.e., local maxima. We show that the boundaries of level sets of a random labeling of a square with a single peak have dimension 2, in a suitable asymptotic sense. The gradient line of a random labeling of a long ladder graph conditioned on a single peak consists mostly of straight line segments. We show that for some tree-graphs, if a random labeling is conditioned on exactly two peaks then the peaks can be very close to each other. We also study random labelings of regular trees conditioned on having exactly two peaks. Our results suggest that the top peak is likely to be at the root and the second peak is equally likely, more or less, to be any vertex not adjacent to the root.

The Random Transposition Dynamics on Random Regular Graphs and the Gaussian Free Field

A single permutation, seen as union of disjoint cycles, represents a regular graph of degree two. Consider $d$ many independent random permutations and superimpose their graph structures. It is a common model of a random regular (multi-) graph of degree $2d$. We consider the following dynamics. The dimension (i.e. size) of each permutation grows by coupled Chinese Restaurant Processes, while in time each permutation evolves according to the random transposition chain. Asymptotically in the size of the graph one observes a remarkable evolution of short cycles and linear eigenvalue statistics in dimension and time. In dimension, it was shown by Johnson and Pal (2014) that cycle counts are described by a Poisson field of Yule processes. Here, we give a Poisson random surface description in dimension and time of the limiting cycle counts for every $d$. As $d$ grows to infinity, the fluctuation of the limiting cycle counts, across dimension, converges to the Gaussian Free Field. In time this field is preserved by a stationary Gaussian dynamics. The laws of these processes are similar to eigenvalue fluctuations of the minor process of a real symmetric Wigner matrix whose coordinates evolve as i.i.d. stationary stochastic processes.

Cycles and eigenvalues of sequentially growing random regular graphs

Consider the sum of $d$ many i.i.d. random permutation matrices on $n$ labels along with their transposes. The resulting matrix is the adjacency matrix of a random regular (multi)-graph of degree $2d$ on $n$ vertices. It is known that the distribution of smooth linear eigenvalue statistics of this matrix is given asymptotically by sums of Poisson random variables. This is in contrast with Gaussian fluctuation of similar quantities in the case of Wigner matrices. It is also known that for Wigner matrices the joint fluctuation of linear eigenvalue statistics across minors of growing sizes can be expressed in terms of the Gaussian Free Field (GFF). In this article, we explore joint asymptotic (in $n$) fluctuation for a coupling of all random regular graphs of various degrees obtained by growing each component permutation according to the Chinese Restaurant Process. Our primary result is that the corresponding eigenvalue statistics can be expressed in terms of a family of independent Yule processes with immigration. These processes track the evolution of short cycles in the graph. If we now take $d$ to infinity, certain GFF-like properties emerge.

Brownian approximation to counting graphs

Let C(n,k) denote the number of connected graphs with n labeled vertices and n+k-1 edges. For any sequence (k_n), the limit of C(n,k_n) as n tends to infinity is known. It has been observed that, if k_n=o(\sqrt{n}), this limit is asymptotically equal to the $k_n$th moment of the area under the standard Brownian excursion. These moments have been computed in the literature via independent methods. In this article we show why this is true for k_n=o(\sqrt[3]{n}) starting from an observation made by Joel Spencer. The elementary argument uses a result about strong embedding of the Uniform empirical process in the Brownian bridge proved by Komlos, Major, and Tusnady.
Functional limit theorems for random regular graphs
Published in Probab. Theory Related Fields, 156(3-4):921-975, 2013 • View PublicationBIB
Consider d uniformly random permutation matrices on n labels. Consider the sum of these matrices along with their transposes. The total can be interpreted as the adjacency matrix of a random regular graph of degree 2d on n vertices. We consider limit theorems for various combinatorial and analytical properties of this graph (or the matrix) as n grows to infinity, either when d is kept fixed or grows slowly with n. In a suitable weak convergence framework, we prove that the (finite but growing in length) sequences of the number of short cycles and of cyclically non-backtracking walks converge to distributional limits. We estimate the total variation distance from the limit using Stein's method. As an application of these results we derive limits of linear functionals of the eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix. A key step in this latter derivation is an extension of the Kahn-Szemerédi argument for estimating the second largest eigenvalue for all values of d and n.

Sparse regular random graphs: Spectral density and eigenvectors
Published in Annals of Probability 2012, Vol. 40, No. 5, 2197-2235 • View PublicationBIB
We examine the empirical distribution of the eigenvalues and the eigenvectors of adjacency matrices of sparse regular random graphs. We find that when the degree sequence of the graph slowly increases to infinity with the number of vertices, the empirical spectral distribution converges to the semicircle law. Moreover, we prove concentration estimates on the number of eigenvalues over progressively smaller intervals. We also show that, with high probability, all the eigenvectors are delocalized.

A combinatorial analysis of interacting diffusions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider a particular class of n-dimensional homogeneous diffusions all of which have an identity diffusion matrix and a drift function that is piecewise constant and scale invariant. Abstract stochastic calculus immediately gives us general results about existence and uniqueness in law and invariant probability distributions when they exist. These invariant distributions are probability measures on the $n$-dimensional space and can be extremely resistant to a more detailed understanding. To have a better analysis, we construct a polyhedra such that the inward normal at its surface is given by the drift function and show that the finer structures of the invariant probability measure is intertwined with the geometry of the polyhedra. We show that several natural interacting Brownian particle models can thus be analyzed by studying the combinatorial fan generated by the drift function, particularly when these are simplicial. This is the case when the polyhedra is a polytope that is invariant under a Coxeter group action, which leads to an explicit description of the invariant measures in terms of iid Exponential random variables. Another class of examples is furnished by interactions indexed by weighted graphs all of which generate simplicial polytopes with $n !$ faces. We show that the proportion of volume contained in each component simplex corresponds to a probability distribution on the group of permutations, some of which have surprising connections with the classical urn models.
