Magnitude homology and Euler characteristics of directed acyclic graphs
We develop a scalable approach to computing the magnitude homology Euler characteristic for directed acyclic graphs based on decategorification. Along with motivating mathematical results and some simple controlled examples, we deploy the Euler characteristic in a proof of concept application to the dynamic analysis of multilayer perceptrons, recovering class-discriminative structure while holding simpler subgraph properties fixed.

Magnitude and Topological Entropy of Digraphs
Published in EPTCS 380, 2023, pp. 254-267 • View PublicationBIB
Magnitude and (co)weightings are quite general constructions in enriched categories, yet they have been developed almost exclusively in the context of Lawvere metric spaces. We construct a meaningful notion of magnitude for flow graphs based on the observation that topological entropy provides a suitable map into the max-plus semiring, and we outline its utility. Subsequently, we identify a separate point of contact between magnitude and topological entropy in digraphs that yields an analogue of volume entropy for geodesic flows. Finally, we sketch the utility of this construction for feature engineering in downstream applications with generic digraphs.
Topology in cyber research

We give an idiosyncratic overview of applications of topology to cyber research, spanning the analysis of variables/assignments and control flow in computer programs, a brief sketch of topological data analysis in one dimension, and the use of sheaves to analyze wireless networks. The text is from a chapter in the forthcoming book Mathematics in Cyber Research, to be published by Taylor and Francis.

Path abstraction
Given the set of paths through a digraph, the result of uniformly deleting some vertices and identifying others along each path is coherent in such a way as to yield the set of paths through another digraph, called a \emph{path abstraction} of the original digraph. The construction of path abstractions is detailed and relevant basic results are established; generalizations are also discussed. Connections with random digraphs are also illustrated.

The multiresolution analysis of flow graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce and prove basic results about several graph-theoretic notions relevant to the multiresolution analysis of flow graphs that represent the transfer of control in computer programs. We take a category-theoretical viewpoint to demonstrate that our definitions are natural and to motivate particular incarnations of related constructions.

De Bruijn entropy and string similarity
We introduce the notion of de Bruijn entropy of an Eulerian quiver and show how the corresponding relative entropy can be applied to practical string similarity problems. This approach explicitly links the combinatorial and information-theoretical properties of words and its performance is superior to edit distances in many respects and competitive in most others. The computational complexity of our current implementation is parametrically tunable between linear and cubic, and we outline how an optimized linear algebra subroutine can reduce the cubic complexity to approximately linear. Numerous examples are provided, including a realistic application to molecular phylogenetics.
