A large deviation principle for block models
Published • View PublicationBIB
We initiate a study of large deviations for block model random graphs in the dense regime. Following Chatterjee-Varadhan(2011), we establish an LDP for dense block models, viewed as random graphons. As an application of our result, we study upper tail large deviations for homomorphism densities of regular graphs. We identify the existence of a "symmetric" phase, where the graph, conditioned on the rare event, looks like a block model with the same block sizes as the generating graphon. In specific examples, we also identify the existence of a "symmetry breaking" regime, where the conditional structure is not a block model with compatible dimensions. This identifies a "reentrant phase transition" phenomenon for this problem -- analogous to one established for Erdos-Renyi random graphs (Chatterjee-Dey(2010), Chatterjee-Varadhan(2011)). Finally, extending the analysis of Lubetzky-Zhao(2015), we identify the precise boundary between the symmetry and symmetry breaking regime for homomorphism densities of regular graphs and the operator norm on Erdos-Renyi bipartite graphs.

We study an urn process with two urns, initialized with a ball each. Balls are added sequentially, the urn being chosen independently with probability proportional to the $α^{th}$ power $(α>1)$ of the existing number of balls. We study the (rare) event that the urn compositions are balanced after the addition of $2n-2$ new balls. We derive precise asymptotics of the probability of this event by embedding the process in continuous time. Quite surprisingly, a fine control on this probability may be leveraged to derive a lower tail Large Deviation Principle (LDP) for $L = \sum_{i=1}^{n} \frac{S_i^2}{i^2}$, where $\{S_n : n \geq 0\}$ is a simple symmetric random walk started at zero. We provide an alternate proof of the LDP via coupling to Brownian motion, and subsequent derivation of the LDP for a continuous time analogue of $L$. Finally, we turn our attention back to the urn process conditioned to be balanced, and provide a functional limit law describing the trajectory of the urn process.

On the unbalanced cut problem and the generalized Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model

We establish a strict asymptotic inequality between a class of graph partition problems on the sparse End\H{o]s-Rényi and random regular graph ensembles with the same average degree. Along the way, we establish a variational representation for the ground state energy for generalized mixed $p$-spin glasses and derive strict comparison inequalities for such models as the alphabet changes.

A connection between MAX $κ$-CUT and the inhomogeneous Potts spin glass in the large degree limit

We study the asymptotic behavior of the Max $κ$-cut on a family of sparse, inhomogeneous random graphs. In the large degree limit, the leading term is a variational problem, involving the ground state of a constrained inhomogeneous Potts spin glass. We derive a Parisi type formula for the free energy of this model, with possible constraints on the proportions, and derive the limiting ground state energy by a suitable zero temperature limit.

Phase transitions of extremal cuts for the configuration model
Published in Electron.J.Probab. 22 1 (2017) • View PublicationBIB
The $k$-section width and the Max-Cut for the configuration model are shown to exhibit phase transitions according to the values of certain parameters of the asymptotic degree distribution. These transitions mirror those observed on Erdős-Rényi random graphs, established by Luczak and McDiarmid (2001), and Coppersmith et al. (2004), respectively.

Optimization on Sparse Random Hypergraphs and Spin Glasses

We establish that in the large degree limit, the value of certain optimization problems on sparse random hypergraphs is determined by an appropriate Gaussian optimization problem. This approach was initiated in Dembo et. al.(2016) for extremal cuts of graphs. The usefulness of this technique is further illustrated by deriving the optimal value for Max $q$-cut on Erdős-Rényi and random regular graphs, Max XORSAT on Erdős-Rényi hypergraphs, and the min-bisection for the Stochastic Block Model.

Extremal Cuts of Sparse Random Graphs

For Erdős-Rényi random graphs with average degree $γ$, and uniformly random $γ$-regular graph on $n$ vertices, we prove that with high probability the size of both the Max-Cut and maximum bisection are $n\Big(\fracγ{4} + {\sf P}_* \sqrt{\fracγ{4}} + o(\sqrtγ)\Big) + o(n)$ while the size of the minimum bisection is $n\Big(\fracγ{4}-{\sf P}_*\sqrt{\fracγ{4}} + o(\sqrtγ)\Big) + o(n)$. Our derivation relates the free energy of the anti-ferromagnetic Ising model on such graphs to that of the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model, with ${\sf P}_* \approx 0.7632$ standing for the ground state energy of the latter, expressed analytically via Parisi's formula.
