On thin-complete ideals of subsets of groups
Published in Ukr. Math. J. 63 (2011) 741-754 • View PublicationBIB
Given a family $F$ of subsets of a group $G$ we describe the structure of its thin-completion $τ^*(F)$, which is the smallest thin-complete family that contains $I$. A family $F$ of subsets of $G$ is called thin-complete if each $F$-thin subset of $G$ belongs to $F$. A subset $A$ of $G$ is called $F$-thin if for any distinct points $x,y$ of $G$ the intersection $xA\cap yA$ belongs to the family $F$. We prove that the thin-completion of an ideal in an ideal. If $G$ is a countable non-torsion group, then the thin-completion $τ^*(F_G)$ of the ideal $F_G$ of finite subsets of $G$ is coanalytic but not Borel in the power-set $P_G$ of $G$.

Partitions of groups and matroids into independent subsets
Published in Algebra Discrete Math. 10:1 (2010), 1-7 • Search Publication
Can the real line with removed zero be covered by countably many linearly (algebraically) independent subsets over the field of rationals? We use a matroid approach to show that an answer is "Yes" under the Continuum Hypothesis, and "No" under its negation.

Centerpole sets for colorings of Abelian groups
Published in Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics, 34:2 (2011) 267--300 • View PublicationBIB
Given a topological group $G$ we calculate or evaluate the cardinal characteristic $c_k(G)$ (and $c_k^B(G)$) equal to the smallest cardinality of a $k$-centerpole subset $C\subset G$ for (Borel) colorings of $G$. A subset $C\subset G$ of a topological group $G$ is called {\em $k$-centerpole} if for each (Borel) $k$-coloring of $G$ there is an unbounded monochromatic subset $G$, which is symmetric with respect to a point $c\in C$ in the sense that $S=cS^{-1}c$.

Fermat's spiral and the line between Yin and Yang
Published in Amer. Math. Monthly. 117:9 (2010), 786-800 • View PublicationBIB
Let $D$ denote a disk of unit area. We call a subset $A$ of $D$ perfect if it has measure 1/2 and, with respect to any axial symmetry of $D$, the maximal symmetric subset of $A$ has measure 1/4. We call a curve $β$ in $D$ an yin-yang line if $β$ splits $D$ into two congruent perfect sets, $β$ crosses each concentric circle of $D$ twice, $β$ crosses each radius of $D$ once. We prove that Fermat's spiral is a unique yin-yang line in the class of smooth curves algebraic in polar coordinates.

Packing index of subsets in Polish groups
Published in Notre Dame J. Formal Logic 50:4 (2009), 453-468. • View PublicationBIB
For a subset $A$ of a Polish group $G$, we study the (almost) packing index $\ind_P(A)$ (resp. $\Ind_P(A)$) of $A$, equal to the supremum of cardinalities $|S|$ of subsets $S\subset G$ such that the family of shifts $\{xA\}_{x\in S}$ is (almost) disjoint (in the sense that $|xA\cap yA|<|A|$ for any distinct points $x,y\in S$). Subsets $A\subset G$ with small (almost) packing index are small in a geometric sense. We show that $\ind_P(A)\in \IN\cup\{\aleph_0,\cc\}$ for any $σ$-compact subset $A$ of a Polish group. If $A\subset G$ is Borel, then the packing indices $\ind_P(A)$ and $\Ind_P(A)$ cannot take values in the half-interval $[\sq(Π^1_1),\cc)$ where $\sq(Π^1_1)$ is a certain uncountable cardinal that is smaller than $\cc$ in some models of ZFC. In each non-discrete Polish Abelian group $G$ we construct two closed subsets $A,B\subset G$ with $\ind_P(A)=\ind_P(B)=\cc$ and $\Ind_P(A\cup B)=1$ and then apply this result to show that $G$ contains a nowhere dense Haar null subset $C\subset G$ with $\ind_P(C)=\Ind_P(C)=κ$ for any given cardinal number $κ\in[4,\cc]$.
