Let $D$ be a digraph of order $n$ and size $m$ with the property that no out-neighborhood or in-neighborhood of any vertex is acyclic. We show that, if $D$ is strongly connected, then $m\geq 7n/3$, and, if $D$ is strongly $2$-connected, then $m\geq 8n/3$. Both results are best-possible.

For a non-negative integer $k$, a vertex cut in a graph is $k$-degenerate if it induces a $k$-degenerate subgraph. We show that a graph of order $n$ at least $2k+2$ without a $k$-degenerate cut has the size at least $\frac{1}{2}\left(k+Ω\left(\sqrt{k}\right)\right)n$ and that a graph of order $n$ at least $5$ without a $2$-degenerate cut has the size at least $\frac{27n-35}{10}$. For $k\geq 2$, we show that a connected graph $G$ of order $n$ at least $k+6$ and size $m$ at most $\frac{k+3}{2}n+\frac{k-1}{2}$ has a minimum $k$-degenerate cut.

Let $G$ be a $K_4$-free graph of order $n$ and let $k$ be an integer with $0\leq k\leq n$. We show the existence of positive constants $η$ and $ν$ such that $G$ has at most $(4-η)^{(5-η)k-n}(5-η)^{n-(4-η)k}$ maximal independent sets of order $k$ and at most $O\left((12-ν)^{\frac{n}{4}}\right)$ maximal induced bipartite subgraphs.
