Minor-Obstructions for Apex Sub-unicyclic Graphs
A graph is sub-unicyclic if it contains at most one cycle. We also say that a graph $G$ is $k$-apex sub-unicyclic if it can become sub-unicyclic by removing $k$ of its vertices. We identify 29 graphs that are the minor-obstructions of the class of $1$-apex sub-unicyclic graphs, i.e., the set of all minor minimal graphs that do not belong in this class. For bigger values of $k$, we give an exact structural characterization of all the cactus graphs that are minor-obstructions of $k$-apex sub-unicyclic graphs and we enumerate them. This implies that, for every $k$, the class of $k$-apex sub-unicyclic graphs has at least $0.34\cdot k^{-2.5}(6.278)^{k}$ minor-obstructions.
Structure and enumeration of K4-minor-free links and link-diagrams
We study the class L of link-types that admit a K4-minor-free diagram, i.e., they can be projected on the plane so that the resulting graph does not contain any subdivision of K4. We prove that L is the closure of a subclass of torus links under the operation of connected sum. Using this structural result, we enumerate L and subclasses of it, with respect to the minimum number of crossings or edges in a projection of L' in L. Further, we obtain counting formulas and asymptotic estimates for the connected K4-minor-free link-diagrams, minimal K4-minor-free link-diagrams, and K4-minor-free diagrams of the unknot.

Encoding and avoiding 2-connected patterns in polygon dissections and outerplanar graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $Δ=\{ δ_1,δ_2,...,δ_m \} $ be a finite set of 2-connected patterns, i.e. graphs up to vertex relabelling. We study the generating function $D_{Δ}(z,u_1,u_2,...,u_m),$ which counts polygon dissections and marks subgraph copies of $δ_i$ with the variable $u_i$. We prove that this is always algebraic, through an explicit combinatorial decomposition depending on $Δ$. The decomposition also gives a defining system for $D_{Δ}(z,\mathbf{0})$, which encodes polygon dissections that restrict these patterns as subgraphs. In this way, we are able to extract normal limit laws for the patterns when they are encoded, and perform asymptotic enumeration of the resulting classes when they are avoided. The results can be directly transferred in the case of labelled outerplanar graphs. We give examples and compute the relevant constants when the patterns are small cycles or dissections.
