A short proof of a central limit theorem for the order of the giant component and $k$-core
In this note we outline a new and simple approach to proving central limit theorems for various 'global' graph parameters which have robust 'local' approximations, using the Efron--Stein inequality, which relies on a combinatorial analysis of the stability of these approximations under resampling an edge. As an application, we give short proofs of a central limit theorem for the order of the giant component and of the $k$-core for sparse random graphs.
The random $k$-SAT Gibbs uniqueness threshold revisited
We prove that for any $k\geq3$ for clause/variable ratios up to the Gibbs uniqueness threshold of the corresponding Galton-Watson tree, the number of satisfying assignments of random $k$-SAT formulas is given by the `replica symmetric solution' predicted by physics methods [Monasson, Zecchina: Phys. Rev. Lett. (1996)]. Furthermore, while the Gibbs uniqueness threshold is still not known precisely for any $k\geq3$, we derive new lower bounds on this threshold that improve over prior work [Montanari and Shah: SODA (2007)].The improvement is significant particularly for small $k$.
The law of the circumference of sparse binomial random graphs
There has been much interest in the distribution of the circumference, the length of the longest cycle, of a random graph $G(n,p)$ in the sparse regime, when $p = Θ\left(\frac{1}{n}\right)$. Recently, the first author and Frieze established a scaling limit for the circumference in this regime, along the way establishing an alternative 'structural' approximation for this parameter. In this paper, we give a central limit theorem for the circumference in this regime using a novel argument based on the Efron-Stein inequality, which relies on a combinatorial analysis of the effect of resampling edges on this approximation.

On $k$-uniform tight cycles: the Ramsey number for $C_{kn}^{(k)}$ and an approximate Lehel's conjecture
A $k$-uniform tight cycle is a $k$-graph with a cyclic ordering of its vertices such that its edges are precisely the sets of $k$ consecutive vertices in that ordering. We show that, for each $k \geq 3$, the Ramsey number of the $k$-uniform tight cycle on $kn$ vertices is $(1+o(1))(k+1)n$. This is an extension to all uniformities of previous results for $k = 3$ by Haxell, Łuczak, Peng, Rödl, Ruciński, and Skokan and for $k = 4$ by Lo and the author and confirms a special case of a conjecture by the former set of authors. Lehel's conjecture, which was proved by Bessy and Thomassé, states that every red-blue edge-coloured complete graph contains a red cycle and a blue cycle that are vertex-disjoint and together cover all the vertices. We also prove an approximate version of this for $k$-uniform tight cycles. We show that, for every $k \geq 3$, every red-blue edge-coloured complete $k$-graph on $n$ vertices contains a red tight cycle and a blue tight cycle that are vertex-disjoint and together cover $n - o(n)$ vertices.

A note on Hamilton decompositions of even-regular multigraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this note, we prove that every even regular multigraph on $n$ vertices with multiplicity at most $r$ and minimum degree at least $rn/2 + o(n)$ has a Hamilton decomposition. This generalises a result of Vaughan who proved an asymptotic version of the multigraph $1$-factorisation conjecture. We derive our result by proving a more general result which states that dense regular multidigraphs that are robust outexpanders have a Hamilton decomposition. This in turn is derived from the corresponding result of Kühn and Osthus about simple digraphs.

Almost partitioning every $2$-edge-coloured complete $k$-graph into $k$ monochromatic tight cycles
A $k$-uniform tight cycle is a $k$-graph with a cyclic order of its vertices such that every $k$ consecutive vertices from an edge. We show that for $k\geq 3$, every red-blue edge-coloured complete $k$-graph on $n$ vertices contains $k$ vertex-disjoint monochromatic tight cycles that together cover $n - o(n)$ vertices.
Perfect matchings in random sparsifications of Dirac hypergraphs

For all integers $n \geq k > d \geq 1$, let $m_{d}(k,n)$ be the minimum integer $D \geq 0$ such that every $k$-uniform $n$-vertex hypergraph $\mathcal H$ with minimum $d$-degree $δ_{d}(\mathcal H)$ at least $D$ has an optimal matching. For every fixed integer $k \geq 3$, we show that for $n \in k \mathbb{N}$ and $p = Ω(n^{-k+1} \log n)$, if $\mathcal H$ is an $n$-vertex $k$-uniform hypergraph with $δ_{k-1}(\mathcal H) \geq m_{k-1}(k,n)$, then a.a.s.\ its $p$-random subhypergraph $\mathcal H_p$ contains a perfect matching. Moreover, for every fixed integer $d < k$ and $γ> 0$, we show that the same conclusion holds if $\mathcal H$ is an $n$-vertex $k$-uniform hypergraph with $δ_d(\mathcal H) \geq m_{d}(k,n) + γ\binom{n - d}{k - d}$. Both of these results strengthen Johansson, Kahn, and Vu's seminal solution to Shamir's problem and can be viewed as ``robust'' versions of hypergraph Dirac-type results. In addition, we also show that in both cases above, $\mathcal H$ has at least $\exp((1-1/k)n \log n - Θ(n))$ many perfect matchings, which is best possible up to an $\exp(Θ(n))$ factor.

The Ramsey number for 4-uniform tight cycles
Published • View PublicationBIB
A $k$-uniform tight cycle is a $k$-graph with a cyclic ordering of its vertices such that its edges are precisely the sets of $k$ consecutive vertices in that ordering. A $k$-uniform tight path is a $k$-graph obtained by deleting a vertex from a $k$-uniform tight cycle. We prove that the Ramsey number for the $4$-uniform tight cycle on $4n$ vertices is $(5 +o(1))n$. This is asymptotically tight. This result also implies that the Ramsey number for the $4$-uniform tight path on $n$ vertices is $(5/4 + o(1))n$.

$1$-independent percolation on $\mathbb{Z}^2 \times K_n$
Published • View PublicationBIB
A random graph model on a host graph H is said to be 1-independent if for every pair of vertex-disjoint subsets A,B of E(H), the state of edges (absent or present) in A is independent of the state of edges in B. For an infinite connected graph H, the 1-independent critical percolation probability $p_{1,c}(H)$ is the infimum of the p in [0,1] such that every 1-independent random graph model on H in which each edge is present with probability at least p almost surely contains an infinite connected component. Balister and Bollobás observed in 2012 that $p_{1,c}(\mathbb{Z}^d)$ is nonincreasing and tends to a limit in [1/2, 1] as d tends to infinity. They asked for the value of this limit. We make progress towards this question by showing that \[\lim_{n\rightarrow \infty}p_{1,c}(\mathbb{Z}^2\times K_n)=4-2\sqrt{3}=0.5358\ldots \ .\] In fact, we show that the equality above remains true if the sequence of complete graphs $K_n$ is replaced by a sequence of weakly pseudorandom graphs on n vertices with average degree $ω(\log n)$. We conjecture that the equality also remains true if $K_n$ is replaced instead by the n-dimensional hypercube $Q_n$. This latter conjecture would imply the answer to Balister and Bollobás's question is $4-2\sqrt{3}$. Using our results, we are also able to resolve a problem of Day, Hancock and the first author on the emergence of long paths in 1-independent random graph models on $\mathbb{Z}\times K_n$. Finally, we prove some results on component evolution in 1-independent random graphs, and discuss a number of open problems arising from our work that may pave the way for further progress on the question of Balister and Bollobás.

Resilience for tight Hamiltonicity
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that random hypergraphs are asymptotically almost surely resiliently Hamiltonian. Specifically, for any $γ>0$ and $k\ge3$, we show that asymptotically almost surely, every subgraph of the binomial random $k$-uniform hypergraph $G^{(k)}\big(n,n^{γ-1}\big)$ in which all $(k-1)$-sets are contained in at least $\big(\tfrac12+2γ\big)pn$ edges has a tight Hamilton cycle. This is a cyclic ordering of the $n$ vertices such that each consecutive $k$ vertices forms an edge.

Towards Lehel's conjecture for 4-uniform tight cycles
Published • View PublicationBIB
A $k$-uniform tight cycle is a $k$-uniform hypergraph with a cyclic ordering of its vertices such that its edges are all the sets of size $k$ formed by $k$ consecutive vertices in the ordering. We prove that every red-blue edge-coloured $K_n^{(4)}$ contains a red and a blue tight cycle that are vertex-disjoint and together cover $n-o(n)$ vertices. Moreover, we prove that every red-blue edge-coloured $K_n^{(5)}$ contains four monochromatic tight cycles that are vertex-disjoint and together cover $n-o(n)$ vertices.
