Clique decompositions and covers for large graphs
In 1966, Erdős, Goodman, and Pósa showed that every $n$-vertex graph $G$ admits a cover of its edges using at most $\lfloor \frac{n^2}{4}\rfloor$ cliques, with tightness witnessed by the balanced complete bipartite graph. Erdős suggested the following strengthening: every $n$-vertex graph $G$ admits an edge decomposition into cliques with total cost at most $\lfloor \frac{n^2}{4}\rfloor$, where each $i$-clique has cost $i-1$. There is another generalization conjectured by Dau, Milenkovic and Puleo: for every $t\ge4$, every $n$-vertex graph $G$ admits a cover of its $t$-cliques using at most $\prod_{j=0}^{t-1}\left\lfloor\frac{n+j}{t}\right\rfloor$ cliques. Balogh, He, Krueger, Nguyen and Wigal proved asymptotic and fractional versions of these conjectures. We solve both conjectures for large $n$ and identify the equality cases. Our proof of Erdős's conjecture combines linear programming duality and the spanning-forest polytope with a weighted stability form of Mantel's theorem, followed by explicit decomposition algorithms around an almost balanced bipartition. For the $t$-clique-cover conjecture, we combine graph removal lemma and generalized Turán stability with an exact covering construction for graphs close to $T_{n,t}$.
New lower bounds on the non-repetitive chromatic number of some graphs
A graph \( G \) is said to be (vertex) non-repetitively colored if no simple path in \( G \) has a sequence of vertex colors that forms a repetition. Formally, a coloring \( c: V(G) \to \{1, 2, \dots, k\} \) is non-repetitive if, for every path \(\langle v_1, v_2, \dots, v_{2m} \rangle\) in \( G \), the sequence of colors \( c(v_1), c(v_2), \dots, c(v_{2m}) \) is not of the form \( ww \), where \( w \) is a sequence of \( m \) colors. The minimum number of colors required for such a coloring is called the \emph{non-repetitive chromatic number} of \(G\), denoted by \(π(G)\). In this paper, we primarily prove that \(π(P \square P) \ge 6\) and \(π(P \boxtimes P) \ge 9\), where \( P \square P \) and \( P \boxtimes P \) are the Cartesian product and the strong product of two infinite paths, respectively. This improves upon the previous best lower bounds.
Maximum in-general-position set in a random subset of $\mathbb{F}^d_q$
Let $α(\mathbb{F}_q^{d},p)$ be the maximum possible size of a point set in general position in a $p$-random subset of $\mathbb{F}_q^d$. We determine the order of magnitude of $α(\mathbb{F}_q^{d},p)$ up to a polylogarithmic factor by proving the balanced supersaturation conjecture of Balogh and Luo. Our result also resolves a conjecture implicitly posed by the first author, Liu, the second author and Zeng. In the course of our proof, we establish a lemma that demonstrates a ``structure vs. randomness'' phenomenon for point sets in finite-field linear spaces, which may be of independent interest.
The Betti Number of the Independence Complex of Ternary Graphs

Given a graph $G$, the \textit{independence complex} $I(G)$ is the simplicial complex whose faces are the independent sets of $V(G)$. Let $\tilde{b}_i$ denote the $i$-th reduced Betti number of $I(G)$, and let $b(G)$ denote the sum of $\tilde{b}_i(G)$'s. A graph is ternary if it does not contain induced cycles with length divisible by three. G. Kalai and K. Meshulam conjectured that $b(G)\le 1$ whenever $G$ is ternary. We prove this conjecture. This extends a recent results proved by Chudnovsky, Scott, Seymour and Spirkl that for any ternary graph $G$, the number of independent sets with even cardinality and the independent sets with odd cardinality differ by at most 1.
