Extremal number of edges in graphs without homeomorphically irreducible spanning trees
For integers $k\ge 1$ and $n\ge k+1$, let $\operatorname{ex}^{\mathrm{HIST}}_k(n)$ denote the maximum number of edges in a $k$-connected graph of order $n$ which contains no homeomorphically irreducible spanning tree (or briefly HIST). We determine these extremal numbers for $k=1$ and $k=2$. More precisely, we prove that $\operatorname{ex}^{\mathrm{HIST}}_1(n)=\binom{n-2}{2}+2$ for $n\ge 9$, with $L_n$ as the unique extremal graph, and that $\operatorname{ex}^{\mathrm{HIST}}_2(n)=\binom{n-3}{2}+4$ for $n\ge 13$, with $B_n$ as the unique extremal graph. This provides a Turán-type extremal result for spanning trees with no vertices of degree two.

The strong fractional choice number of triangle-free planar graphs
Let $a,b$ be positive integers with $a\ge b$. A graph $G$ is $(a,b)$-choosable if, for every assignment of lists $L(v)$ of size $a$ to the vertices of $G$, there exists a choice of subsets $C(v)\subseteq L(v)$ with $|C(v)|=b$ for each $v$ such that $C(u)\cap C(v)=\emptyset$ whenever $uv\in E(G)$. We show that every triangle-free planar graph is $(15m,4m)$-choosable for any positive integer $m$. As an immediate consequence, the strong fractional choice number of triangle-free planar graphs is at most $15/4$. This appears to be the first non-trivial upper bound on this parameter for this class of graphs. In particular, the case $m=1$ answers affirmatively a question posed by Jiang and Zhu in [J.~Combin.\ Theory Ser.~B, 2019].

Rainbow spanning structures in strongly edge-colored graphs
An edge-colored graph is a graph in which each edge is assigned a color. Such a graph is called strongly edge-colored if each color class forms an induced matching, and called rainbow if all edges receive pairwise distinct colors. In this paper, by establishing a connection with $μn$-bounded graphs, we prove that for all sufficiently large integers $n$, every strongly edge-colored graph $G$ on $n$ vertices with minimum degree at least $\frac{n+1}{2}$ contains a rainbow Hamilton cycle. We also characterize all strongly edge-colored graphs on $n$ vertices with minimum degree exactly $\frac{n}{2}$ that do not contain a rainbow Hamilton cycle. As an application, we determine the optimal minimum degree conditions for the existence of rainbow Hamilton paths and rainbow perfect matchings in strongly edge-colored graphs. Together, these results verify three conjectures concerning strongly edge-colored graphs for sufficiently large $n$.
Fractional balanced chromatic number of signed subcubic graphs
A signed graph is a pair $(G,σ)$, where $G$ is a graph and $σ: E(G)\rightarrow \{-, +\}$, called signature, is an assignment of signs to the edges. Given a signed graph $(G,σ)$ with no negative loops, a balanced $(p,q)$-coloring of $(G,σ)$ is an assignment $f$ of $q$ colors to each vertex from a pool of $p$ colors such that each color class induces a balanced subgraph, i.e., no negative cycles. Let $(K_4,-)$ be the signed graph on $K_4$ with all edges being negative. In this work, we show that every signed (simple) subcubic graph admits a balanced $(5,3)$-coloring except for $(K_4,-)$ and signed graphs switching equivalent to it. For this particular signed graph the best balanced colorings are $(2p,p)$-colorings.

A neighborhood union condition for the existence of a spanning tree without degree $2$ vertices
For a connected graph $G$, a spanning tree $T$ of $G$ is called a homeomorphically irreducible spanning tree (HIST) if $T$ has no vertices of degree $2$. In this paper, we show that if $G$ is a graph of order $n\ge 270$ and $|N(u)\cup N(v)|\geq\frac{n-1}{2}$ holds for every pair of nonadjacent vertices $u$ and $v$ in $G$, then $G$ has a HIST, unless $G$ belongs to three exceptional families of graphs or $G$ has a cut-vertex of degree $2$. This result improves the latest conclusion, due to Ito and Tsuchiya, that a HIST in $G$ can be guaranteed if $d(u)+d(v)\geq n-1$ holds for every pair of nonadjacent vertices $u$ and $v$ in $G$.

The fractional chromatic number of $K_Δ$-free graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a simple graph $G$, let $χ_f(G)$ be the fractional chromatic number of $G$. In this paper, we aim to establish upper bounds on $χ_f(G)$ for those graphs $G$ with restrictions on the clique number. Namely, we prove that for $Δ\geq 4$, if $G$ has maximum degree at most $Δ$ and is $K_Δ$-free, then $χ_f(G) \leq Δ-\tfrac{1}{8}$ unless $G= C^2_8$ or $G = C_5\boxtimes K_2$. This im proves the result in [King, Lu, and Peng, SIAM J. Discrete Math., 26(2) (2012), pp. 452-471] for $Δ\geq 4$ and the result in [Katherine and King, SIAM J.Discrete Math., 27(2) (2013), pp. 1184-1208] for $Δ\in \{6,7,8\}$.

Circular Coloring and Fractional Coloring in Planar Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the following Steinberg-type problem on circular coloring: for an odd integer $k\ge 3$, what is the smallest number $f(k)$ such that every planar graph of girth $k$ without cycles of length from $k+1$ to $f(k)$ admits a homomorphism to the odd cycle $C_k$ (or equivalently, is circular $(k,\frac{k-1}{2})$-colorable). Known results and counterexamples on Steinberg's Conjecture indicate that $f(3)\in\{6,7\}$. In this paper, we show that $f(k)$ exists if and only if $k$ is an odd prime. Moreover, we prove that for any prime $p\ge 5$, $$p^2-\frac{5}{2}p+\frac{3}{2}\le f(p)\le 2p^2+2p-5.$$ We conjecture that $f(p)\le p^2-2p$, and observe that the truth of this conjecture implies Jaeger's conjecture that every planar graph of girth $2p-2$ has a homomorphism to $C_p$ for any prime $p\ge 5$. Supporting this conjecture, we prove a related fractional coloring result that every planar graph of girth $k$ without cycles of length from $k+1$ to $\lfloor\frac{22k}{3}\rfloor$ is fractional $(k:\frac{k-1}{2})$-colorable for any odd integer $k\ge 5$.

Fractional coloring of planar graphs of girth five
A graph G is (a:b)-colorable if there exists an assignment of b-element subsets of {1,...,a} to vertices of G such that sets assigned to adjacent vertices are disjoint. We first show that for every triangle-free planar graph G and a vertex x of G, the graph G has a set coloring phi by subsets of {1,...,6} such that |phi(v)|>=2 for each vertex v of G and |phi(x)|=3. As a corollary, every triangle-free planar graph on n vertices is (6n:2n+1)-colorable. We further use this result to prove that for every Delta, there exists a constant M_Delta such that every planar graph G of girth at least five and maximum degree Delta is (6M_Delta:2M_Delta+1)-colorable. Consequently, planar graphs of girth at least five with bounded maximum degree Delta have fractional chromatic number at most 3-3/(2M_Delta+1).

The $g$-good neighbor conditional diagnosability of locally exchanged twisted cubes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Connectivity and diagnosability are important parameters in measuring the fault tolerance and reliability of interconnection networks. The $R^g$-vertex-connectivity of a connected graph $G$ is the minimum cardinality of a faulty set $X\subseteq V(G)$ such that $G-X$ is disconnected and every fault-free vertex has at least $g$ fault-free neighbors. The $g$-good-neighbor conditional diagnosability is defined as the maximum cardinality of a $g$-good-neighbor conditional faulty set that the system can guarantee to identify. The interconnection network considered here is the locally exchanged twisted cube $LeTQ(s,t)$. For $1\leq s\leq t$ and $0\leq g\leq s$, we first determine the $R^g$-vertex-connectivity of $LeTQ(s,t)$, then establish the $g$-good neighbor conditional diagnosability of $LeTQ(s,t)$ under the PMC model and MM$^*$ model, respectively.
A $4$-choosable graph that is not $(8:2)$-choosable
Published in Advances in Combinatorics, 2019:5 • View PublicationBIB
In 1980, Erdős, Rubin and Taylor asked whether for all positive integers $a$, $b$, and $m$, every $(a:b)$-choosable graph is also $(am:bm)$-choosable. We provide a negative answer by exhibiting a $4$-choosable graph that is not $(8:2)$-choosable.

(3a:a)-list-colorability of embedded graphs of girth at least five
A graph G is list (b:a)-colorable if for every assignment of lists of size b to vertices of G, there exists a choice of an a-element subset of the list at each vertex such that the subsets chosen at adjacent vertices are disjoint. We prove that for every positive integer a, the family of minimal obstructions of girth at least five to list (3a:a)-colorability is strongly hyperbolic, in the sense of the hyperbolicity theory developed by Postle and Thomas. This has a number of consequences, e.g., that if a graph of girth at least five and Euler genus g is not list (3a:a)-colorable, then G contains a subgraph with O(g) vertices which is not list (3a:a) colorable.

Structure connectivity and substructure connectivity of twisted hypercubes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a graph and $T$ a certain connected subgraph of $G$. The $T$-structure connectivity $κ(G; T)$ (or resp., $T$-substructure connectivity $κ^{s}(G; T)$) of $G$ is the minimum number of a set of subgraphs $\mathcal{F}=\{T_{1}, T_{2}, \ldots, T_{m}\}$ (or resp., $\mathcal{F}=\{T^{'}_{1}, T^{'}_{2}, \ldots, T^{'}_{m}\}$) such that $T_{i}$ is isomorphic to $T$ (or resp., $T^{'}_{i}$ is a connected subgraph of $T$) for every $1\leq i \leq m$, and $\mathcal{F}$'s removal will disconnect $G$. The twisted hypercube $H_{n}$ is a new variant of hypercubes with asymptotically optimal diameter introduced by X.D. Zhu. In this paper, we will determine both $κ(H_{n}; T)$ and $κ^{s}(H_{n}; T)$ for $T\in\{K_{1,r}, P_{k}\}$, respectively, where $3\leq r\leq 4$ and $1 \leq k \leq n$.

Planar graphs without cycles of length 4 or 5 are (11:3)-colorable
A graph G is (a:b)-colorable if there exists an assignment of b-element subsets of {1,...,a} to vertices of G such that sets assigned to adjacent vertices are disjoint. We show that every planar graph without cycles of length 4 or 5 is (11:3)-colorable, a weakening of recently disproved Steinberg's conjecture. In particular, each such graph with n vertices has an independent set of size at least 3n/11.
