A Cap-Move Reformulation of Ling's Proof of Samuels' Conjecture
Let $0\le μ_1\le μ_2 \le \cdots \le μ_n$ and $δ> 0$. Samuels' conjecture claims that if $X_1,\dots,X_n$ are independent non-negative random variables with $\mathbb{E}[X_i] = μ_i$, then $$
\mathbb{P}\left( \sum_{i=1}^n X_i < δ+ \sum_{i=1}^n μ_i \right) \ge \min_{1\le i\le n} \prod_{j=i}^n \left(1-\frac{μ_j}{δ+ \sum_{k=i}^n μ_k}\right).$$ This conjecture was recently proved by Ling. In this note, we provide an alternative presentation of Ling's proof via an operation called the \emph{cap move}. This proof works directly with finitely supported distributions and avoids the reduction to the Bernoulli case.
Sharp small-deviation inequalities for sums of independent nonnegative random variables
Let $(X_1,\ldots,X_n)$ be independent nonnegative random variables with $\mathbb{E} X_i\le1$, and write $S=\sum_iX_i$. For $δ>0$, we prove that \[
\mathbb{P}\left(S<\mathbb{E} S+δ\right)\ge b_{n,δ}, \] where $b_{n,δ}=δ(n/(n+δ))^n$ for $0<δ<1$ and $b_{n,δ}=(1-1/(n+δ))^n$ for $δ\ge1$. The bound is sharp for every $n$ and $δ\ge 1$. In particular, since $b_{n,δ} \ge e^{-1}$ for $δ\ge 1$, our result proves Feige's conjecture [Feige, 2004] in the affirmative for $δ\ge 1$.
The proof is found by ChatGPT 5.6 Pro. It combines the exact Dirichlet calibration theorem of Vlassis and Thomas [Vlassis and Thomas, 2026], which resolves Gaffke's conjecture in statistics, with results in convex geometry including Grünbaum's centroid theorem [Grünbaum, 1960] and its generalization by Letwin and Yaskin [Letwin and Yaskin, 2024].
Elementary Symmetric Polynomial Inequalities for Centered Vectors and Matrices
We prove new inequalities for elementary symmetric polynomials (ESPs) for vectors that sum to zero, and for square matrices with zero row and column sums. We apply these results to obtain a unified upper bound on the mean-field approximation guarantee for permutation mixtures, as well as a sharp $χ^2$ version of the de Finetti theorem for finite sequences over a small alphabet. The main proof ideas were developed by the GPT-5.5 Pro model.
Optimal Communication Rates and Combinatorial Properties for Common Randomness Generation

We study common randomness generation problems where $n$ players aim to generate same sequences of random coin flips where some subsets of the players share an independent common coin which can be tossed multiple times, and there is a publicly seen blackboard through which the players communicate with each other. We provide a tight representation of the optimal communication rates via linear programming, and more importantly, propose explicit algorithms for the optimal distributed simulation for a wide class of hypergraphs. In particular, the optimal communication rate in complete hypergraphs is still achievable in sparser hypergraphs containing a path-connected cycle-free cluster of topologically connected components. Some key steps in analyzing the upper bounds rely on two different definitions of connectivity in hypergraphs, which may be of independent interest.
Expectation of the Largest bet size in Labouchere System

For Labouchere system with winning probability $p$ at each coup, we prove that the expectation of the largest bet size under any initial list is finite if $p>\frac{1}{2}$, and is infinite if $p\le \frac{1}{2}$, solving the open conjecture in Grimmett and Stirzaker (2001). The same result holds for a general family of betting systems, and the proof builds upon a recursive representation of the optimal betting system in the larger family.
