Secret Sharing on Superconcentrator
Using information inequalities, we prove any unrestricted arithmetic circuits computing the shares of any $(t, n)$-threshold secret sharing scheme must satisfy some superconcentrator-like connection properties. In the reverse direction, we prove, when the underlying field is large enough, any graph satisfying these connection properties can be turned into a linear arithmetic circuit computing the shares of a $(t, n)$-threshold secret sharing scheme. Specifically, $n$ shares can be computed by a linear arithmetic circuits with $O(n)$ wires in depth $O(α(t, n))$, where $α(t, n)$ is the two-parameter version of the inverse Ackermann function. For example, when $n \ge t^{2.5}$, depth $2$ would be enough; when $n \ge t \log^{2.5} t$, depth 3 would be enough.

On the Uniqueness of Balanced Complex Orthogonal Design
Published • View PublicationBIB
Complex orthogonal designs (CODs) play a crucial role in the construction of space-time block codes. Their real analog, real orthogonal designs (or equivalently, sum of squares composition formula) have a long history. Adams et al. (2011) introduced the concept of balanced complex orthogonal designs (BCODs) to address practical considerations. BCODs have a constant code rate of $1/2$ and a minimum decoding delay of $2^m$, where $2m$ is the number of columns. Understanding the structure of BCODs helps design space-time block codes, and it is also fascinating in its own right. We prove, when the number of columns is fixed, all (indecomposable) balanced complex orthogonal designs (BCODs) have the same parameters $[2^m, 2m, 2^{m-1}]$, and moreover, they are all equivalent.

Certificate complexity and symmetry of nested canalizing functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Boolean nested canalizing functions (NCFs) have important applications in molecular regulatory networks, engineering and computer science. In this paper, we study their certificate complexity. For both Boolean values $b\in\{0,1\}$, we obtain a formula for $b$-certificate complexity and consequently, we develop a direct proof of the certificate complexity formula of an NCF. Symmetry is another interesting property of Boolean functions and we significantly simplify the proofs of some recent theorems about partial symmetry of NCFs. We also describe the algebraic normal form of $s$-symmetric NCFs. We obtain the general formula of the cardinality of the set of $n$-variable $s$-symmetric Boolean NCFs for $s=1,\dots,n$. In particular, we enumerate the strongly asymmetric Boolean NCFs.

Sensitivity and block sensitivity of nested canalyzing function
Based on a recent characterization of nested canalyzing function (NCF), we obtain the formula of the sensitivity of any NCF. Hence we find that any sensitivity of NCF is between $\frac{n+1}{2}$ and $n$. Both lower and upper bounds are tight. We prove that the block sensitivity, hence the $l$-block sensitivity, is same to the sensitivity. It is well known that monotone function also has this property. We eventually find all the functions which are both monotone and nested canalyzing (MNCF). The cardinality of all the MNCF is also provided.
Multi-state Canalyzing Functions over Finite Fields
In this paper, we extend the definition of Boolean canalyzing functions to the canalyzing functions over finite field $\mathbb{F}_{q}$, where $q$ is a power of a prime. We obtain the characterization of all the eight classes of such functions as well as their cardinality. When $q=2$, we obtain a combinatorial identity by equating our result to the formula in \cite{Win}. Finally, for a better understanding to the magnitude, we obtain the asymptotes for all the eight cardinalities as either $n\to\infty$ or $q\to\infty$.

Balanced Symmetric Functions over $GF(p)$
Published • View PublicationBIB
Under mild conditions on $n,p$, we give a lower bound on the number of $n$-variable balanced symmetric polynomials over finite fields $GF(p)$, where $p$ is a prime number. The existence of nonlinear balanced symmetric polynomials is an immediate corollary of this bound. Furthermore, we conjecture that $X(2^t,2^{t+1}l-1)$ are the only nonlinear balanced elementary symmetric polynomials over GF(2), where $X(d,n)=\sum_{i_1<i_2<...<i_d}x_{i_1} x_{i_2}... x_{i_d}$, and we prove various results in support of this conjecture.
