One-factorizations of complete multipartite graphs with distance constraints
The present paper considers multipartite graphs from the perspective of design theory and coding theory. A one-factor $F$ of the complete multipartite graph $K_{n\times g}$ (with $n$ parts of size $g$) gives rise to a $(g+1)$-ary code ${\cal C}$ of length $n$ and constant weight two. Furthermore, if the one-factor $F$ meets a certain constraint, then ${\cal C}$ becomes an optimal code with minimum distance three. We initiate the study of one-factorizations of complete multipartite graphs subject to distance constraints. The problem of decomposing $K_{n\times g}$ into the largest subgraphs with minimum distance three is investigated. It is proved that, for $n\le g$, the complete multipartite graph $K_{n\times g}$ can be decomposed into $g^2$ copies of the largest subgraphs with minimum distance three. For even $gn$ with $n>g$, it is proved that the complete multipartite graph $K_{n\times g}$ can be decomposed into $g(n-1)$ one-factors with minimum distance three, leaving a small gap of $n$ (in terms of $g$) to be resolved (If $gn$ is odd when $n>g$, no such decomposition of $K_{n\times g}$ exists).
Tilings of $\mathcal{H}_{q}(n,w)$ with optimal $(n,d,w)_{q}$-codes
The metric space $\mathcal{H}_{q}(n,w)$ is the set of all words of length $n$ with weight $w$ over the alphabet $\mathbb{Z}_{q}$, under the Hamming distance metric. A $q$-ary constant-weight code, as a nonempty subset of $\mathcal{H}_{q}(n,w)$, has always been a fundamental topic in coding theory. This paper investigates the tiling problem of $\mathcal{H}_{q}(n,w)$ with optimal $(n,d,w)_{q}$-codes, simply denoted by $\mathrm{TOC}_{q}(n,d,w)$, meaning a partition of $\mathcal{H}_{q}(n,w)$ into mutually disjoint optimal $q$-ary constant-weight codes with distance $d$. When the distance $d$ is odd, we investigate large sets of generalized Steiner systems. When $d$ is even, we define large sets of generalized maximum H-packings. We present several general construction approaches for generating $\mathrm{TOC}_{q}(n,d,w)$s via $t$-resolvable Steiner systems and almost-regular edge-colorings of complete hypergraphs. For the cases $d=2$ and $d=2w$, we completely resolve the existence problem of $\mathrm{TOC}_{q}(n,d,w)$s for all parameters $q,n$ and $w$. Particularly, we pay attention to tilings for weight three. For binary case and weight three, the existence problem of $\mathrm{TOC}_{2}(n,d,3)$s is totally resolved. For specific alphabet size $q\ge 3$, we obtain many infinite families of $\mathrm{TOC}_{q}(n,d,3)$s for distances $d=3,4,5$.
New Nonuniform Group Divisible Designs and Mixed Steiner Systems
This paper considers two closely related concepts, mixed Steiner system and nonuniform group divisible design (GDD). The distinction between the two concepts is the minimum Hamming distance, which is required for mixed Steiner systems but not required for nonuniform group divisible $t$-designs. In other words, it means that every mixed Steiner system is a nonuniform GDD, but the converse is not true. A new construction for mixed Steiner systems based on orthogonal arrays and resolvable Steiner systems is presented. Some of the new mixed Steiner systems (also GDDs) depend on the existence of Mersenne primes or Fermat primes. New parameters of nonuniform GDDs derived from large sets of H-designs (which are generalizations of GDDs) are presented, and in particular, many nonuniform group divisible $t$-designs with $t > 3$ are introduced (for which only one family was known before). Some GDDs are with $t > 4$, parameters for which no such design was known before.
Steiner Quadruple Systems with Minimum Colorable Derived Designs: Constructions and Applications
An $r$-block-coloring, simply $r$-coloring, of a Steiner triple system $\mathrm{STS}(v)$ is a partition of the block set into $r$ color classes, each color class being a partial parallel class. The chromatic index of $\mathrm{STS}(v)$, denoted by $χ^{\prime}(v)$, is the smallest $r$ for which an $r$-coloring of an $\mathrm{STS}(v)$ exists. A minimum colorable Steiner triple system $\mathrm{mcSTS}(v)$ is an $\mathrm{STS}(v)$ admitting a $χ^{\prime} (v)$-coloring. We generalize the notion of an $\mathrm{RDSQS}$ (a Steiner quadruple system $\mathrm{SQS}$ with resolvable derived designs) to $\mathrm{mcDSQS}$, representing an $\mathrm{SQS}$ whose derived design at every point is minimum colorable. This is motivated from an application in non-binary diameter perfect codes. The purpose of this paper is to display a few recursive constructions to produce $\mathrm{mcDSQS}$s via Steiner systems $\mathrm{S}(3,K,v)$ with certain properties. Among others, a construction for $\mathrm{mcDSQS}$s is developed, which is also new even for $\mathrm{RDSQS}$s; special constructions concentrating only on $\mathrm{mcDSQS}(6n+2)$s are demonstrated as well. As the main results, both a new infinite family of $\mathrm{RDSQS}(6n+4)$s and the first infinite family of $\mathrm{mcDSQS}(6n+2)$s are constructed. To be specific, an $\mathrm{RDSQS}(2^{2m+1}+2)$ and an $\mathrm{mcDSQS}(2\cdot 9^{m}+2)$ are proved to exist, in which the former class gives rise to a new infinite family of large sets of Kirkman triple systems. As applications, the smallest $q$ is determined such that a diameter perfect constant-weight $(n,\frac{1}{4}\tbinom{n}{3},6;4)_{q}$ code exists where $n \in\{ 2\cdot 9^{m}+2:m\geq 1\}\bigcup\{ 2^{2m+1}+2:m\geq 0\}$.
