An exact algorithm for the minimum rank of a graph
The minimum rank of a graph G is the minimum rank over all real symmetric matrices whose off-diagonal sparsity pattern is the same as that of the adjacency matrix of G. In this note we present the first exact algorithm for the minimum rank of an arbitrary graph G. In particular, we use the notion of determinantal rank to transform the minimum rank problem into a system of polynomial equations that can be solved by computational tools from algebraic geometry and commutative algebra. We provide computational results, explore possibilities for improvement, and discuss how the algorithm can be extended to other problems such as finding the minimum positive semidefinite rank of a graph.

In this short note we use the polynomial partitioning lemma to strengthen a recent result of Dvir and Gopi about the number of rich lines in high dimensional Euclidean spaces. Our result shows that if there are sufficiently many rich lines incident to a set of points then large fraction of them must be contained in a hyperplane.
Some planar monomials in characteristic 2

Planar functions over finite fields give rise to finite projective planes and other combinatorial objects. They were originally defined only in odd characteristic, but recently Zhou introduced a definition in even characteristic which yields similar applications. In this paper we show that certain functions over $\mathbb{F}_{2^r}$ are planar, which proves a conjecture of Schmidt and Zhou. The key to our proof is a new result about the $\mathbb{F}_{q^3}$-rational points on the degree-$(q-1)$ Fermat curve $x^{q-1}+y^{q-1}=z^{q-1}$.
