Representation of short distances in structurally sparse graphs
A partial orientation $\vec{H}$ of a graph $G$ is a weak $r$-guidance system if for any two vertices at distance at most $r$ in $G$, there exists a shortest path $P$ between them such that $\vec{H}$ directs all but one edge in $P$ towards this edge. In case $\vec{H}$ has bounded maximum outdegree, this gives an efficient representation of shortest paths of length at most $r$ in $G$. We show that graphs from many natural graph classes admit such weak guidance systems, and study the algorithmic aspects of this notion.
On Comparable Box Dimension
Two boxes in $\mathbb{R}^d$ are comparable if one of them is a subset of a translation of the other one. The comparable box dimension of a graph $G$ is the minimum integer $d$ such that $G$ can be represented as a touching graph of comparable axis-aligned boxes in $\mathbb{R}^d$. We show that proper minor-closed classes have bounded comparable box dimensions and explore further properties of this notion.

Asymptotic dimension of intersection graphs
We show that intersection graphs of compact convex sets in R^n of bounded aspect ratio have asymptotic dimension at most 2n+1. More generally, we show this is the case for intersection graphs of systems of subsets of any metric space of Assouad-Nagata dimension n that satisfy the following condition: For each r,s>0 and every point p, the number of pairwise-disjoint elements of diameter at least s in the system that are at distance at most r from p is bounded by a function of r/s.

Weak diameter coloring of graphs on surfaces
Consider a graph $G$ drawn on a fixed surface, and assign to each vertex a list of colors of size at least two if $G$ is triangle-free and at least three otherwise. We prove that we can give each vertex a color from its list so that each monochromatic connected subgraph has bounded weak diameter (i.e., diameter measured in the metric of the whole graph $G$, not just the subgraph). In case that $G$ has bounded maximum degree, this implies that each connected monochromatic subgraph has bounded size. This solves a problem of Esperet and Joret for planar triangle-free graphs, and extends known results in the general case to the list setting, answering a question of Wood.

Triangle-free planar graphs with at most $64^{n^{0.731}}$ 3-colorings
Thomassen conjectured that triangle-free planar graphs have exponentially many 3-colorings. Recently, he disproved his conjecture by providing examples of such graphs with $n$ vertices and at most $2^{15n/\log_2 n}$ 3-colorings. We improve his construction, giving examples of such graphs with at most $64^{n^{log_{9/2} 3}}<64^{n^{0.731}}$ 3-colorings. We conjecture this exponent is optimal.

Approximation schemes for bounded distance problems on fractionally treewidth-fragile graphs
We give polynomial-time approximation schemes for monotone maximization problems expressible in terms of distances (up to a fixed upper bound) and efficiently solvable in graphs of bounded treewidth. These schemes apply in all fractionally treewidth-fragile graph classes, a property that is true for many natural graph classes with sublinear separators. We also provide quasipolynomial-time approximation schemes for these problems in all classes with sublinear separators.
Weak Coloring Numbers of Intersection Graphs
Weak and strong coloring numbers are generalizations of the degeneracy of a graph, where for each natural number $k$, we seek a vertex ordering such every vertex can (weakly respectively strongly) reach in $k$ steps only few vertices with lower index in the ordering. Both notions capture the sparsity of a graph or a graph class, and have interesting applications in the structural and algorithmic graph theory. Recently, the first author together with McCarty and Norin observed a natural volume-based upper bound for the strong coloring numbers of intersection graphs of well-behaved objects in $\mathbb{R}^d$, such as homothets of a centrally symmetric compact convex object, or comparable axis-aligned boxes. In this paper, we prove upper and lower bounds for the $k$-th weak coloring numbers of these classes of intersection graphs. As a consequence, we describe a natural graph class whose strong coloring numbers are polynomial in $k$, but the weak coloring numbers are exponential. We also observe a surprising difference in terms of the dependence of the weak coloring numbers on the dimension between touching graphs of balls (single-exponential) and hypercubes (double-exponential).

Approximation metatheorems for classes with bounded expansion
We give a number of approximation metatheorems for monotone maximization problems expressible in the first-order logic, in substantially more general settings than the previously known. We obtain * constant-factor approximation algorithm in any class of graphs with bounded expansion, * a QPTAS in any class with strongly sublinear separators, and * a PTAS in any fractionally treewidth-fragile class (which includes all common classes with strongly sublinear separators. Moreover, our tools also give an exact subexponential-time algorithm in any class with strongly sublinear separators.

We prove that a wide range of coloring problems in graphs on surfaces can be resolved by inspecting a finite number of configurations.

Characterization of 4-critical triangle-free toroidal graphs
We give an exact characterization of 3-colorability of triangle-free graphs drawn in the torus, in the form of 186 "templates" (graphs with certain faces filled by arbitrary quadrangulations) such that a graph from this class is not 3-colorable if and only if it contains a subgraph matching one of the templates. As a consequence, we show every triangle-free graph drawn in the torus with edge-width at least six is 3-colorable, a key property used in an efficient 3-colorability algorithm for triangle-free toroidal graphs.

On weighted sublinear separators
Consider a graph G with an assignment of costs to vertices. Even if G and all its subgraphs admit balanced separators of sublinear size, G may only admit a balanced separator of sublinear cost after deleting a small set Z of exceptional vertices. We improve the bound on |Z| from O(log |V(G)|) to O(log log...log |V(G)|), for any fixed number of iterations of the logarithm.

A Thomassen-type method for planar graph recoloring
The reconfiguration graph $R_k(G)$ for the $k$-colorings of a graph $G$ has as vertices all possible $k$-colorings of $G$ and two colorings are adjacent if they differ in the color of exactly one vertex. We use a list coloring technique inspired by results of Thomassen to prove that for a planar graph $G$ with $n$ vertices, $R_{10}(G)$ has diameter at most $8n$, and if $G$ is triangle-free, then $R_7(G)$ has diameter at most $7n$.

An update on reconfiguring $10$-colorings of planar graphs
The reconfiguration graph $R_k(G)$ for the $k$-colorings of a graph $G$ has as vertex set the set of all possible proper $k$-colorings of $G$ and two colorings are adjacent if they differ in the color of exactly one vertex. A result of Bousquet and Perarnau (2016) regarding graphs of bounded degeneracy implies that if $G$ is a planar graph with $n$ vertices, then $R_{12}(G)$ has diameter at most $6n$. We improve on the number of colors, showing that $R_{10}(G)$ has diameter at most $8n$ for every planar graph $G$ with $n$ vertices.

A note on sublinear separators and expansion
For a hereditary class C of graphs, let s_C(n) be the minimum function such that each n-vertex graph in C has a balanced separator of order at most s_C(n), and let nabla_C(r) be the minimum function bounding the expansion of C, in the sense of bounded expansion theory of Nešetřil and Ossona de Mendez. The results of Plotkin, Rao, and Smith (1994) and Esperet and Raymond (2018) imply that if s_C(n)=Theta(n^{1-epsilon}) for some epsilon>0, then nabla_C(r)=Omega(r^{1/(2.epsilon)-1}/polylog r) and nabla_C(r)=O(r^{1/epsilon-1}polylog r). Answering a question of Esperet and Raymond, we show that neither of the exponents can be substantially improved.

It was recently proved that every planar graph is a subgraph of the strong product of a path and a graph with bounded treewidth. This paper surveys generalisations of this result for graphs on surfaces, minor-closed classes, various non-minor-closed classes, and graph classes with polynomial growth. We then explore how graph product structure might be applicable to more broadly defined graph classes. In particular, we characterise when a graph class defined by a cartesian or strong product has bounded or polynomial expansion. We then explore graph product structure theorems for various geometrically defined graph classes, and present several open problems.

Induced odd cycle packing number, independent sets, and chromatic number
The induced odd cycle packing number $iocp(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the maximum integer $k$ such that $G$ contains an induced subgraph consisting of $k$ pairwise vertex-disjoint odd cycles. Motivated by applications to geometric graphs, Bonamy et al.~\cite{indoc} proved that graphs of bounded induced odd cycle packing number, bounded VC dimension, and linear independence number admit a randomized EPTAS for the independence number. We show that the assumption of bounded VC dimension is not necessary, exhibiting a randomized algorithm that for any integers $k\ge 0$ and $t\ge 1$ and any $n$-vertex graph $G$ of induced odd cycle packing number at most $k$ returns in time $O_{k,t}(n^{k+4})$ an independent set of $G$ whose size is at least $α(G)-n/t$ with high probability. In addition, we present $χ$-boundedness results for graphs with bounded odd cycle packing number, and use them to design a QPTAS for the independence number only assuming bounded induced odd cycle packing number.

Sublinear separators in intersection graphs of convex shapes
We give a natural sufficient condition for an intersection graph of compact convex sets in R^d to have a balanced separator of sublinear size. This condition generalizes several previous results on sublinear separators in intersection graphs. Furthermore, the argument used to prove the existence of sublinear separators is based on a connection with generalized coloring numbers which has not been previously explored in geometric settings.

Coloring near-quadrangulations of the cylinder and the torus
Let G be a simple connected plane graph and let C_1 and C_2 be cycles in G bounding distinct faces f_1 and f_2. For a positive integer l, let r(l) denote the number of integers n such that -l<=n<=l, n is divisible by 3, and n has the same parity as l; in particular, r(4)=1. Let r_{f_1,f_2}(G) be the product of r(|f|) over all faces f of G distinct from f_1 and f_2, and let q(G)=1+sum_{f:|f|\neq 4} |f|, where the sum is over all faces f of G. We give an algorithm with time complexity O(r_{f_1,f_2}(G)q(G)|G|) which, given a 3-coloring psi of C_1 and C_2, either finds an extension of psi to a 3-coloring of G, or correctly decides no such extension exists. The algorithm is based on a min-max theorem for a variant of integer 2- commodity flows, and consequently in the negative case produces an obstruction to the existence of the extension. As a corollary, we show that every triangle-free graph drawn in the torus with edge-width at least 21 is 3-colorable.

Independence number in triangle-free graphs avoiding a minor
The celebrated Hadwiger's conjecture states that if a graph contains no $K_{t+1}$ minor then it is $t$-colourable. If true, it would in particular imply that every $n$-vertex $K_{t+1}$-minor-free graph has an independent set of size at least $n/t$. In 1982, Duchet and Meyniel proved that this bound holds within a factor $2$. Their bound has been improved; most notably in an absolute factor by Fox, which was later improved by Balogh and Kostochka. Here we consider the same question for triangle-free graphs. By the results of Shearer and Kostochka and Thomason, it follows that any triangle-free graph with no $K_t$ minor has an independent set of size $Ω(\tfrac{\sqrt{\log{t}}}{t}n)$. We show that a much larger independent set exists; for all sufficiently large $t$ every triangle-free graph on $n$ vertices with no $K_t$-minor has an independent set of size $ \tfrac{n}{t^{1-\varepsilon}}$. This answers a question of Sergey Norin.

On fractional fragility rates of graph classes
We consider, for every positive integer $a$, probability distributions on subsets of vertices of a graph with the property that every vertex belongs to the random set sampled from this distribution with probability at most $1/a$. Among other results, we prove that for every positive integer~$a$ and every planar graph $G$, there exists such a probability distribution with the additional property that deleting the random set creates a graph with component-size at most $(Δ(G)-1)^{a+O(\sqrt{a})}$, or a graph with treedepth at most $O(a^3\log_2(a))$. We also provide nearly-matching lower bounds.
