Deformations and second-order rigidity of polytopes
We study deformations of polytopes that preserve edge lengths and face coplanarities. This gives rise to a notion of rigidity, for which we develop a second-order theory together with an effective algorithm for testing second-order rigidity symbolically. The strength of these new tools is demonstrated on several polytope classes, including the previously intractable regular dodecahedron, which we find to be rigid. We also find that a single tested polytope evades our techniques and will therefore provide a simple test case for future developments of tools of even higher order. This paper also contains a study of so-called edge-length perturbations. We point out connections between rigidity and the ability to realize polytopes with slightly perturbed edge lengths. To explore these connections in practice, we dedicate a section to another case study of the regular dodecahedron. We investigate the local behavior of its realization space with a view towards edge-length perturbations, singularities and generic global rigidity.

Rigidity of Circle Packings with Flexible Radii
Published • View PublicationBIB
Circle packings are arrangement of circles satisfying specified tangency requirements. Many problems about packing of circles and spheres occur in nature particularly in material design and protein structure. Surprisingly, little is known about the stability and rigidity of circle packings. In this paper, we study the rigidity of circle packings representing a given planar graph. The radii of circles are flexible with equality and inequality constraints. We provide a dual condition for the packing to be rigid in the first order. This gives us a sufficient condition to show a packing is rigid. Then we will explore the difficulties on rigidity problems beyond the first order.

Explicit combinatorial design
A combinatorial design is a family of sets that are almost disjoint, which is applied in pseudo random number generations and randomness extractions. The parameter, $ρ$, quantifying the overlap between the sets within the family, is directly related to the length of a random seed needed and the efficiency of an extractor. Nisan and Wigderson proposed an explicit construction of designs in 1994. Later in 2003, Hartman and Raz proved a bound of $ρ\le e^2$ for the Nisan-Wigderson construction in a limited parameter regime. In this work, we prove a tighter bound of $ρ<e$ with the entire parameter range by slightly refining the Nisan-Wigderson construction. Following the block idea used by Raz, Reingold, and Vadhan, we present an explicit weak design with $ρ=1$.
