For finite subsets A_1,...,A_n of a field, their sumset is given by {a_1+...+a_n: a_1 in A_1,...,a_n in A_n}. In this paper we study various restricted sumsets of A_1,...,A_n with restrictions of the following forms: a_i-a_j not in S_{ij}, or alpha_ia_i not=alpha_ja_j, or a_i+b_i not=a_j+b_j (mod m_{ij}). Furthermore, we gain an insight into relations among recent results on this area obtained in quite different ways.

To determine Euler numbers modulo powers of two seems to be a difficult task. In this paper we achieve this and apply the explicit congruence to give a new proof of a classical result due to M. A. Stern.

Let A={a_s(mod n_s)}_{s=1}^k and B={b_t(mod m_t)}_{t=1}^l be two systems of residue classes. If |{1\le s\le k: x=a_s (mod n_s)}| and |{1\le t\le l: x=b_t (mod m_t)}| are equal for all integers x, then A and B are said to be covering equivalent. In this paper we characterize the covering equivalence in a simple and new way. Using the characterization we partially confirm a conjecture of R. L. Graham and K. O'Bryant.

Let {a_s(mod n_s)}_{s=1}^k (k>1) be a finite system of residue classes with the moduli n_1,...,n_k distinct. By means of algebraic integers we show that the range of the covering function w(x)=|{1\le s\le k: x=a_s (mod n_s)}| is not contained in any residue class with modulus greater one. In particular, the values of w(x) cannot have the same parity.
Identities concerning Bernoulli and Euler polynomials

We establish two general identities for Bernoulli and Euler polynomials, which are of a new type and have many consequences. The most striking result in this paper is as follows: If $n$ is a positive integer, $r+s+t=n$ and $x+y+z=1$, then we have $$rF(s,t;x,y)+sF(t,r;y,z)+tF(r,s;z,x)=0$$ where $$F(s,t;x,y):=\sum_{k=0}^n(-1)^k\binom{s}{k}\binom{t}{n-k}B_{n-k}(x)B_k(y).$$ This symmetric relation implies the curious identities of Miki and Matiyasevich as well as some new identities for Bernoulli polynomials such as $$\sum_{k=0}^n\binom{n}{k}^2B_k(x)B_{n-k}(x)=2\sum^n\Sb k=0 k\not=n-1\endSb\binom{n}{k}\binom{n+k-1}{k}B_k(x)B_{n-k}.$$

We derive several symmetric identities for Bernoulli and Euler polynomials which imply some known identities. Our proofs depend on the new technique developed in part I and some identities obtained in [European J. Combin. 24(2003), 709--718].

In this paper we obtain several new identities for Bernoulli and Euler polynomials; some of them extend Miki's and Matiyasevich's identities. Our new method involves differences and derivatives of polynomials.

In this paper we study recurrences concerning the combinatorial sum $[n,r]_m=\sum_{k\equiv r (mod m)}\binom {n}{k}$ and the alternate sum $\sum_{k\equiv r (mod m)}(-1)^{(k-r)/m}\binom{n}{k}$, where m>0, $n\ge 0$ and r are integers. For example, we show that if $n\ge m-1$ then $$\sum_{i=0}^{\lfloor(m-1)/2\rfloor}(-1)^i\binom{m-1-i}i [n-2i,r-i]_m=2^{n-m+1}.$$ We also apply such results to investigate Bernoulli and Euler polynomials. Our approach depends heavily on an identity established by the author [Integers 2(2002)].

Let $ψ_1,...,ψ_k$ be maps from Z to an additive abelian group with positive periods $n_1,...,n_k$ respectively. We show that the function $ψ=ψ_1+...+ψ_k$ is constant if $ψ(x)$ equals a constant for |S| consecutive integers x where S={r/n_s: r=0,...,n_s-1; s=1,...,k}; moreover, there are periodic maps $f_0,...,f_{|S|-1}$ from Z to Z only depending on S such that $ψ(x)=\sum_{r=0}^{|S|-1}f_r(x)ψ(r)$ for all integers x. This local-global theorem extends a previous result [Math. Res. Lett. 11(2004), 187--196], and has various applications.

Let A={a_s(mod n_s)}_{s=0}^k be a system of residue classes. With the help of cyclotomic fields we obtain a theorem which unifies several previously known results concerning system A. In particular, we show that if every integer lies in more than m=[sum_{s=1}^k 1/n_s] members of A, then for any a=0,1,2,... there are at least binom{m}{[a/n_0]} subsets I of {1,...,k} with sum_{s in I}1/n_s=a/n_0. We also characterize when any integer lies in at most m members of A, where m is a fixed positive integer.

Let $ψ_1,...,ψ_k$ be periodic maps from $\Bbb Z$ to a field of characteristic p (where p is zero or a prime). Assume that positive integers $n_1,...,n_k$ not divisible by p are their periods respectively. We show that $ψ_1+...+ψ_k$ is constant if $ψ_1(x)+...+ψ_k(x)$ equals a constant for |S| consecutive integers x where S={r/n_s: r=0,...,n_s-1; s=1,...,k}. We also present some new results on finite systems of arithmetic sequences.

For ρ=1 or -1, we determine $\prod_{0<c<d, (d/c)=ρ} binomial coeff.{p-1}{\lfloor pc/d\rfloor}$ modulo p^2 in terms of Lucas numbers, the fundamental unit and the class number of E, where (d/c) is the Kronecker symbol.

Zero-sum problems for abelian groups and covers of the integers by residue classes, are two different active topics initiated by P. Erdos more than 40 years ago and investigated by many researchers separately since then. In an earlier announcement [Electron. Res. Announc. Amer. Math. Soc. 9(2003), 51-60], the author claimed some surprising connections among these seemingly unrelated fascinating areas. In this paper we establish further connections between zero-sum problems for abelian p-groups and covers of the integers. For example, we extend the famous Erdos-Ginzburg-Ziv theorem in the following way: If {a_s(mod n_s)}_{s=1}^k covers each integer either exactly 2q-1 times or exactly 2q times where q is a prime power, then for any c_1,...,c_k in Z/qZ there exists a subset I of {1,...,k} such that sum_{s in I}1/n_s=q and sum_{s in I}c_s=0. Our main theorem in this paper unifies many results in the two realms and also implies an extension of the Alon-Friedland-Kalai result on regular subgraphs.
