Spiral Chains: The Proofs of Tait's and Tutte's Three-Edge-Coloring Conjectures
In this paper we have shown without assuming the four color theorem of planar graphs that every (bridgeless) cubic planar graph has a three-edge-coloring. This is an old-conjecture due to Tait in the squeal of efforts in settling the four-color conjecture at the end of the 19th century. We have also shown the applicability of our method to another well-known three edge-coloring conjecture on cubic graphs. Namely Tutte's conjecture that "every 2-connected cubic graph with no Petersen minor is 3-edge colorable". Hence the conclusion of this paper implies another non-computer proof of the four color theorem by using spiral-chains in different context.

The groups which can act semisymmetrically on a cubic graph of twice odd order are determined modulo a normal subgroup which acts semiregularly on the vertices of the graph.
Maximum Weight Independent Sets and Matchings in Sparse Random Graphs. Exact Results using the Local Weak Convergence Method
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G(n,c/n)$ and $G_r(n)$ be an $n$-node sparse random graph and a sparse random $r$-regular graph, respectively, and let ${\cal I}(n,r)$ and ${\cal I}(n,c)$ be the sizes of the largest independent set in $G(n,c/n)$ and $G_r(n)$. The asymptotic value of ${\cal I}(n,c)/n$ as $n\to\infty$, can be computed using the Karp-Sipser algorithm when $c\leq e$. For random cubic graphs, $r=3$, it is only known that $.432\leq\liminf_n {\cal I}(n,3)/n \leq \limsup_n {\cal I}(n,3)\leq .4591$ with high probability (w.h.p.) as $n\to\infty$, as shown by Frieze and Suen and by Bollobas, respectively. In this paper we assume in addition that the nodes of the graph are equipped with non-negative weights, independently generated according to some common distribution, and we consider instead the maximum weight of an independent set. Surprisingly, we discover that for certain weight distributions, the limit $\lim_n {\cal I}(n,c)/n$ can be computed exactly even when $c>e$, and $\lim_n {\cal I}(n,r)/n$ can be computed exactly for some $r\geq 2$. For example, when the weights are exponentially distributed with parameter 1, $\lim_n {\cal I}(n,2e)/n\approx .5517$, and $\lim_n {\cal I}(n,3)/n\approx .6077$. Our results are established using the recently developed local weak convergence method further reduced to a certain local optimality property exhibited by the models we consider.

Reformulating the Map Color Theorem
Published • View Publication • BIB
This paper discusses reformulations of the problem of coloring plane maps with four colors. The context is the edge-coloring with three colors of cubic graphs such that three distinct colors occur at each vertex. We include discussion of the Eliahou-Kryuchkov conjecture, the Penrose formula, the vector cross product formulation and the reformulations in terms of formations and factorizations due to G. Spencer-Brown. The latter includes a proof of the Spencer-Brown parity lemma and discussion of the parity-pass algorithm.

Hard Tiling Problems with Simple Tiles
Published • View Publication • BIB
It is well-known that the question of whether a given finite region can be tiled with a given set of tiles is NP-complete. We show that the same is true for the right tromino and square tetromino on the square lattice, or for the right tromino alone. In the process, we show that Monotone 1-in-3 Satisfiability is NP-complete for planar cubic graphs. In higher dimensions, we show NP-completeness for the domino and straight tromino for general regions on the cubic lattice, and for simply-connected regions on the four-dimensional hypercubic lattice.
