Asymptotic Growth of Associated Primes of Certain Graph Ideals
Published • View PublicationBIB
We specify a class of graphs, $H_t$, and characterize the irreducible decomposition of all powers of the cover ideals. This gives insight into the structure and stabilization of the corresponding associated primes; specifically, providing an answer to the question "For each integer $t\geq 0$, does there exist a (hyper) graph $H_t$ such that stabilization of associated primes occurs at $s\geq (χ(H_t)-1)+t$?" asked by Francisco, Hà, and Van Tuyl. For each $t$, $H_t$ has chromatic number 3 and associated primes that stabilize at $s=2+t$.

Higher order Fourier analysis as an algebraic theory I
Ergodic theory, Higher order Fourier analysis and the hyper graph regularity method are three possible approaches to Szemerédi type theorems in abelian groups. In this paper we develop an algebraic theory that creates a connection between these approaches. Our main method is to take the ultra product of abelian groups and to develop a precise algebraic theory of higher order characters on it. These results then can be turned back into approximative statements about finite Abelian groups.

A correspondence principle between (hyper)graph theory and probability theory, and the (hyper)graph removal lemma
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a correspondence principle (analogous to the Furstenberg correspondence principle) that allows one to extract an infinite random graph or hypergraph from a sequence of increasingly large deterministic graphs or hypergraphs. As an application we present a new (infinitary) proof of the hypergraph removal lemma of Nagle-Schacht-Rödl-Skokan and Gowers, which does not require the hypergraph regularity lemma and requires significantly less computation. This in turn gives new proofs of several corollaries of the hypergraph removal lemma, such as Szemerédi's theorem on arithmetic progressions.

Extremal problems for ordered (hyper)graphs: applications of Davenport-Schinzel sequences
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a containment relation of hypergraphs which respects linear orderings of vertices and investigate associated extremal functions. We extend, by means of a more generally applicable theorem, the n.log n upper bound on the ordered graph extremal function of F=({1,3}, {1,5}, {2,3}, {2,4}) due to Z. Furedi to the n.(log n)^2.(loglog n)^3 upper bound in the hypergraph case. We use Davenport-Schinzel sequences to derive almost linear upper bounds in terms of the inverse Ackermann function. We obtain such upper bounds for the extremal functions of forests consisting of stars whose all centers precede all leaves.

Generalized Kneser coloring theorems with combinatorial proofs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Kneser conjecture (1955) was proved by Lovász (1978) using the Borsuk-Ulam theorem; all subsequent proofs, extensions and generalizations also relied on Algebraic Topology results, namely the Borsuk-Ulam theorem and its extensions. Only in 2000, Matoušek provided the first combinatorial proof of the Kneser conjecture. Here we provide a hypergraph coloring theorem, with a combinatorial proof, which has as special cases the Kneser conjecture as well as its extensions and generalization by (hyper)graph coloring theorems of Dol'nikov, Alon-Frankl-Lovász, Sarkaria, and Kriz. We also give a combinatorial proof of Schrijver's theorem.
